I swear this is one of the most underrated bands, and Paul Leary, is one of the most underrated Guitar Players!!! He and the band, are easily in a league of their own. And it deserves to be recognized in the History of Rock Music. Long live the Butthole Surfers!!! #BrownReasonToLive
Paul Leary is also an iconic music producer. As far as mass awareness goes, he'll likely be known to many, first and foremost, as the producer of Sublime's self titled album.
By the end of 1987, I had seen these lunatics eight times. As good as they are in this video, they were so much better in the mid-‘80s. They really should never be seen in the daylight.
Yeah, they were never the same after Locust Abortion Technician. As you say, they were at their best in the mid-80s. I actually slept through this set in my tent after overdoing it earlier in the day, but I'd already seen them many, many times, in proper venues.
I saw these fools live (my first concert, I was 14) at Castaic Lake in SoCal back in '93. Gibby's crazy ass was throwing beachballs out over the crowd and shooting them out of the air with a sawed-off shotgun. Man, did that show blow my young mind . . . I was never the same again.
Not only that but that's the same night Gibby got his tooth chipped cause some assholes were throwing beer bottles at both them and Stone Temple Pilots.

So weird seeing them play during the day. I caught this tour in Berkley on July 4th, 1993 on some really good lsd....Gibby was lighting a cymbal (and his hand) on fire and bashing it to make huge bursts of flames that you could feel in the front of the pit. Also had a shotgun...but it wasn't as loud as some of the fireworks smuggled in going off throughout and after the show was over. Just a completely chaotic, psychedelic spectacle up there in my top ten shows off all time with Pink Floyd...yep.
He was doing that in New Orleans and the security tackled him in the middle of the song! Last time I was there, there were still suit on the ceiling! Just another way they left their mark!
amazing story how this footage was almost lost but fate decided otherwise. that just tells you the world is supposed to see this snapshot in time of an amazing performance by a one of kind band.
Only the most experienced should ever drop acid at a Butthole Surfers show, three times for me. That time in Oakland though maybe shouldn't have mixed it with X!
Man, it´s so cool you took all this effort to post this video ! Butthole Surfers were a blast on stage around that time.Saw em in San Antonio TX in 92 ! Great memory, although each and everyone was completely wacked out ! Thanks for uploading this badass stuff !
Glad you enjoyed this. I often wonder if I am wasting my time with these uploads, then someone like you makes a great comment and I realise, I should keep uploading rare video.
As far as a Rock N' Roll guitar player- Paul Leary is IT. His style, playability and skill is the top of his game. I felt the same way when I saw Robin Finck play live with Nine Inch Nails.
Probably the routing was backwards, with the ins/outs reversed,or his feed cable was inserted halfway hastily during setup between a tight lineup etc. (It happens. It’s live music with lots of audio channels that have to be swapped quickly between acts) Or the Foh didn’t have him routed, though that seems doubtful,as it seems more of an issue directly at his rack, considering the tech had to run up,and seemingly re-route cabling. Could of even been a shitty cable-(most likely)
Sounds WAAAAY better than "The Only Thing Green",,,....a butt leg of this performance that I used to own. Its nice to finally hear a decent recording of what was more than likely one of the buddies biggest shows... before the fall......
I can't even believe how good they seem live; it's like nothing I've ever witnessed before actually seeing bands live opposed to on UA-cam. Could be THE most underrated band, maybe, ever.
I saw them on this tour in a big open field outside of Tulsa OK......amazing show. And believe it or not....their two opening bands were Flaming Lips and Stone Temple Pilots.
@@ScottishTeeVee Hell of a festival, both reading '93 and '94. I spotted Maynard from Tool in your video watching from backstage (back in the days when they were band one, day one; how times have changed! :D). Great job on the sound!

Thanks! I like the latter tone. Sounds about right, those things are so inconsistent, you could have a dozen and they would all sound different, on different days.
That's sort of how I remember a Butthole Surfers gig. I always saw them in London in sweaty, sleazy night club type places that were just a riot of weirdness. The best time I ever saw them was when they had huge screens projecting all sorts of shit backwards. Shoals of fish on a tropical reef swimming backwards , a sex change operation backwards and how a beef burger .....started out as a cow. No really - I didn't imagine it!
Nice one. I was there somewhere down the front. Thanks for capturing this, especially as the moshpit was pretty mental. I seem to remember at the very start Gibby came out, slagged off Therapy and probably all the other bands and then put his shoe on his head.
I was there too. I remember being really impressed how Gibby could pan his vocals from side to side of the PA. I've still got the festival program somewhere. Good old times.
I remember Gibby wearing a shoe on his head. I think it had 666 written on it but not 100% sure if that's right. It was my 1st Reading Festival and this was the band I was most looking forward to seeing.

