You are a fantastic teacher. My 97 year old motherinlaw is an experienced knitter so I decided it would be a good activity to do with her. She is not a patient teacher. So I watch your videos then ask her to show me. It makes her happy and reduces my stress😂
That is so sweet! I bet she feels like she's the best teacher ever and you can follow her more easily with a little knowledge. ❤ I taught my daughter to knit, but we both got frustrated because I was doing it wrong. I'm sending her the link to this channel and maybe we can pick up the hobby and do it together again.
I’m so impressed with how well you explain everything. I tried reading a book about how to knit and it felt like a whole different language. This is so much better and I was surprised how easy you make it to learn the purl stitch
This is a new hyperfixation for me as someone with raging adhd and your clear and concise videos that I’ve watched so far have been more than helpful in my quick learning about all this. Appreciate it
Omg how do you manage ...do you make new things then get bored before theyre finished and start japanese caligraphy for a while? Thats what i do and im realising i may have adhd. I have so many half made things. .once i have got it i suddenly get bored and stop and start something else. 😂
I agree completely with everyone's comments, you show and explain for us beginners so well. Absolutely you are definitely one of the best teachers I have found on UA-cam. Thankyou so much for making these videos for us RJ.
I also have adhd (plus autism) and what I started doing is making a points system and set tiny goals so it’s rewarding every time I finish the goal. For example: last month I was hyperfixated on learning how to solve a rubiks cube, the first goal is to learn how. If I did then it’s done! I can stop now, or continue to achieve the next goal which will earn me more points, second goal is to solve the cube in an hour, third is in half an hour, until the very end goal I set which is under 2 minutes. (Spoilers I stopped at under 4 minutes which is very good) You see it’s like playing a game but with no pressure of completing it because it’s completely optional to not go the next stage (which is the goal) That way I don’t feel frustrated, defeated, guilt or shame if I stopped or didn’t continue because each step I do I treat it like an achievement so it’s rewarding every time This is something new I started doing and been working amazing so far so I don’t know how long I will stick to it I shared this because it might help others who have the same struggles as me For the knitting hyperfixation the next stage is to combine the purl and knit stitch, and the last stage is to knit a specific sweater that my favorite character from a cartoon wears. Pstt it’s mabel from gravity falls ;)
Hey hey R&J! Just found your videos. I learned to knit in a high school class 50 years ago. Yes....we had crafts and art and music history classes. I say (almost) as a joke that knitting was the most useful thing I learned in high school. I appreciate your videos especially because you show the fun of knitting and make it welcoming to everyone. No need to worry about precise terms for technique or to debate the merits of one approach to casting on, cables, or managing floats. If a person is interested, the information and the arguments aren't hard to find......or you can just knit merrily along and have the joy of wearing, using, or giving something that you made. Thanks for teaching and for spreading the word.
I'm so grateful for your videos! I'm 72 years old, and only learned the knitting stitch from my grandmother years and years ago when I was a young child. I have bought numerous books on knitting, but they were just too confusing to me. Now I can be a real bonified grandma that knows how to knit! Thank you!!!
Hey there Mr. R.J. I watched this video and stopped worked the pearl stitches then started to cry. I tried knitting 10 or 12 years ago and couldn't get the hang of it and just gave up. I wanted so much to learn, I watch Knit and Crochet Now on t.v., I have been a avid crocheted since eight, I love the knitted patterns and I decided I would try one more time. I'm 57 and think I'm fairly smart but just failed at learning. I started a couple of days ago watching videos and was appalled at the useless videos I was finding. Your first on casting on is totally different and so easy and then it went on to knitting and I had it down before I knew it! I watched this one on the pearl stitch you showed how easy and explained it perfectly! Thank you thank you for doing videos! I wish I found your videos first! The others I watched were confusing and I almost gave up again but because of you I know if I watch your videos I am going to be a good knitter some day! Thanks again!
I just LOVE the methodical style you have, and not talking so fast that I have to keep stopping. You're easy to keep up with. I have done crochet for years, but didn't want to retry knitting until recently. You are excellent!!
Lifelong crocheter here! I've tried different knitting videos to learn the other side of fiber arts, but I could never understand it. You are the first teacher who made it make sense for my crochet-locked brain 🥰
Aaah I literally just came from the store with knitting supplies, I was gonna follow along the first part. What a happy timing that you just posted the second part! I'll be able to follow both now, thank you so much for doing such clear and easy to follow vids!
