1989 Talk Show: What Makes A Person Gay? (Includes Exorcist Joanne Highley)

- 4/12/1989. Panel includes gay brothers Dick and Philip Dufour, Veneita Porter, Aaron Kirby, Dr. Richard Green (The Sissy Boy Syndrome) & "ex-lesbian" Joanne Highley.
How many teenage boys committed suicide because of these people's hatred toward them & there was no support from anyone in society?
I thought about it ( suicide ), but never did it. You're right. These bee atches sending bad messages and making us feel bad...even today
My brother is an alcoholic. I love my brother, but I hate alcohol and alcohol abuse. Disagreeing with the actions of another person is not hatred. This is a fallen world, which is full of fallen people. We need to acknowledge that fact. You cannot solve a problem until you admit that the problem exists. You choose to be redeemed to God or you choose continue to exist in a fallen state. The choice is yours. Sexuality means nothing in the grander scope of things.
@@stuvo1977he’s not talking about disagreeing with homosexuality because of it being a sin. He’s talking about “bullies” people who literally try to make someone’s life a living hell. There’s a lot of young people who commit suicide because of the extreme bullying. No one deserves that.
I was in that position but I survived.... thanks to 10 years of therapy.
Too many😿
Phil Donahue's show was so ground breaking.

Dick Dufour's name appears on the AIDS quilt (I believe he is the same man who appears here alongside his brother). He passed away on November 3rd 1989, exactly 7 months after this was broadcast. May he rest in peace and serve as a reminder of the devastating effects this epidemic had - and still continues to have - on our community throughout the United States and the world.
We think the same. I also checked the AIDS quilt and noticed that he passed away so soon after the show aired. He mentioned an eye condition he had but he did not appear to look sickly. So sad.
Yes, Philip Dufour went to Washington and was actively involved in politics, becoming the LGBT liaison to Vice President Al Gore in the 1990s. He's still a strong advocate for equal rights to this day.
I love hearing that he is still alive!

I don’t know how I got down this UA-cam rabbit hole, but Donahue rewatches quite well in 2022. I got a little sad when Dick started talking about his diseases and the prescriptions he is on. Then I got the chills and almost cried.
AND HE PASSED AWAY FROM AIDS IM 1989.
Cannot believe how ignorant people were on this episode! This audience is horrible and homophobic.. and no one knew what transgender was apparently..
"Ex-lesbian" ? I feel very sorry for her & her husband if the only reason that she chose to be married with a man is because of religion.
+Bri Lynnx A relationship with God is not a religion.
God & religion go hand in hand. We have religion to group with other people who worship the same god, it's not like the two aren't related.
Unrelated. Worth knowing :-)
Okay
i think there has to be a new way to think about this topic and God. Probably God permitted some to be born different for a reason or reasons, ever since adam and eve ate from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. whatever that reason is, man still hasnt discovered it. but in the last day judgment, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and God the Father will have to explain all their commandments and his ways of how he dealt with the world.
This really angers me...my parents were always present, no divorce...I had a happy childhood. At puberty, I realized that I was ONLY attracted to males...not the slightest in females. I did NOT CHOOSE this. Its who I am. My environment had nothing to do with it. I have many gay uncles and cousins.
exactly the same with me. My life was picture perfect. I love my parents and all of my family. We all went to church and everything haha but yeah Im still gay. I think its just genetic...
Steve Gorrell / Must be a genetic mutation.....
Steverino well your environment technically does
@Chris Johnson Why do gay people choose to reveal that to people you know will be upset and/or hurt? I would do nothing to hurt my parents, or anyone I love, and tell them about my sex life and who I sleep with. That is private to me. If I have an "open marriage" or into polygamy, that is my business and I would not be out to hurt anyone I love.
I’m so sorry you have to deal with this crap. I wish you all the best in the world. You deserve it.
thank you for posting.... love the old talk shows... sad they are no longer on!!
I grew up with this attitude through the 90's in England. I think it's great how accepting a lot of society is now, but most kids these days have no idea how hard growing up used to be with these attitudes. I can't even begin to understand what itt was like earlier than that.
Dr. Richard Green claims to be an objective scientist. Then why did he use such a pejorative term "sissy boy" for his subjects?
Roedy Green because boys who act like girls are typically called sissies. He's not calling them sissies. He explains in the beginning
@@sebasdarius But his position that all gay men were effeminate boys who wanted to be girls is patently wrong.
He explained it.
@@sebasdarius Also, we need to look at the video in the context of the time, it will not fly today, but for that time, I think this show was very progressive.
Roedy Green NOTHING about this “scientist” is scientific... he picked who he study (bias) he already knew what he wanted to prove (bias) the whole thing is just ridiculous and should be totally disregarded
Personally, I always believed that being LGBT is just a natural thing. No one chooses to be that way. After all, sexual orientation and gender identity are a fact of life just as much as being heterosexual a fact of life.

