Oops! This mod is clearly not suited for alternate start mods. A shame really. All the author had to do was to not mention Helgen and everything would have been OK.

You can give her the skill book for flame and there's an optional file in the downloads to give her healing!
Can you give her any armor and weapons? And can you choose her combat style?
Yeah you can give her armor and weapons just like vanilla followers. There's an option in the dialogue menu related to combat

Great idea, but the references to Helgen make the mod thematically incompatible with alternate starts... A shame.
