Sage, my biggest advice for your 24 hour race is to practice and use walk intervals. Even if it is only for 1 minute every 10. I was the only one who used run/walk intervals during my 24 hour backyard from the beginning and I ended up winning and setting the course record, running a 6:09 101st mile on muddy trail. Best of luck! Also, make sure you bring warm, real food to eat, especially for during the night.
My longest run ever was a 24-hour race back in 2020 (just before COVID hit). I managed 45 miles before the cold and exhaustion made me call it quits. I didn't have any ultra experience at the time so I was quite proud of myself for lasting as long as I did!
Cant wait to see how you do! Love the concept of how far can you go in an allotted amount of time. Did my first one of these a couple years back, 6 hours and a 2 mile loop. No experience at running that long, just super high mileage. Ended with 46 miles. You can certainly go above 100 in 24 if you pace right 👍🏼
Wishing you all the best in this one buddy! Going to be really interesting to follow. You'll have to train your mind just as much as your body. Good luck from Ireland 🇮🇪🍀
Glad to hear you're doing the USATF 24 hour and also guiding for the NYC Marathon. So cool! My chronic health stuff is still being very annoying in the sense that it's hard to train. Some days are brutal but if I can talk myself into getting out there for a training session, I always feel better afterwards. I keep telling myself that I'm going to research sports nutrition/hydration/stomach problems etc. because it is all confusing, there are so many different takes on it. I have a science background so hopefully that will help me. Can't wait to watch upcoming videos in this series!
love the pivot towards the 24 hour format, Sage! currently 6 weeks out from my 3rd go at JFK50! took time off work this month to attempt first ever 100mile+ week(s?) / high volume. been training allllllll year for this. woa.
Sounds awesome! Can't wait to hear more about your journey. My 10k plan this summer is ending next week and I've started to taper for a small local 14.3k farm road race. Glad for all the work I've put it and built my speed back up from busy dad-years. Getting to race will be icing on the cake.
This series will be awesome to follow along and I am already excited about how it'll go. If I think about what shape I'm in and the tactics I'd have to use I'd probably go for a 30/30 approach. 30 mins slow jog, 30 mins walk. Maybe 40/20 at best. I'm confident I'd get over 100k, maybe 140 max? I'd be curious to know, but I'll stick to my 24h unsupported DIY cycling challenge instead. Good luck and most importantly enjoy it! Better come home with a positive memory than pushing it, going too fast and pulling out too early
Hi Sage, I think this kind of race will be great for you. I think you’ll blow past the 100 mile mark then you’ll expand your mind as to other kinds of races/challenges that you can do. I’ve done 6 and 12-hour races and ran as far as I ever have, and I’m slow as mud. Good luck on the training!
You just missed the 24 Hours of Palmer Lake Ultra, down near Monument CO. 0.82 flat miles around a lake for 24 hours. It's super chill; you can run as much or as little as you want, and if you hit 100 mi, you don't even have to stay 24 hours to get your buckle.
24 hours can be incredibly difficult. So many things can go wrong..too fast start, too many stops, no headphones, good luck...stop less than you think..run slower than you think...get that U.S team spot.
This. The last 2x I did it for the first time ever boredom became a factor. When things got hard it became easy for me to tell myself “I’m not having any fun, just stop”
@@Vo2maxProductions I would email Jamil or the RD but the paved loop course I do here in NJ headphones are allowed but to be courteous to people going faster than me trying to pass, I only put in 1 AirPod
Living in Massachusetts all we pretty much have are timed ultras in New England. They range from 6-72hrs I’ve seen. I personally enjoy training by time versus miles. On race day I like knowing I’m not alone on the course ever.
Well, good luck to you. I’m doing a 12 hour around 1 mile place at a park this weekend not going for any speed. This is a tuna race for 100 coming up sub again in a month. I got 100 K more flat and then my hundred is beast of the east with about 19 to 20,000 feet again so it’s gonna end the yearwith three races good luck to you
Good luck Sage with NYC Marathon pacing & the backyard ultra, just curious, do you think you’ll ever get back to flat fast road marathon? Pb or first in age group? Or first in age group for all of the six star majors marathons?
Yes, I plan to put in a solid marathon focus block for Boston. But I'm afraid my days of getting a PR (or even cracking 2:20 again) are behind me....mainly because of the lung damage from the Pullmonary Embolism. Also, Masters podium at a major is still super hard (like there are guys running sub 2:15 easy at age 40!). I think I might be able to run sub 2:25 (if good weather!) still though...we'll see! I'll also be 39 years old for Boston in 2025.