I feel for Joanne, poor miserable woman living all those years suppressing her true sexuality just because she thinks an imaginary god is going to judge her. Funny that she got applause for her statement here. Today, she'd get laughed off the stage.
I had two boys as a single mother, both were allowed to have Barbies, their best friends were usually girls for a long time, they had dolls, wore pink when they wanted to, bought and played with make-up, grew their hair long, and neither is Gay. Both are married and one is a dad, a wonderful Dad.
What they were missing in this old clip is that sexuality is in the BRAIN. Your genitals don't make you who you are. That is why in the 1950s, when kids were born with both sets of genitals, the parents and the doctors chose one, they often chose WRONG and got rid of the wrong parts. Genitals don't determine sexuality or which gender your brain is. People can be born with the wrong body. Just like they can be born with four legs, or an extra finger or all kinds of things, so let them figure out who they are. Thing is, they KNOW who they are from the time they can show and verbalize it.
Meanwhile in Uganda the LGBT perspective is yet to take root
ua-cam.com/video/79FhEhWGXjw/v-deo.html
Also, gender and sexuality are different.
Your genitals literally are a part of who you are.
My Baptist parents couldn't say the word "gay."
They usually evaded the topic but if it was unavoidable they'd say "THAT way" instead.
The world was more widespread when I was young: no internet, no cell phones, no cable TV. To say gays "choose" or "learn" to be gay from their environment seems outlandish to me. What environment do Christians imagine gays were exposed to, growing up in myriad communities around the world where no one even knows a gay person?
I know the environment most gays grew up in: Bible-believing, church-attending, loving homes headed by a mom and dad who sent their kids to Christian schools and colleges.
My mother (born in 1930) refered to gay people as "swishy"..but I also have to say she always told us that we should "live and let live" and she never made judgements on homosexuals..mom taught us that "the Lord loves everyone kids"..not bad ideology for a 1950's housewife, I'm sorta proud of the way she was so opened minded considering the times back then...Thanks mom for being kind and teaching your children not to hate....
Its great to see how far we've come. Alas, the damage has been done and those of us with PTSD still carry a lot of emotional baggage.
I love Phil Donahue and how he would do shows on lgbt issues, race issues, and other topics that were seen as controversial back in the 80's and 90's. We've come a long way since '89 but we have a ways to go. RIP Dick Dufour 🙏❤
The good ole "sex is for procreation" argument blah blah. If that's the case, then let's ban condoms and criminalize all forms birth control, oral sex, anal sex, and mutual masturbation- even for married couples. After all, folks shouldn't fulfill their sexual desires with one another UNLESS they're making babies.
Also what about those who are sterile. Maybe they could never have children.
“The Sissy Boy Syndrome”-Geez. What a horrible title! Would not be titled that nowadays. 😮
Why would someone choose such a difficult way to live? No one would choose to be called names, discriminated against and even killed for being gay. To believe that gay people should suppress their real feelings and live a life of lies is just wrong. Live and let live.
“It’s not so much about if it’s inborn or learned, but why we are asking the question.” Utterly spot-on. At the end of the day, bigotry doesn’t care about the nature vs. nurture; it will find a way thrive under either umbrella.
I don't know why there are so many thumbs down on this video. I'm 35 mins in and everything is very civil. There is no shouting or anything like that as you see on some shows.
InuitInua It may have to do with the crazy lady. That's how it seems to work. A lot of people don't stop and think that I posted the video for history reasons. The "ex-gay" nut job makes them give the video a thumbs down. That's ok. I get it.
Thus, the reason for the thumbs down, Inuitlnua.
Great credit due to the iconic Phil Donahue (1935-2024) for being such a groundbreaker for Gay and lesbian issues----even in the 70s when it was still a taboo subject in most places. Happily, he lived to see tremendous progress for the Gay community, including legal Gay marriage in 2015. Rest in Peace.
16:00 I’d like to know where this “ex-lesbian” is today..? Thank god we’re still moving towards a secular society. Religion has caused more problems and wars than any other subject.
Donahue was good at his questions for the time. He is asking the way any other day person would ask who may be too afraid to ask because they dont know how to ask. Donahue has always been great to the LGBTQ community to bring people on his show so the country could "meet" people who may not be like them. I hope it helped many people learn and be tolerant and more loving.
I can't believe how far we've come in the last 27 years, but there's still work to be done!
It actually seems worse today because now people can go online and say exactly what they feel anonymously. Things they would probably never say to someones face.

