I saw The Ruts live in 1980 supporting The Damned at Shepperton, it was one of the best gigs I have ever attended, it was a Damned fanclub members only gig and was recorded and released as the live at Shepperton album that was included with The Black Album original release and then later released as a live album in its own right, The Ruts were on form that night and it was the last time I saw them live before Malcolm Owens death, Dave Vanian wrote a tribute song to Malcolm called The Limit Club, it was released on The Damned's Friday The 13th EP and is a Damned classic

Edit: it's a shame Malcolm left when/how he did, just a great band.
      As are the Damned!
I'd give ur front teeth to have been there mate....

Before l kick it... I gotta get over & go to Rebellion or some show like that.
I waited bout 30yrs to see SLF, even tho we're all getting older they were still fkn brilliant.
The Buzzcocks wd come over near every yr before Pete left & they were great... 3.5/4k singing along.
I waited til bout 83/84 to see the Damned & got kicked out... 3rd fkn song!!
They started Love Song & a bloke grabbed me so l just give him a friendly shove...that was considered 'Slam Dancing' by the establishment.
You mob are just fkn lucky.. fukyas! Ha!
Slowly, after this flus easing up, gigs are starting up again.
We've got great bands to see here too, but there not the ones l grew up listening to.

Excellent as always Adrian. Song choice and the quality of the breakdown. I know it has been said many times before, but it is so refreshing to hear these inventive punk/ post punk guitarists and their songs being given exposure, rather than the usual blues/ rock and metal, which is all over UA-cam. Not that there is anything wrong with a bit of that, but you help redress the balance.

Played this one in a covers band a couple of years ago and, at the end of the gig, a guy came over and thanked us for performing it. He said it was one of his favourite punk tracks. Definitely a great song. So glad you've added this as a lesson. Thanks as always Adrian.

Absolutely love this song, as well as The Ruts' other classic "Staring At The Rude Boys". I tabbed out the bass part a while ago, and like the guitar part it's not particularly complicated but takes some effort to play as tightly as it is in the record.

This was on the first ever album I got as a kid, one of those compilation albums which were advertised at Christmas. A couple of years later I bought The Crack with a record token I had been given as a birthday or Christmas present, this was the early 80s when you could get three new vinyl albums for about £11, I bought The Gospel According To The Men In Black and I think The Raven on the same record token. I tied an onion to my belt which was the style at the time.

Your taste in music is superb! also love your teaching style and since I´m fairly new to guitar immediatelly clicked to it. having a bass background I knew the ruts already for a long time, like their genre mix ups. They weren´t the only band to mix reggae with punk etc. Stiff little fingers, bad brains, the clash and more pop-up. But this riff in particular got me. Will give it a try.

Great Adrian! I think I was playing this one properly. I got to see The Ruts (just after Malcolm died) Before they took the Ruts DC name. Mission of Burma was the opener (Great bill). The Damned feature heavily in Ruts lore as Andrew mentioned in the comments. The Damned song “Limit Club” was an homage to Malcolm. Speaking of the Damned, I’d love to see you cover more of their material, especially since Captain Sensible took over the guitars. (Anything from Machine Gun Etiquette would be great). Thanks for The Ruts tutorial, (Yes, I’m on your patron list). Cheers!

The only time I saw the Ruts was on the Rock Against Racism march to Victoria Park in 1978. They performed on the back of a flat back truck with Misty In Roots. Ironically one of the Ruts best tracks was an anti drugs song called H-Eyes. Ironic because their lead singer Malcolm Owen died of a heroin overdose.