I just want to genuinely thank you for being so nice and actually hands-on during your videos. Out of all the youtube videos I've looked at for the past two weeks, your knitting channel actually helped me start my first project. I am so thankful and keep up the work!
I am a beginner I have tried to learn knitting from so many other youtubers too but the way you teach is magical. When I follow you my knitting starts to make sense. Even if I am following someone else for big projects I have to rewatch your videos again and again for the basics.
I'm am an absolute beginner and just watched part one and learned to knit!! I searched other videos, and I just want you to know that you are the best teacher I've found, so thank you for showing me how to knit!!
Thank you RJ knits...my first attempt in knitting & purling...(only the basics for now) been crocheting for 50 years (since my grade school) God bless ! :-) :-) :-) from the Philippines
I have tried other videos but this was the best one I have found. He takes his time and doesn't rush through and goes over things several times. His voice is pleasant and it's like knitting with a friend.
Ohhh i love that baby blue color. This is the year I’m going to teach myself how to knit. I wanna learn something new. Ive been doing basic crocheting for quite sometime now and i keep telling myself i wanna learn something new.
I watched 2 other videos and had to pull off my work two times! I found you and your patient steps and video and I'm really knitting for the first time in a long time again! Thank you RJ!
Thanks ! I learned from you how to knit and you are best teacher anyone can have . I just finished scarf for my daughter and next I will learn how to do purl. Best video ever keep teaching us.
Love your tutorials. Very easy to follow. Not a lot of extra nothing. No unnecessary chatter or annoying music. Got exactly what I came for, simple basic instructions on how to knit. Thank you so much for posting, sharing and teaching!
As a crocheter, I just started knitting a couple days ago, I understood knitting pretty well because im used to working with yarn and hooks/needles. The only thing i struggled with though (which was very surprising because i thought it would be easy) was controlling the needles, i wasnt used to using two big needles, but you channel really helped me understand the entire concept of knitting, thank you
Thank you so much, for explaining everything so well. I was scared to learn to knit, for almost 2 decades. I could knit rows in 2 days, and it has been such a thrilling experience!
I took my first knitting class last night, and it was ok. Then today I decided to check out if there were any UA-cam videos and found your part 1 and this part 2 and it is soooo much better and clear! Thank you, this has renewed my faith that at some point I will be able to call myself a knitter!
I looooove your videos. I watched countless videos trying to learn and I felt rather defeated that I couldnt learn. After almost giving up, I FOUND YOU! I picked it up like ive been knitting my whole life! I love your videos! Thank you!
absolutely loving it!! l find you the perfect tutor for knitting, l usually get really frustrated when learning something new and end up throwing it to the floor but you've engaged me from the very first minute, you have a relaxing voice, your method is easy enough to listen and follow throughout and loved evere single stitch, a very grateful viewer, keep up the good work RJKnits!!
I am just picking up knitting again. After a few years of thinking I can't knit but thanks to your videos I am picking it up again. You are a very good teacher and patient with showing us how to knit, purl and other projects of yours that I have come across. I did watch your video from 10 years ago (2014) your first one and found it good. The music was ok, it's your first video on here and not easy to decide what is best. I look forward to many more of your knitting projects and wish you all the best for now. I am from UK.😀 I am a visual learner.
thank you so much for this video, I have watched 100's of videos telling me how to do this stitch and yours is the only one I can understand! you've also brought me into the world of knitting with your how to knit video! thank you!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! I just learned how to knit yesterday so I was looking for a tutorial on how to purl knit. Yours was the only one that went slow enough and made sense! Thank you so much!
Wow you're good at explaining this. I'm an avid crocheter, but knitting has never clicked with me. I try a lot of beginner tutorials trying to get some momentum and you're amazing.
I used to knit and was taught to do the purl stitch by forcing the new stitch onto the needle when pulling it under the old stitch. Hard to explain, but it was frustrating and I tended to drop the stitch! I never learned how to fix that and if I was halfway through a project (i never got past making a pot holder and a single scarf), I'd have to unravel the whole project and start again. So I never attempted anything big and went back to crochet. This video is a game changer, I'm not kidding. I can see clearly how I was doing it wrong, there is no forcing the yarn with the other needle. Holding it correctly, wrapping it around and pulling it a little tight to keep it on the needle, go under she the yarn just slides right off, like it should. No dropping it, it's securely wrapped around. It seems so simple, that zoomed in portion might have been uncomfortable for your fingernails (which are perfectly fine), but it's given me hope that I can do this. THANK YOU!