I’m a straight ally and seeing this is so disturbing to me. I have gay friends that I love unconditionally and I will forever defend in this fucked up world. I do not believe that being gay is a product of your environment. I truly 100% believe that one is born gay just like one is born straight. You cannot ever help the laws of attraction, we are who we are.
I’m thankful for these shows to show me that society isn’t as bad as it was but I know we, as humans, have so much more work to do so everyone can live true to themselves judgement free. Love, respect and support can and will make this world a better place.
At least people could discuss things in those days. Its more oppressive today in a lot of ways. Everyone is walking on eggshells and risks getting cancelled or losing their job over a joke or different opinion.
Now the LGBT activists have become the religious extremists, and being a straight male is demonized.

This effing episode made my dad step mom and step grandmother think my brother was gay. He had a high laugh as a kid, and I guess he didn't play lots of sports like guys do. He's not old ..he'll be 40 in March.
I'm the same age as your brother. Lol
It’s the stereotype that poisons people too, yes there are signs that indicate a guy is gay or bi but let’s say if you hear a guy singing a girl song you can’t just assume he’s gay let’s say if the song is on the radio and a guy ends up singing the chorus, songs are very catchy we automatically sing the chorus cus it got to us we are only human so it’s unfair to call a guy gay for that, or a guy is single that doesn’t mean he’s gay he is single we all know single means no companion if you’re single how are you gay that doesn’t make any sense
What are you thinking?
He should have trolled them by letting them think he was gay 😂😂
I can only imagine what it's like to struggle with sexuality and the adversity that comes with it amongst family, friends and society in general. I am one of 8 siblings and only 2 are straight. I have other lgbtq friends and family members and the only times there have been issues is when straight Christians object to it. Even they have come to accept how things are over time and everyone gets on fine. I feel very fortunate

Donahue already had a gay athelete on in the 70s
I think homosexuality is chemical. I grew up with a gay classmate he loved playing with dolls and hanging out with the girls. Both his sister's were very athletic and tomboys. All three are gay today. He is now a well known fashion designer in Boston and a drag queen. All three are happily married and had a happy growing up. I also have seen that a domineering mother has helped it too in males.
I agree as well.
I’m gay and I never liked hanging out with women and never wanted to play with dolls. I’m masculine Stop the stereotypes. And no, I didn’t have a domineering mother
It shows how far we have come and how far we have yet to go. Many of these attitudes still exist. Thankfully, they no longer prevail.

