Klein frames always has like a "saint aura" around them. Since I'm living in Argentina, I've never seen one of these beauties personally, but always remember the "storm" paint of Tinker Juarez's Adroit frame with the SL Mag 21. Great video, and as always, thanks for share it with us! Big hug!

@@oldshovel as I have 4 of those frames-dont play with a stem and bars-answer always was:bars straight max 610mm,580 wat shud be,and any crowbar will destroy handling.ANY stem under 110mm will destroy handling.Try to keep Your stem as high as U can,drop a saddle a bit.Love the video to passion!all d best Dude

Regarding running cables through the internal fittings; I've found that turning the frame so the tube you're running the cable through is vertical really helps. That's my go-to on my Klein's (yeah, multiple). Also, start at the upper and let gravity help with the cable. I kinda shuddered when you pulled out the drill!
Cringe, at least it wasn't a hammer lol.
This is the best way ive found to do it as well. haven't had one beat me yet.
When I did mine, I vacuumed a string through the frame, taped the cable liner to that and pulled it into place!
@@ballisticviii Great idea 💡, I will remember that one. I was thinking, laying it on the side as well. Anything to avoid a drill. Especially if those internal cable ferrules are in good shape. I actually yelled NO, when I saw the drill. Great looking bike tho.
@@ballisticviii As an electrician, I would have done the same. Or drop string in with lots of extra slack. Use a folded thin wire to snag the string from the other hole opening.

I loved when you drilled out the internal cable routing ends. Sometime, you just have to, or else the frame is just a bunch of unusable pipes. Beautiful build.
Made me cringe. Just use some thin MIG welding wire to route the cable.
I cringed so bad too. The solution I would suggest in future is a piece of string with a vacuum cleaner to pull it out the other side

I used the vacuum method for my adept race. Definitely cringed when he drilled out the stops

I have always wanted a Klein myself, especially the Mantra. I know that URT designs are considered bad tech as far as suspension goes, but I still like them. I still own a 1998 Barracuda XC URT frame that I bought in 2008 as a NOS purchase. It still had the original factory packaging and stickers on it when it arrived after buying it off Ebay for $102. I am looking at building it up as a sorta "Softtail" 26" gravel bike w/ a 1x and rigid fork or even go simpler a single speed gravel. I actually rode it built up for ten years on trails, it even made the Rewind segment on GMBN when I sent them a pic.
I had a mantra race new back in 1998.
I loved the look so much but I have to admit,
I sold a 1997 team issue GaryFisher Supercaliber with Red anodized Ringle parts to afford it and had it for a couple of months before selling it for another Supercaliber.
The standup to lockout was awesome on climbs but the thing had a tendency to want to buck you off if you came out of the seat slightly over big bumps.
Launched me a few times before I went back to the hardtail. My Sugar 1 never did that. Just a heads up if you do get the Mantra ever. Stay seated or stay standing. Don’t try to transition while going over something. It doesn’t like it. Lol 👍
(Also, be ready for tons of people to ask “is that one of those folding bikes?” Ugh! I got that on almost every ride.) she was beautiful though!
@@WristwatchAddiction My Barracuda XC was a URT with a different pivot location than the Mantra....heavier too because it's full chromoly, I rode the crap out of it.

put 27.5 wheels,rigid,good fork,580mm carbon bars with 25.4mm Race stem[at least 110mm]and U`ll get a havoc.
I still ride my '92 Klein Rascal, that I bought as a frame in '92 and have rebuilt 6 or 7 times. My favorite bike of all time!

Lovely. Love the Klein and Cannondale frames from the 80’s..early 90’s era. There were some very light bikes around in those days..titanium and some very light aluminum bits..had an early set of Pace Carbon legged air/oil shocks that were super light. Keep the content coming please.

For your hydraulic hose, you had to drill the frame anyway. Your rear disc brake converter is the interesting thing for real.
But, for your next internal cable routing, if the park tool set doesn't fit really good, just use a Shimano positron shifter cable / wire!
Make a little hooks in both ends, and then you put them inside from both openings, and let them " meet
Found your channel yesterday and already had so much enjoyment bringing those old mountain bikes back to life and restoring them. A friend kindly gave me a 1989 Puegeot Laser which has by turned a wheel for many years and has been covered up in a garage, which I'm in the process of restoring. Many thanks once again. Des P.