LOVE this video!! You couldn't have been ,more clear and simple. Now thanks to you, thank you so much really, I'm purling awayy. You taught me how to knit as well from part 1, thank you!!
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I've been trying to learn how to purl for MONTHS and none of the tutorials I watched were making sense to me until this one. Super grateful, thank you!
The last time I knitted anything was in the 1980’s! So glad I found your vid on knitting! Easy to follow instructions! Now to finish the scarf I started and onto using Purl 1, knit 1 etc. Thank you!!!
You make it so much easier to learn! I can fall asleep listening to your tutorials; not because it's boring but because it's so soothing! I'm definitely getting the hang of knitting, thanks to you! :D
Your videos are just what I was looking for. I learn really well from repetition, and you did enough repetitions at the right pace for me. I can tell I'm going to be saying "Scoop the loop!" to myself a lot in the next few days.
I tried to learn to knit a year ago and got frustrated and quit. Now I found your videos and you make it so easy to learn! thanks for being so clear. I am so excited that i can knit now!
Thank you for this! English is not even my first language, but I still learn better from your videos than from any other videos in my language. I've been trying to learn knitting for years now, and I always gave up after a few tries. I'll be finishing my first project in a few days. I'm still painfully slow while knitting, but at least because of your videos, I can knit!
I totally agree! I'm left-handed and I'm watching it in the bathroom vanity mirror & it's working! . I bought a few books on absolute beginning knitting and they were awful. I couldn't even understand their instructions on how to make a slip knot!! Occasionally a loop will fall off one of my needles and I get so confused. I need to learn how to recover when I make a mistake
Thank you so much ❤. I was taught how to knit by my nearly blind grandma, who couldn't really tell me if I made mistakes. I thought I had figured it out, but everything seemed unreasonably difficult (especially the purl), so I turned to crocheting instead. Two days ago I started knitting again and made a mistake that made everything go a lot smoother, so I realised that maybe I should try to start from zero. It makes so much sense now 😅
I've been a crocheter for years and had people get really snappy at me for not being able to knit as well because "it's basically the same, so why can you do one but not the other", which had me develop a rather rocky relationship with learning to knit, but these videos are sooooooo frickin' helpful ;u; Learned basic stitches from another video of yours yesterday and now purling so I start a wobbly beginner's project to practice even stitches with Thank you for these videos, they really mean the world
Best knitting teacher online! You made my knittinh interesting than what I learned in my childhood. I afraid knitting thinking of it and finally found your videos and made amazing loops. ❤
Waw, thank you young man, I agree with everyone, you are the best knitting teacher on the internet. I learned in less than 5 minutes with you. I was calm following your instructions step by step nice and calmly. Im autistic and c s n easily get frustrated and confused, but the way you taught was easy to follow and your tone of voice is calm, repetitive and very clear. Thank you....I look forward to learning loads more. 🌼😃
Thank you so much for your videos!!!! I went to knitting camp when I was like 8, and I just picked up my stuff again!! I’m picking up where I left off in my learning and you have been so helpful as I have a hard time with learning. So happy!!
I actually learned how to knit watching your videos as a crocheter it was very intimidating and frustrating I’ve watched hundreds of tutorials and successful succeeded watching you so kudos and please make more content
Thank you for your help! You’re the best I have found so far to explain knitting to me. I never thought I could do it and I definitely still have a lot to practice to get my tension right but it’s so rewarding learning something new. ❤
Your videos have helped me learn so much. I bought a learner's kit but I didn't understand what the book was saying at all until I found your videos. Now I can add knitting to my skills of crocheting and sewing. Thank you!
Once again, I can’t go away without leaving a comment. I watched another video on purling and just couldn’t get it. I couldn’t figure out how to get the stitch off the needle onto the other needle. This part could not be explained or seen behind the fingers if the knitter. It just made no sense. My stitches ended up being so tight I couldn’t work with them. I was really discouraged, thinking the problem was ME and that I’d just have to stick to the knit stitch and forgo ever being able to make the sweet baby sweaters due my granddaughter. I did decide to come to your video but honestly didn’t think it would help much. But nope, you came through yet again with a very clear video showing every single step. I finally understand that we are just flinging the loop off, not trying to put it on the other needle. It does take a bit more concentration than the knit stitch but I’m getting the hang of it and have a beautiful little swatch of pearls alternated by knits! I’m ready for those baby sweaters now. Just wanted to say thank you once again for another great video. Your videos have been a big help when I get stuck in how to do something. Thank you!!!!