When talk shows were intellegent..
I'm left with also being reminded what a GREAT interviewer / host Donahue is/ was. He masterfully MANAGES the show so well, and there's no majority of the show given to watching two women pull the other's hair out as entertainment. We are TRULY a DUMBED-DOWN culture, and it's ONLY going to now get worse, when the Jerry Springer contestant is NOW the host, ala Trump. The inmates have taken over the asylum,, ist's gonna be a fun show for four years, but i'd rather be watching the show from the safe distance of an audience member than on stage with the two sociopaths running the show.
Men, don’t wear a hairpiece. It is always obvious. When I see people wearing a hairpiece I think they lack confidence and honesty.
The problem might be with your thinking?
Let people wear what they wish, it's not our business.
No coincidence that the only person on the panel (and in the studio, apparently) talking complete nonsense on this issue was the “ex-lesbian” who is now a fundamentalist Christian. Anyway, interesting discussion - thanks for retrieving it from the way-back machine.

@@thebitchisback8910 you know your own business (and he knows his) but the typical experience and observation of others suggests it’s very likely he’s also gay but gets to feel superior to you by hating “your sin”. Living in the closet (deliberately choosing to either stay in the closet after becoming aware one is in it or going into it for the acceptance of those who object that one is not) is the manufacturing of a false self consistent with covert narcissism (and narcissists do live vicariously as well as thrive on the disappointments/pain of others and resent their happiness/success- but they don’t have an internal stable core self identity so what they perceive as another’s well-being is a composite of the standard claimed by others around them). I’ll be the first to admit I don’t know what I’m talking about with respect to you or your family just please for your own sake watch your back especially with regard to shared resources/property/inheritance.
I was 46 when I got the surprise of my life and I’m not nearly as alone as I would have thought from such a thing I’d have considered unheard-of. I mean I should’ve known because the signs were there from the time I was outed at 15 and my father cried in bed for three days and never treated me the same. He didn’t cry because I told him it was true, he cried because I didn’t lie to him when he asked me. He would’ve loved a secret like that to drag me around by, but I didn’t realize any of that at the time despite that big 3-D color sign.
If I had been in your position hearing me say this I absolutely would’ve told you “you don’t know what you’re talking about my brother is not showing me any sign”.... so I don’t expect you to react any differently but it would have been a benefit to me to have this information to keep in mind and hopefully it will be to you as well. You’ve been authentic and true to yourself this far so don’t drop the ball now and go down the road of snooping or spying on him or any such bullshit because what you have to realize is he believes his fake self is his authentic self he’s likeliest not gonna be hooking up on the downlow as the whole thing i’m talking about originates in his mind.

