"A letter from two Senate Democrats alleging that U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Clarence Thomas failed to disclose a yacht trip to Russia has raised questions about the Court's longest-serving member.
Senators Sheldon Whitehouse and Ron Wyden sent the letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland on July 3 accusing Thomas of failing to disclose gifts from billionaire Republican donor Harlan Crow and asking Garland to appoint a special counsel to investigate the matter.
Whitehouse is chairman of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Federal Courts and Wyden serves as chairman of the Senate Finance Committee. The senators' list of "likely undisclosed gifts and income" from Crow and his affiliated companies to Thomas included a 2003 yacht trip to Russia and a private helicopter flight to a palace in St. Petersburg, the home town of Russian President Vladimir Putin."

In light of the recent actions by the Supreme Court, I feel compelled to share my perspective. As a veteran who devoted my youth to defending our Constitution against all threats, foreign and domestic, I cannot help but feel a deep sense of disillusionment. It is profoundly disheartening to witness Supreme Court justices distort the very document I swore to uphold. Taking bribes and doing favors are actions unbecoming of those entrusted with such grave responsibilities.
Reflecting on the sacrifices made, it is with a heavy heart that I see the integrity of our Constitution being compromised. Our Constitution should be sacrosanct, a guiding light that transcends personal agendas and partisan conflicts. To see it manipulated undermines the essence of what we veterans fought to preserve.
I adamantly believe that our flag should never be flown upside down. Men died for the freedoms it represents, and our flag inspired our National Anthem. It should not be perverted, nor should the men who served be disrespected. Regardless of politics, many of us were taught the "Pledge of Allegiance." Proud men and women sacrificed their lives so that we could have the freedom to disagree. They fought because they believed in our ability to manage ourselves through freedom of choice.
While pain is felt by all, let us remain steadfast in our understanding that the best way to ensure positive change is through a system of checks and balances, a system born from its constituents. Losing does not mean that anger is the best recourse; rather, it calls for us to construct a better narrative that appeals to the masses while maintaining unwavering respect for the ideals that unite us.