This tutorial saved my sanity! I had tried the easy cast-on method and it was so stretchy and I just couldn’t manage the tension. This cast-on method finally has me feeling like I will be able to knit. Thank you!!
you are a good teacher. im so excited about learning to knit.. need something to keep my hands busy and get out of my head.. keep making videos i love them. so simple.
Awesome video!!! I have been looking for something to do indoors since my third back surgery and i think you just convinced me!!! This is it! Thank you!
You are a good teacher showing step by step and when ease of taking it slow and doing it right it's easy when you get the hang of it I proud of myself 👍
I started learning to knit last year and had to put it on hold after a while. Then when I finally was able to restart learning again, I realised that my stitches are all wonky because guess what! I didn't even understand it correctly from the other videos that I watched. Now your tutorial is so clear that knit and purl doesn't look confusing AT ALL!! Thank you for being so clear. My stitches are coming so neat, and I'm moving fast. Thank you!!!❤❤❤
I watched multiple videos and I was still clueless as far as what I was doing. Your videos are very clear and got me on my way to knitting. Thank you ❤️
As a complete beginner I really appreciate the clarity in your videos. It's definitely the most useful space I've found online for learning to knit! Thank you!!
Yippee! Finally figured out how to do this quickly with YOU! Best teacher ever! You’re not overly slow and your videos are perfect and clean. Thank you! ❤❤
I found a set of Knitter's Pride interchangeable needles a while ago at Goodwill for $3.50, and finally decided to give them a try. I've watched your how to knit video, and this one, and it's the first time I've clearly understood just where the needles go and the path of the yarn after trying to pick up knitting for years with other videos and not being able to get past the basic knit stitch. Thanks so much for the time and work that goes into your channel. I've subscribed, and look forward to exploring your other videos as my skills progress.
i actually fell asleep during this vid - it's so calming i totally zoned out! will watch again with coffee in hand this time! part one was super useful - finally figured out what i was doing wrong after several hours trying and failing to learn from a book from the 70s and my mother who knits continental style at 1000mph. youtube is the way forward. thanks dude!
Thank you!! This is the first purling tutorial that I was actually able to understand and follow. I'm excited to practice purling and then experiment with some combos 😊
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge on UA-cam, in a concise and understandable way. I’ve always wanted to learn how to knit and I’ve already made so much progress in three days due to your videos
OMG thank you, I tried 3 other videos and couldn’t figure it out. This is so much easier than the knit stitch for me. I’ve actively crocheted since I was a kid and I think this mimics that same movement more so it feels more natural.
Thank you so much for this video! I recently got a self-teaching book and its so hard to understand, but you cleared up all the confusion! I learned to crochet at 12 but this is a whole 'nother animal trying to learn!
Just started back to knit since high school And finished learning my knit stitch So excited to learn the purl stitch I've only be crocheting and surprisingly I'm doing great after some good year's 🙏🏼☺️☺️ Your video is so easy to understand thank you
You made this so easy and straightforward! I’ve been knitting for almost 8 years now but was scared to learn the purl stitch and stuck with just the knit stitch cuz most of the videos i saw made purling look tricky. This was lovely! Thank you so much!
thank you for your "how to knit for beginners". I found the slow pace and the close ups to very helpful. I want to run out and buy the supplies to follow you. Thank you again
Buy my book! You can listen to the audiobook while you knit 😇: www.amazon.com/dp/1913207390/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_JCJDE8TWQDA2XX97KT2G
Im.going to nominate you for the Nobel Purl Prize! Thanks for your great vids.
I am making my first knitting project (kitchen towel) all possible because of you! Thank you so much for teaching us all !
Do you think you will ever create a kindle version? It does sound like a fun relaxing book to read.

yep
I’m so impressed with how well you explain everything. I tried reading a book about how to knit and it felt like a whole different language. This is so much better and I was surprised how easy you make it to learn the purl stitch
same with me! Borrowed a book and I didn't understand anything, but this video was the only way I learned.