+atheistexchristian I noticed that as well which is very interesting as he seemed to be describing the very definition of transgender.
Except a lot of them didn't grow up as 'sissy boys.' Look at Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner.
@@littlecasino60
What? Bruce Jenner was feminine...so he was in sports ..what? Like jogging? In his wife's panties you realize right?!?😂😂😂
Yes that’s exactly what he was describing. 😐 I think there’s strong indication of who is born and who has acquired a compensatory maladaptation at the expense of a developmental halt in the largely differing average experiences of transsexuals and gays. I didn’t begin realizing I definitely was gay and trying to pray it away until I was about 12 years old and from what I’ve heard and observed the onset of puberty is when all people first become aware of our own sexuality in a real and practical way. I do remember when I was 5 or younger (because of where we lived) wondering why I liked checking out the teenage boy across the street and realizing I better not ask though and should just wonder instead.
Transsexuals most frequently becoming aware of feeling their plumbing doesn’t match their gender much younger I believe are acting out the evidence of traumatic neglect or even abuse of which they’ve blocked memories. Parents like theirs (also like mine) don’t consider their own behavior may be causative or problematic of anything because they see anything they can point out in the child as a problem the CHILD IS CAUSING for them… So if there are surgeons who don’t know any better willing to make a buck giving patients what they present wanting rather than risking losing patients by counseling them to consider transgenderism is a chromosomal impossibility except in cases of extreme hermaphroditism (the exception whose rarity proves the rule) and that detransitioning wouldn’t exist if everybody was happy after having their junk filleted and incinerated with the surgical biohazard waste before agreeing to unconscionably mutilate them THEN OF COURSE PARENTS WITH NO CONSCIENCE SEE “FIXING” THE CHILD AS THE RESOLUTION.
Gender is one of the first things we learn about ourselves so this indicates very early trauma and if there’s anything I know about uncertainty it’s that when that’s all we have there’s nothing we want more than certainty, and the disordered (gender identity disorder being acquired in the same developmental era as other personality/identity disorders) among us dissociate to the degree of manufacturing their own delusion of certainty or false identity.
The guest who pointed out that natural selection would have selected against homosexuality used a logical fallacy to prove a valid point. It’s epigenetically selected for in utero (by a stress hormone mediated immune response) but at the time that was not part of science’s understanding of genetics. Either way we don’t reproduce direct carbon copies of ourselves, otherwise our children would be our twins (or hybrids I guess with their other parent). What this means is that all embryos have the potential to be born gay. The average is every fourth male to inhabit any particular maternal uterus, and this includes miscarriages the vast majority of which amazingly do go unnoticed believe it or not. I think it’s fucked up as hell that there’s no data on girls (and twins/multiples) if for no other reason than it would be useful to confirm the mechanism and verify or explain deviations from the every fourth male pattern. I don’t think there’s any reason to expect it would be different even if there is a hormonally different mechanism for selection because we can already see that the outcome isn’t different but it should be studied to confirm it’s arrived at via the same route.
@@littlecasino60 identity/personality disorder. Clearly the golden child of a narcissistic family of origin. As such he would most likely develop either narcissistic personality disorder or complex post traumatic stress disorder, but other personality/identity disorders are not out of the running (so to speak). So Bruce (having no therapeutic intervention before or during adolescence to acknowledge and resolve the traumatic abuse or neglect his early crossdressing acted out the evidence of) plays dress-up with his genitals too now because recognition of his own gender was the developmental stage at which he was traumatized into manufacturing a defensive alternate persona.
It’s definitely not environmental.

It's not a stretch to believe that men who act effeminate have some chemical/chromosomal difference that makes them gay. I do not recall ever "choosing" to be straight. The chemical makeup of the brain controls everything. People get in serious accidents and become violent, their personality changes, etc - Add a chemical like alcohol and it changes your perception - people you are not usually attracted to become attractive - not meant to be funny or make fun, but, for some, fat women become attractive. With all the intricacies of the brain, it is completely possible that an abnormality of the production of certain chemicals or a chromosome abnormality determine your sexual preference. Regardless of the cause, it still isn't a choice and people shouldn't be hated, shunned, etc. because of it.
Also, when I say abnormality, I do not mean it's a mental illness, or there is something wrong with these people in that sense, I simply mean that it is a condition that doesn't happen as frequently as the alternative. People with blue green eyes don't happen as often, but it doesn't mean they're defective, lol.
Ok that’s you others have a different experience so what? You’re really over pushing some of those things too
Is anyone else disturbed by the fact that parents allowed someone to study their childs SEXUALITY at the age of 4?!?!?