Paul Leary is one of kind. He didn't break the mold, he shut down the foundry!
Couldn’t agree more man. Fucking blew my mind apart just in time.
I love this band. I love this time in music.
Your right! I forgot how much I loved him when I was first playing guitar!
It’s like tripping on acid while trying to save the airplane from crashing!
underrated is a MOST OVERSTATED thing about bands.
butthole surfers 🏄♀️ are huge

a real band can level any whack aesthetic
have seen bands destroy wine bars that had zero vibe & well lit

@@Spectrescup They got even better at Hairway to Steven after locust abortion technician tbh
@shuddufukkhup yeah, well, the band disagree with you for a start.
Yep, I saw them in 1987, and they almost burned the club down!

What a first concert
@@rokky6931 A real life changer, no doubt.
I remember him shooting balls over the crowd in Minnesota that year. Thanks for confirming my memory - WTF LOL...

I was there 19 years old and on mushrooms. Thanks for the upload.

Raging. The Butthole Surfers never failed to deliver. Also thanks Mr. Haynes for the tutorial on how to introduce yourself and the band.

Paul leary is a god.i only saw the b.h.surfers once.in pittsburgh with the flaming lips.i bowed to paul .it was epic
I saw the Butthole Surfers in the summer of 1993. It was such a treat to hear them play Gary Floyd live 32:17

I saw this tour. Great year for music this was...
Every era of Butthole Surfers live is so good!
Looks like Randy from the Trailer Park Boys time travelled to play guitar ...

Paul is the best
He’s amazing seen them 9 times
They'd come quite a ways since '85 when Gibby's toys were still on the floor of the stage.
WONDERFUL capture of 1 of the best bands of all time - thanks for posting!
Thanks for watching and commenting 😌

Gibby and Paul are showmen amongst showmen
i just research the luneup that year of the festival, brutal
The problem was figuring out who to go see and film
Went reading that year especially to see butthole surfers got off my face passed out and missed it
gutted
Blindman Live! Thanks for sharing.

Hahahaha, clicked on the time stamp and holy fuck talk about accuracy!
Good job. Jeffrey was a child. This was in the days of Lincoln and Mr. Cigar.
E.D.G.A.R. and Dancing Fool were epic.

Me too, in Dallas. I didn't even realize Flaming Lips were there. Became a fan later, saw Lips in Deep Ellem

I wasn't at Reading but if I mind me right, it was The Surfers did the farewell gig at the Clarendon...
Anybody know what fuzz he was using in this period? Always loved that melting sustain!
I think it's a Sovtek Big Muff. He got one while recording Independent Worm Saloon. Before that he used an orange Super Fuzz.
Thanks! I like the latter tone.

You can keep that metallica shit. This bad rocks.
They also played Reading in 1996 but I've yet to see a single bit of footage
Oh there is every chance it was recorded, I'm pretty sure I know who was there with a camera, not me, though.
Poor Gib, about in the throws of heroin here.
Alcohol, heroin and meth
KILLER!!!
Saw this show in Dallas… man.
Wait a minute you always get to be Iron Man
i WANT ACID
11 songs from Independent worn saloon? I know it was the current album at the time, but Christ.
And the amazing thing about this band is that were totally straight edge, never touched a single drug or drank alcohol. Also Gibby is a Mormon.
😂
Watched it all the through. Who is the shirtless overweight dude who came up to play with them? Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for watching all the gig and then taking the time to leave a comment, much appreciated
Looked into it john paul jones. Not sure who he was.
Paul's guitar tech -- he played second guitar on "Who Was in My Room?" with them during that whole tour.
His name is Gibby.

May I ask? Did you tape any other sets from Reading 1993?
con la bandera de Chile y nunca vinieron a Chile
Es la del estado de Texas, no la chilena.
Si cierto
they have the Chilean flag in the drums
I wonder why
Its the Texas flag
Did he say "are you ready to rock"?
Yes, it's on the record too...
Hair metal parody right there 😂
there are many weird dumb bands. There are few intelligent weird bands. BS is one of them, or the best one, perhaps.
Was the Fang cover usual?