All thumbs up for visual learning 👍👍👍👍👍

This man is so dang wholesome, the new Bob Ross!
I was wondering if I’m the only one who finds his videos soothing! Lol

Wow you're good at explaining this. I'm an avid crocheter, but knitting has never clicked with me. I try a lot of beginner tutorials trying to get some momentum and you're amazing.
Same here. I crochet and have tried to knit a few times. This is the only time it has stuck and now feel like I am a knitter too!
This man is so great at showing how to knit and so adorable that I actually ordered yarn and needles to start knitting for the first time in my life
I used to knit and was taught to do the purl stitch by forcing the new stitch onto the needle when pulling it under the old stitch.
Thank gawd!! I've watched 6... SIX other videos to learn this stitch and was sooo confused 😂 this is the first time it's made sense! THANK YOU!!
As someone who can crochet and wanted to learn knitting, it was quit easy to do and understand. Your videos are really helpful!
Omg. I just watched someone else's beginner purl video & I got totally confused. Yours is so clear! 😊
I need to learn how to recover when I make a mistake
this is the only purl stitch video I've found that makes any sense to me THANK YOU
The demonstration is super influential, very easy and clear to understand
Thank you so much ❤. I was taught how to knit by my nearly blind grandma, who couldn't really tell me if I made mistakes. I thought I had figured it out, but everything seemed unreasonably difficult (especially the purl), so I turned to crocheting instead. Two days ago I started knitting again and made a mistake that made everything go a lot smoother, so I realised that maybe I should try to start from zero. It makes so much sense now 😅
I've been a crocheter for years and had people get really snappy at me for not being able to knit as well because "it's basically the same, so why can you do one but not the other", which had me develop a rather rocky relationship with learning to knit, but these videos are sooooooo frickin' helpful ;u;
Learned basic stitches from another video of yours yesterday and now purling so I start a wobbly beginner's project to practice even stitches with
Thank you for these videos, they really mean the world
Best knitting teacher online!
Thank you!
Thanks for helping me get my knitting rebooted. Going strong now.
Thank you!!
you are a good teacher. im so excited about learning to knit.. need something to keep my hands busy and get out of my head.. keep making videos i love them. so simple.
You're an excellent teacher with so much patience.
Thank you ❤️
this is the best knitting channel ever
Your holy golden needles
they're magic
As a complete beginner I really appreciate the clarity in your videos. It's definitely the most useful space I've found online for learning to knit! Thank you!!
Yippee! Finally figured out how to do this quickly with YOU!
Best teacher ever!
You’re not overly slow and your videos are perfect and clean.
Thank you! ❤❤
I've been struggling, trying to figure this out for AGES and it's finally making sense now! This is so exciting! Thank you so much!!!
Took me a good minute, but I've finally got it. Thanks so much for posting these videos!
So happy for your time. Purl has been a struggle not anymore Thanks
So helpful! I haven't knitted since I was 8, and after an hour or so of progress, I've already learned and made more than when I was a kid
Thank you so much for these videos! I am trying to teach my 9 y/o granddaughter to knit. These tutorials make it so much easier.
Great teacher! Slow, close up, great filming, repeats for us slow learners! Thank you!
Thank you so much for this video! I recently got a self-teaching book and its so hard to understand, but you cleared up all the confusion! I learned to crochet at 12 but this is a whole 'nother animal trying to learn!
Just started back to knit since high school
And finished learning my knit stitch
So excited to learn the purl stitch
I've only be crocheting and surprisingly I'm doing great after some good year's 🙏🏼☺️☺️
Your video is so easy to understand thank you
I’m currently taking knitting course but I must say I learned more from your videos than from the knitting classes. Thank you so much. X
The only person I can understand on knitting UA-cam 💗
I've been sharing your videos with my friends to self teach how to knit!
Ty so much i was prepared to spend the next few days trying to get the basics down but you’re videos have helped me get it down in a few minutes
You made this so easy and straightforward! I’ve been knitting for almost 8 years now but was scared to learn the purl stitch and stuck with just the knit stitch cuz most of the videos i saw made purling look tricky. This was lovely! Thank you so much!
Amazing. Very clear and easy to follow for beginners like me. Thank you for sharing.
thank you for your "how to knit for beginners". I found the slow pace and the close ups to very helpful. I want to run out and buy the supplies to follow you. Thank you again