Its not ignorance they were more okay with then then in 1982.
The only ignorance I saw in this is by the Christian "ex lesbian". Still the same.
@@Jwdude123 if you believe it is god's wrath why are you even watching the video
...and what we've endured.
Joanne Highley, what an horrendous woman!
Marlom Ruivvo She's not fine with it. She's still going on about it to this day. Any way the law is now on our side. Deal with it.
Marlom Ruivvo Who threw anything in your face? Get a grip, dear.
I was waiting for that bitch to bring up the whole God thing. She’s a pig.
So you don't think Highley of her I take it...
interesting they kept showing shots of her husband but we never heard from him.
The ex-lesbian is truly a lost soul. She believes she has to look to outside sources (God/religion) to know who she should be. So sad.
Do you mind if I ask where you get these old episodes of the Donahue Show? I’m trying to look for an episode that aired in 1989. It’s called “wilding” episode it talks about the rape in glen ridge . I’m trying to use a snippet for research
Watching this in 2022 makes me realize how far gay men and lesbians have come.
this is gold!!
Venetia porter is the voice of reason on this panel. also interesting: idk many gay males who wish they were female. some yes but the sissy research seems to confuse sexual identity with gender identity.
I agree!
The shrink didn't know a thing about women and girls. He denied Venetia's lived experience, because he is the white male Doctor and can never be wrong.
The ex lesbian was quite ignorant :homosexuality exists in nature
She is disturbed.
26:40 Wow my first gay friend took Foscarnet for CMV before he died. He had a port/shunt and I V trolley for that medication. He was one of the first gay people I met knowingly and openly as a gay person myself (as soon as I was old enough to drive lol). He worked where I got my hair cut. I was maybe 19, 20 at most when he died in 1989 or 90. The same guest talked about that being an experimental Swedish drug trial in Houston. Houston’s where I grew up and where I remember wearing a space suit to visit Paul at Park Plaza hospital during the Christmas holidays my senior year of high school 1987. To P Dufour: Sincere condolences for the loss of your brother.
Joanne Highley said that homosexuality causes problems in our society. What problems is she talking about? She can't just say that there are problems and not say what they are. This is part of the problem with the religious right who downplays and ridicules homosexuality. And I would also contend that people don't choose who or what they're attracted to, it just comes naturally.
I can't believe how narrow minded ppl used to be! I love my gay friends! I think it's genetic and there's hormonal changes that cause the dynamic of the brain to be different....theres nothing wrong w being who they are
Marie Tanner and I also think karma when it comes down to hating gender , race also interferes . You parent could be homophobic and the child could come out gay to serve as a karmatic debt
Just because someone has a differing opinion doesn't make them narrowed minded. The woman that is an ex-Lesbian is just speaking her truth and that is as valid as the people who are gay and are happy with their lifestyle.
@@donnaleeclubb119 It's about THE truth.
RIP to Mr Dufour. The early aids epidemic took a generation of beautiful people and its heart wrenching. He actually looks like he’s tired on this episode.
This is amazing stuff. This debates are golden. Please got them with your life.
I wonder if Caitlin Jenner saw this in ‘89.
I e never watched this guy’s show growing up, but I wish I did instead of watching Montel and Ricki Lake. He’s good. Damn good. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
It’s so interesting to watch these older talk shows. To me, it shows not only the mind set of people from back then but also the growth we’ve had in modern times.
Check out the wig at 3:10.
honestly i just feel bad for joanne. she must be filled with so much self hatred
Yep. Another victim of the corrosive effects of religions. 'Faith' doesn't like, or at least doesn't require, facts and evidence. Joanne's worldview seems to operate through her feelings alone; filtered through her Denomination. Whatever that was...
Im gay..... and omg this was interesting af!
Yup we've come a long way since then 🤔.........sad at this day and age we still have a ways to go.
Same and agree!
@@josephadiaz8343So true
I'm 56 and straight.
Joanne was an interesting character! My impression is that she was a victim of the corrosive effects of religions. 'Faith' doesn't like, or at least doesn't require, facts and evidence. Joanne's worldview seems to operate through her feelings alone; filtered through her Denomination. Whatever that was.
It makes me sad to think she missed out on so many opportunities for genuine happiness.
Lol 2021 this show wouldn’t have a chance ... I love it
I am 81. back in the day, gay men married to disgust their homosexuality….they did have secret gay lovers…..
my sister dated a girl when she was younger. i asked her if she was lesbian. and she replied no. i asked her if she had sexual relation and she said, yes, so i said then your a lesbian. she said no. i only have love for this woman
Damn they flippin out over folks being gay/lesbian. Imagine a whole transwoman or transman on the stage at that time? They really would’ve lost it. Glad America has progressed since then. Even if it’s not perfect
