    Great information in this training talk. I don't mind the product plug because I understand that it is necessary. I think your content is worth watching a paid advertisement for. I like how you discuss the specific workouts you did to prepare for specific race paces. Keep up the great work.

    Great video sage thank you as always. You explain things so clearly that even an amateur (as I was) can understand but then when you are more experienced you still learn things every time too.
    I'm starting the bq plan in 4 weeks time. I used your 10k plan last year and after failing to break 40 (when I really should have) produced a low-36 min.
    Fingers crossed for my first marathon in October. Keep doing what youre doing you're amazing 👍

    Thank you, Sage. You're always speaking from the experience and explaining the details in easy ways. I started watching your videos a year ago and that's when I started running as well. I learned a lot from you and I ran my first marathon last year, finished in 3:39. I never thought I will be able to run such a long distance and during my marathon training I was always struggling and not believing that I could run the whole 26.2 but after every training session I was getting stronger and faster. Thank you for your videos and sharing your experience, I appreciate it so much. I am thinking to break a sub 3 hours marathon next time, and I know for a person like me the training going to take a lot of effort.

    Thanks Sage, this confirms what I'm doing and what my coach usually advises. My goals for this year are 5k and 10k races and I'm struggling little bit with the 5k race strategy. I know it is a short race but not that short that I don't need some kind of a strategy. So I recently had a race and at the start I lost some time due to the course being so narrow and I wanted to get back that lost time in the first km and I felt like that wasn't a good idea. In the end I didn't have that extra gear what I hoped for. But o the other hand I also felt like that is a typical bad day when my HR is all over the place and no matter what I do it wouldn't change a thing.

    Great observations, especially concerning how it can all be a moving target, and I imagine advanced runners can follow this advice with good results. But speaking as a non-advanced runner, running slow to run fast has proven tricky. If I haven't learned to recognize how it feels to hold my target pace during the training block, I've never managed to get it right on race day with its added stress and excitement.

    I wish someone would post a waveform graph that could be superimposed onto a speed/distance/time graph that would work for people of different age/condition/experience. Something that would "look" the similar for everyone but change as you enter your age/vo2max/weight and the TYPE of running you want to do (track or trail etc). The other problem is that not everyone has the same toughness to resists injury.

    i feel like what could help with the google adsense problem is to address more beginner issues instead of marathon/ultramarathon. the amount of people at 5k/10k/21k is more than at marathon/ultra

    Sage, my LT is getting very close to my 1 mile PR. Thing is, to hit my target MP I'm going to need to improve my LT by about 10-15 seconds. Basically, for the last two years now, my top speed has not improved at all, only my ability to hold higher speeds for longer has. It's gotten to the point where my threshold is just barely under top speed. I can't increase my vollume any higher due to schedule restraints. How do you suggest I fix this? Should I focus on my mile for a while, then come back to LT and MP? Like, almost training in reverse? Some other strategy?

    For the next couple of weeks I’m just going to run 10 miles every day at a slow conversational pace, and I notice when I do that that I can run every day 70 miles a week, and my legs don’t feel tired, where as when I run 50 miles a week just 6 days a week with one 20 mile long run I noticed that my legs feel like garbage, and that it’s hard to recover from. I’m just going to run 10 miles everyday for the next 2 or 3 weeks just to get in the miles, and build my aerobic base. I’ll go back to doing long runs, tempo runs, and speed work though in a few weeks.

      That's likely because a 20 mile long run is too high a percentage of your weekly mileage. Especially doing that method week after week. The day off becomes negligible in terms of recovery with that rotation. You may find that a short (3-5) shakeout the day after will help speed recovery as opposed to a day off 🤷‍♂️

      I implemented the high milleage recepi in 2022. I didn't work.
      I'm training much smarter this year and I'm getting spectacular results.
      Do your own experimentation, but I no longer believe in this type of training.

    I think I both agree and disagree with you at the same time - I do think some workouts are good to have MP miles in them but understand where you are coming from. For my self and the folks I coach I think knowing how it feels is a good thing both for the beginning when folks are too fast as well as what it may feel like at the end of a race so I do add some in especially at the end of a long run I think its helpful but typically its a range that I recommend in there. I also put one in at a some point where we vary the pace a little so do a bit at MP and then a bit faster and a bit slower without them looking at the watch and ask them to tell me what they think it is - so they can really get that feeling and know what it is without always relying on external feedback

      Joking aside, you have said in this video what I have been banging onto folks about for years that you don’t know your MP till later on into training schedule and you don’t have to train at MP. Solid advice 🏆

    Hi! I’ve been running for a couple of years now and I want to run I marathon next august 27, I haven’t been training regularly the last few month and my last race was a 5k on April (sub 19), do you think I could make it with just 8 week for training?

    For a long time now, I’ve considered Marathon Pace to be the top end of “junk mile pace”. Sure, adaptations can and do occur there, but not as optimized as they would be running 1:30 slower at the top of Zone 2 or running 20-30 seconds faster up in the mid to high zone 4.

      +1, for most people marathon pace is 'feel good pace' you feel good because it isn't challenging, you get tired doing the distance. The ratio if fatigue to stimulus is terrible.

    Super interesting. Marathon pace is such a hard thing to nail down. I ran my first marathon in March in 2:57, which was really hard work. The course had about 1300 feet of hills, and although I wanted to negative split, I ran a slight positive split. Now I’m about 2 months out from my next marathon (a net downhill race) and I’m still not exactly sure what I’m capable of. My training plan is now emphasising more speed work alongside the 60 mile weeks, and I have a few tuneup races coming up next month, but it often feels like such a guessing game!
