Reviewing the Aron Quartett's recording of Korngold's string quartets for Fanfare Magazine, James A. Altena writes that "[the Op. 26 string quartet] is a microcosm of melodic and harmonic devices that Korngold would employ so brilliantly in years to come as a composer of film scores. Given Hitler’s recent assumption of power in neighboring Germany, the first, second, and fourth movements would almost seem to be a perverse denial of reality. The opening Allegro epitomizes the skittish music of the Hollywood light romance; the Scherzo is all charming, gently smiling bustle; the Finale is, improbably, a witty, chatty waltz, but one of a decidedly un-Straussian character. All the more surprising, then, is the third-movement Larghetto, beginning with open harmonics like an icy chill (almost hinting at the Second Viennese School), eventually succeeded by a melody of melancholic yearning that seeks to cling to a wistfully remembered but unrecoverable comfort and security."

Beautiful. The amount of mud slung at this composer's music during his lifetime and in the decades that followed his death is amazing and disconcerting. But Korngold is now enjoying the popularity he rightfully derserves. Thank you, mæstro. Thank you, members of the Doric String Quartet. And thank you, Sebastian Wang, for uploading this. Your combined efforts make the world a brighter place.

Mr. Korngold wrote so much wonderful music that is not commonly heard. Thanks for posting this with the the score. Based on his music and especially his lighthearted last movements, I bet he had a wonderful sense of humor.

Excellent post. Great to see the score to this underrated quartet. Very difficult to give a convincing performance.

Emotionally, I find Korngold's music to be like Bloch's: Very astringent at the same time being very sweet. Did Korngold live in the USA during the Depression? Bloch finally found a home on the Oregon Coast in 1939. I wonder if they ever met?? Both endured the Holocaust from a distance. I particularly like the notes by Wang!

The harmonies he uses are so interesting. Beautiful music either way. Also some of the textures and harmonies even remind me a little bit of Debussy. 4:09 I feel is a good example of this.
Edit: I also can see a bit of inspiration from Richard Strauss considering how chromatic things get, especially in the second movement.