@@Vo2maxProductions yep I think you’ll do good you’ve been doing some excellent running lately, yeah I forgot it’s so hard competitively in your age group, bit easier in my old man 60 a group ha, good luck 🏃🏽♂️✅👍👊🏼
Thanks Sage that's an interesting challenge. Will you be comparing notes in the lead up with people who have competed more often in these 24 hr events?
I've looked at some notes from guys like Nick Coury. Trying to get in some more actual science and objective training (rather than just winging it....like I'll admit I kinda tried to for UTMB....I got lazy!).
Mainly road shoes now (to be featured in more vids for HOKA of course!). Right now I am getting to like the Cielo X1 a bit more now although I think the Rocket X2 is still the "Fastest shoe" for me. I also really like the Solimar, the Clifton 9 and am still deciding about the Mach X2 and the Rincon 4.
Ran a 24 hour loop & ended up pissed that the race wasn't longer than 24 hours. So much could be done in a longer race. Ended up having better things to do after 19 hours. They had a belt buckle for the 100k finishers, so that's where a lot of us dropped out.
I'm not sure what time we'll be starting at exactly (maybe a different start?). But yeah if you're around (and we're around a lot of other people) you can certainly key off of me probably. For my guiding I am 1-1 on with my assigned athlete...so my job is to take of him no matter what, and adjust the pace ideally for him (rather than a strict 2:40 pace no matter what or an actual "group pacing" gig). It's through Achilles International.
@@Vo2maxProductionsamazing! I won’t interrupt/interfere in anyway - but been a fan for close to a decade and keying off you, if only for a few miles, would be cool! You are a part of the reason I am even able to attempt 2.40 goal!
First of all, your channel is of course a must for every runner ✌🏼 I have a question about regeneration: yesterday I watched a video of yours from years ago about how long you should recover from a marathon and the recommendation at the time was already rather long for all performance levels. Nowadays, many people do several marathons in a row of just weeks and you do this 24-hour race, for example. Has the evidence changed or is it specific to you simply because you have become better able to cope with the mechanical stress over the years? Anyway wishing you all the luck for the next chapter 🍀
I'd still take a few weeks off of training after a hard road marathon and then (if I was serious about a fast time) would have to train for months before my next one. In 2015 I ran 2:20:02 at LA and then 7 weeks later ran 2:19:12 at Boston....but it was a very hard "double" to pull off and I considered that a really short time span for such efforts. We generally don't recommend it. I've also gotten away with doing ultramarathons on the trails (usually 50km to 50-miles) on back to back months (i.e. like 10 a year)...but it was certianly not ideal. For people that race more often they are usually not going 100% I'd say (or at least they are not peaking for a 100% performance). It would be easier for me to do a bunch of marathons at 80-85% of my full potential (I could probably do one almost every week!). I'm not interested in that yet though. Supershoes have probably helped a tad as well as being smart with nutrition/diet and sleep and doing "all the little things" to recover.
Thank you very much for this assessment. I have no experience with ultras and ran Boston this year, apparently perfectly prepared🎉. I consistently ignored your video warning about energy distribution and Greg's warning about the warm tailwind🤪... After 2:56:22 in Berlin, my goal was 2:50 in Boston, especially since it is my ability to run relaxed and rolling downhill and I thought the first and last quarter of the Boston course would be a gift 🤦🏻 The result was 3:12:01 and cramping, snake-like leg muscles with pain of an unprecedented magnitude. That justifies the negative split mantra, at least in case of feeling and maybe even-split as you said. Now I have surprisingly received two confirmations for two marathons within 7 days. After further consideration, thanks to your tip, I will run the first one with 80% effort, or change to a shorter distance. Since the goal of your 24-hour run is to run more than five times the distance of a marathon in one go, I was a little unsure about the interpretation of the whole context😅
No. However, I am doing some "fasted long runs". I will also be doing some long runs where I really smash carbs. By running high mileage all the time your body gets more efficient at burning fat as a fuel regardless of diet type. During the race I don't plan on taking more than 400kcal/hr though.
Sage, my biggest advice for your 24 hour race is to practice and use walk intervals. Even if it is only for 1 minute every 10.