I done almost the same build with my Klein Attitude, going with the Sellution Componants disc adaptor. Fitted 650b disc wheels and 42mm tires. Rockshox Duke XC air fork. Rides like a dream. Great gob on this resto mod 👍

Building my Klein palomino, i basically taped every single opening on the frame, super glued a thread on to the cable, put it into the cable opening and used a vacuum cleaner to suck out the thread from the other side.
Always wanted a klein. Especially the green/blue paint.
Gmbn tech did a piece a while back about somebody who had an amazing collection of retro kleins👍. Worth a watch if your a fan.

A solid fork and single speed build with carbon bars, seat post, alloy bolts throughout and obviously tubeless on lightweight tires, now that would be a weight weenys dream
I almost went single speed on this one.
I also always wanted a Klien, found one on facebook marketplece for $100.00. jumped on it, it was a gut replaced everything. Preserved the paint as best as possible. rides nice and has awesome paint. will try t switch over to disc now. nice job.

Cool! The Klein Attitude was my first MTB back in the days..
Easy way to route internal cables, cotton through first hole, vacuum cleaner pipe the other hole, suck through cotton, tie on string pull through, tape on cable to string pull through.
I just brought my 2001 klein attitude comp to get fully broken down and rebuilt, putting thumb shifters on as well...love my Klein and stoked for this video...wish I had your talent sir...keep the videos coming!

He wasnt the FIRST one who built MTB-frames, like Ritchey and such, but Klein's ideas and paintJobs are just breathtaking,

For the internal cable routing...just use a verly light string of rope and a vaccuum cleaner. Works most of the time.
Sat here nursing a hangover having watched England v Wales at Twickenham yesterday and was just thinking a new Old Shovel video would be perfect!

Very cool! I bought a Klein Attitude Race in that same color back in the spring of 1997. I still have it today with all the original manuals and documentation. I brushed the dust off it the other day and I'm actually thinking of selling it. 55 years old and just no time to enjoy it so I figure it deserves someone who can.

For internal holes like that you can feed a piece of thread through and put a hoover on the other end. It works a treat everytime
4:30 watching you press fit the bearing cups whereas just about 2 hours ago I hammered in new bearing cups into my very worn and old 26 inch mtb😂 used wood though so no damage at all

A simple Trick to put a Cabel thru the Frame. Take a old Shiftwire from a Shimano Positron thru the frame and then put the Shiftcable on the wire, and take it through the frame.

You definitely made the old cool again! Been doing this flipping of my friends’ old bikes in which deserve a 2nd time appreciation due to its sturdy built and quality. And it’s more fun to ride a bike when you put effort and touch of artistry to it. You and Seth @bermpeak are my inspiration in doing this...
Which I would do the same! This type of frame with an internal route for only the cables is complicated even with this Parktool kit... But the drill solves it! I'm amazed at the variety of parts available out there, like this disc brake adapter. An excellent montage!
Yeah this was impossible to route that's why we ended up hanging the frame instead of building it (I work at the salt lake bicycle collective). I tried for a while but you have to fit the cable through a 3mm hole at the end of the housing stop in the frame (non removable stop). Also the cables were supposed to cross inside the frame. Unfortunately someone pulled the cables out so there was no guide to route them, and as we can all see the park tool magnetic router didn't work. It makes me happy to see you drilled it, I wouldn't do that to one we were selling but that's a great way to save this frame!
Lol thanks for chiming in Owen, I had head you messed around with this one for a while trying to get it to work. I should have crossed them over as you mentioned. I realized that after I was done that for the cable routing it would have been a lot cleaner and probably jussi as easy after drilling the stops out.
I had the great pleasure of owning a Klein when I was growing up. The exact same bike in lime green that hung in the background in Jerry's apartment in Seinfeld. What an amazing machine. And no, I didn't grow up rich. I bought it used in 1989 for $600 from a pretty sketchy dude. It was obviously stolen and long story short, after about 3-4 years of great memories, someone else decided to reappropriate it for themselves. Oh well, Such is life.

Love the channel! However you desecrated the heck out of that Klein by drilling it. The metal cable stops are easily removable from the frame. It's not necessary to remove them however. Frame cable sleeves are used inside the frame. Available from klein'spainted. Welding or bailing wire is used to route the internal cable housings. The unique engineering is part of what makes a Klein a Klein. You need to do a Klein redemption build complete with pressing in bottom bracket and headset bearings. Working on Klein's is an art form!
I admit I’m not steeped in the art of working on Kleins but look forward to honing the skills. 😁🙌
My dad had a black and gold Attitude in the 90’s. Maybe the most beautiful bike I’ve ever seen. I think it was back with gold sparkle and gold lettering.

