A little hint for all those M50i/M50d drivers who want to change the discs and pads: You will need an E17 torx. That thing is RARE. Torque: 110 Nm. You're welcome.

The video you did on the 50i was the most detail oriented review on the features of the X5 50i on UA-cam period and its what Inspired me to purchase my X5 50i, so I just what to say thanks and keep up the great work.
I'm so glad i found your youtube video. i'm happy about the right size of tools to remove the brake pad and caliper on my 2011 BMW X5 xdrive 50i I thank you so much my brtother. i really really do appreciate you.
You're the man Edward! Thanks for uploading these excellent videos! I have a x5 f15 n63TU and will attempt an oil/brake pad change this weekend. Just ordered my parts. I also just subscribed to your channel! Keep em coming bud!
Place the brake *anti rattle clip* so that the spring feet rest on the forward side of the caliper bracket, then push/slide the anti rattle clip towards the rear of the vehicle until the smaller *inner clips* slide and hook into the holes of the brake caliper. (Once the rattle clip is placed properly, it's a smooth movement to the rear which sets it in place)
Nice job and thanks for the content! Just getting ready to do this on my (new to me) 2016 xdrive50i and was looking for a good DIY. I went with the Power Stop Z23 carbon ceramics which seem to get rave reviews. Also trying the G2 caliper paint so we'll see how that goes.
kind of guy you would sit down with a beer, just a gentleman. Now if you plan on keeping your vehicle and change out brakes again, put a little grease on those hubs, next time you won't have to beat them off with a hammer.
The rear brake pads do not need to be electronically disengaged. You can follow the same steps for the front. The electronic parking brake is a separate brake system (drum type)
@@eddiemcars I see. I’m having a hell of a time trying to remove the rear driver rotor and thought it had something to do with the emergency electronic brakes bring engaged. I can’t see to get off. I’ve banged on it with a hammer and a rubber mallet. Nothing. Any suggestions? ‘14 35i.
@@RobertHa81 I never changed the rear rotors. But I would double check and make sure the car is chocked, look inside and make sure the parking brake isn’t engaged. There shouldn’t be anything squeezing on the inside of the rotor. FWIW, I did have a tough time removing the front rotor too. I had to give it a baseball like swing with a hammer to get it to come off. If using a rubber mallet, hit it as hard as you can.
Hello, I followed your steps and replaced the front brake myself. After the replacement, I drove around the city for about 15 minutes. Stopped and watched the brake disc, the running-in is not good, the inner ring of the brake disc is about 1-1.5cm, there is no ink mark, it is still new. Other places have run-in to. It doesn't feel good to run in left and right. But the rear wheel broke in just fine. I don't know if it's because I didn't install it well in front of me. I'll check again tomorrow at high speed. If it's still the case, should I reinstall the front brake pads again? thanks
When changing the front brakes If my brakes are worn and the red brake light is on , on the dash. Can i just replace the brakes or does the sensor have to be replaced too?
You don’t NEED to. I’ve gotten by with removing with needle nose pliers, carefully without breaking it and inserting it into the new pads. I always think it’s a good idea to have one on standby in case you break it when removing it.
I would use Zimmerman or Fremax for rotors. As far as the pads go. Textar is OEM but I really like Akebono for less dust and it still keeps the initial bite.
I will tell you, the first time trying to get the rotor off took some work. I was tapping it with a hammer and after 45 min I was going to give up, it was 11pm at night. I borrowed some help, let’s just say it took one good whack and that rotor fell right off.
If you can remove the sensor from the old pad without breaking it, it can reused. If you break it and expose the wire. It will trigger the light inside the dashboard.
Thanks for posting this, I have watched your video on spark plug change and about to do the brake job on my 2016 x6 50i after watching this. Bts, do you need to do the brake bedding process after this job? Thanks.
You want to spray both sides of the rotor surfaces to remove the oils and wipe away with a terry cloth. If you don’t, you’ll get reduced braking power and constant noise.
The process for rear brakes exactly is the same as the front. However, if you’re changing the rear rotors, you will have to retract the e parking brake.
Good content....do yourself a favor and cut that dang brake sensor wire about an inch from the brake pad, twist the ends together, shrink wrap/electrical tape it and zip tie it outta the way and call it a day....
What do you do about the sensor on the dash that says Brake and every time you start the car it says to drive carefully, how do you get rid of the error, is it bc you tied the wires together the light goes away on the dash? thanks

The 50i does need a larger socket than the 35i and I can’t recall which one since the car is gone.
Hi! Thank you for your video. For the rear brakes, should the emergency electronic brakes be engaged or disengaged? Does it matter?
The rear brake pads do not need to be electronically disengaged. You can follow the same steps for the front. The electronic parking brake is a separate brake system (drum type)
