  • David and Ryan are joined by the dazzlingly talented Chris Barton, creature FX artist, artist-artist, and indispensable collectible-display-making artist. Chris talks about his first career making movie-creature-magic, starting with the Henson company (Muppets! Witches! Ninja Turtles! More Muppets!) and going all the way through the Fifth Element, Star Wars, and Harry Potter. He then talks to the guys about his second career: making hundreds and hundreds of prop and costume displays for collectors like them - and like you. And why he hates mannequins.

Thanks for another fun guest, and congrats Ryan on the (subject to verification) book match. Dave, to be fair, I'm still reasonably confident I matched your Fury Road muzzle, so hopefully that checked out, at least... If not, apologies for getting hopes up.

Great show. You guys need to remember your capabilities that most of us don't have. I kill for an Aliens Grenade round or even to see or teouch the origina armor

Ryan mentions Primal at the start - that show is on Max

And now I feel called out for my wall of props in a slatwall display here in the states.

So WHERE do you get them?

The uncomfortable truth you haven't addressed yet, is that if someone were to fake a prop, the most easy thing (edit: often the most easy thing) to fake in that process is to fake a screenmatch by adding some random irregularity in the appropriate spot. To be brutally honest, in most cases, screenmatching isn't enough to prove a prop is genuine.

Not sure it's always the easiest faking step, but I absolutely agree there's a wide range in robustness of claims that get all-too-often lumped together under the screen-match umbrella. Not every screen-match is definitive, and I'd love to see this hobby adopt some standards for qualifying screen-match strength.