Cool build. After 15 years off a bike I just bought 3 old bikes. The best one is a 1998 Klein Attitude Comp that seems all original with Rock Shocks, but has some nice Ritchey bars. Been riding it now, but Im going to take it apart for some love soon. Paid $200 and its in good shape.

I have a Klein and those metal eyelets do actually come out. I typically gently tap them out with a small screwdriver and a hammer. Once they are out routing with a magnet is easy. Then they can be re-installed, they will also come out easier if you ever have to do it again in the future. For anyone else working on Kleins use this method, you do not need to drill them out.
Agreed. I use a machine thread bolt of the appropriate diameter (determined by trial and error), thread it into the cable stop insert, and pull the insert out. That makes the openings much larger and a simple rod or even straightened wire hanger makes the routing simple.
Back in those days Klein always had teflon tubes inside the frame , when they were worn out most people just pulled them out ! Awesome job mate I restored many Kleins and know how much work it can be to repair those ! Good job ! .....just as a friendly warning : Never ever mess with the paint of a Klein if you relay don't have to !!! removin the paint is a nightmare on its own because they used a very special aluminium based base coat ! Just the last builds had normal paint on it befor Klein quit and were sold to Trek .
Thanks for the tip on the paint. I had not heard this about Kleins. That said I have found that a lot of primers struggle with adhering to aluminum so if I repaint an aluminum frame I try to leave the previous paint if it’s not pealing off because I doubt anything I would replace it with would work better. So I just try to smooth out the old paint and rough it up (with 220 or higher) so it will hold the new paint.
Good idea ! I had to restore once a 1992 Klein Attitude with badly damaged paint (original sunflare paint) and the customer wantet a flipflop paintjob ....removing the paint and the primer took me more than a week , after that I had to use a very special and extremely expensive primer ! The small can was barely enough for one layer and was more than 70 bucks ! The weird thing is if the base coat is not damaged it looks like the paint ist just sitting on a naked frame , but in my case the bike was out in the weather for a long time and the primer had holes were water got into and froze in winter . You can imagine my face when I had to peel off the base coat like pieces of foil ! So in my mind this stuff is maybe some similar stuff like the JB weld thing or maybe they used some weird component to spray weld on ...I have no clou at all because you won't find much about it in the web !

Wow what a score, a Klein frame for $150! Nice build! And it's a small thing, but I really like that blue color.
Keep an eye on marketplace, I got an 03 with all factory bontrager parts, for $200, it had a Terry woman's seat, I replaced, both new tires and tube, all cables, and Santori set back bars. All original xt parts are in good condition. I'm in it for about $325 in immaculate condition. They are out there.

@@haqitman hey, mine is 17” and I’d say they run large on the early 2000 bikes. I’m 5/8, and top rail is right at my crotch. If you get the chance, try a 20”.

Nice build...had a Attitude Race in Blue, full XTR build, with Rock Shock Judy...sold to a guy for his kids....tried to buy the Ringle-Kooka Stubs off him...can't find them, they quit making them, because peeps were sticking their finger in them and breaking fingers and or wrist...the only bar end I ever liked...

As you can see from your Klein frame and the age of it, there have been internal frame frames for many years. And, for many years there was "no" internal frame tool to help.There are a number of tricks to get everything through the frame and do it quite quickly. The easiest is to simply use a large magnet and that magnet will drag a cable or housing through. Love seeing the old Klein frames though. Thanks for sharing!

@@stuvademakaroner9607 ya hopefully one day I will try to give it a shot, the Trek 3700 was my first premium bike and I plan to keep it forever. Its is still awesome even after a decade. But honestly his work is so professional, I will never ever reach those standards :-) Also we don't get all the accessories, tires, suspension fork, spray paints etc easily here like how its available in the US. For Eg. I am still not able to get the Bontrager 26 inch tires for my bike since 2019. I also want to get my Suntour suspension fork replaced. My Authorised trek dealer has said Trek has almost stopped importing cycles and accessories here since the pandemic. He also told that for the suspension fork, he can place an order but he is not sure if they will accept the order. I can replace it with some third party parts but I wanted the original accessories.

i noticed when you were mounting the tire that you were finishing it away from the valve.. if you finish at the valve you wont need tire levers.. dont ask me why but it works 100% of the time.
