Hey everyone, check out the description then leave a comment if you’d like! There’s a light build list in the video description and a couple links 🤙 Some of the clips have a bit of wind noise so I think I’ll get a wind reduction thing for some of the windier days, going forward. Cheers! 🫶🤩 See you in the next video!

I appreciate that you take the time to service and repair the components for as many bikes that get binned there must be a ton and a half of components that get wasted.
Finally i found out about brake booster, is to prevent the seatstay bent during heavy braking. learn a lot from this video, cheers from your neighbor Indonesia!
My 1991 SM500 is a delightful bike to ride! I upgraded it with a threadless stem, Surly Moloko bars, 26x2.1" Gravel Kings, and a Brooks saddle. It has become the bike I reach for, every time
Awesome! That sounds like a great combo, are you liking the Moloko bars then? Haven’t tried them yet, but they look tempting! The Brooks/GravelKing combo is one of my favourite 🫶
@@toastyrides The Moloko bars are completely worth the investment! I wrapped the horns, a bit towards the grips, and towards the stem. I find that I spend most of my time in the horns. I think the 35° sweep feels more manageable than the 45° on the jones bar, or any alt bar for that matter. I'm keeping those till I die
Renaissance cycles (where this bike was originally purchased) was my bike shop growing up. It still exists today. The new owners (hilltop ie specialized) kept the renaissance name since it has some history.
I didn’t know that, that’s cool! I heard it was taken over by Specialized but it’s nice they kept the name. If you’re ever in there you can share the story of how an old Cannondale made its way to New Zealand, somehow, for me to enjoy 🤙💖
I was super impressed with how you handled those TINY bearings! wow! I would have lost half of them. And you did it while wearing gloves! Great video, I enjoy watching people taking older machines and making them useful again. Thank you for sharing! I liked the riding footage too. I was impressed with the variety of non-automobile transport other people were using as well. Where I live 99.9% of people use automobiles and if the ride it's an exercise bike indoors.
They sucked 😂 I should have taken the gloves off, it definitely made it harder 😆 Thank you for watching! Oh woah, that’s cool to hear. Lately more people have been using bikes, e-scooters and e-bikes 👍 it’s great to see as it feels more community-like, in a way, when you’re travelling slow around the city and outside. Great for mental health, too. Feels better to ride more!
I actually live right by Bicycle Renaissance, the shop this was originally sold at. It closed during the pandemic and there's a Specialized dealer that took over the space. Their sign is still up though. It was a pretty cool shop
Thanks. I bought a 1993 Trek Single Track a year and a half ago. US Steel “cromeolly” stiff and responsive. Great old frames. I’ve yet to do much modding other than the seat and crank set. One thing at a time. It’s such a great ride I rarely miss my racing bike. 😊
Thanks for your inspiration. I just refurbished an '90s Giant Nutra. Cleaned up the rust with brushes, coke and aluminum foil. Kept the patina on the bars, frame and seat post. Added a new saddle, grips and fenders. Looks and rides great.
Thanks, Levi! That’s going to be a fixed gear bike with a new paint job, for me, but I have a couple other 700c road bikes to build/restomod as well 😎🤙
I feel like greeting others while riding a bicycle is the natural thing to do. Appreciate your thoughts on the Hookworms… been eyeing those for awhile.
turned out great! i never knew brake boosters actually worked it was cool to see how they limited some of the flex, nice vid as always catch ya in the next one :D
Thanks, Gary! Haha yeah I thought they were pretty gimmicky to be honest 😆 wish I had a better video of the flex to show, but it was noticeable in the lever 🤌

Love it! Great timing, I just bought a 1986 Cannondale this week. The attention to detail for hiding the welds back in the day was impressive. It has damaged U-brakes, so my V-brake spares box can't help unfortunately.
Oh cool! Perfect timing 😎🤙 sounds like good buy! Those old u-brakes can be pretty good, they’re just not good in mud haha I did a video on a Panasonic with u-brakes and they worked quite well!
I have a Schwinn Homegrown with Hookworkms and love them! for commuting they are great. you can lean them way over. I had cones setup in the neighborhood practicing slaloms. And the power slides are amaziballz! I pulled a few screeshers downtown to the pint that a walker commented that it was impressive. So much fun on those tires!
It’s grown on me a lot, the grips and barends will stay! Can’t imagine it any other way now. Will strengthen the basket support though, the upper mount is a bit thin. I did a wheelie with a load one day and it bent when the front end dropped 😅
Thank you for your videos! Love learning about bikes from you. I see you sometimes on the cycleway and ding hello. It's great to see your bikes in action. Cheers!

Very neat built, as usual! I also have the Kyote bars on a 95 Kona I have converted to a commute/all around and they are indeed very large, I cut them quite a lot to have to feet (I'm 165cm....)
Thanks! I love the Kyote bar, very comfy bar 👍 yeah I think it could use cutting down a smidge to better fit in some places haha. But it seems to be ok so far, just have to be a bit cautious of them. I did actually smack the handlebar on a rubbish bin after I stopped filming, but it was rubbish day and bins were all over the path 🥴 I prepared for it and moved my hands inwards, so the barend took the force of it haha
Wish I'd seen this build sooner, the way you made the most of the chipped paint by smoothing it out. Am restoring an old Peugeot with tons of scratches. Tried everything but the obvious. Had it blasted instead and must now paint the bugger.
Oh dang! Well now you know for next time 😎🥳 haha, will be good knowledge to have in the back of your head if you happen to see a cool but scratched bike for sale 🤙

@@jamesdarge yeah it’s a steel steerer tube, triple checked haha 👍 I guess it’s a replacement fork, which is cool 😎 Ooh and a quick Google shows it would’ve even had a bit of light blue at the dropouts, which I didn’t know! 🤌 if I find a similar colour then I may paint it 👍 or I could get it matched..
You can tune the bell with some self-adhesive ruber strip . Cut tiny pieces and place in conspicuously on bell or inside if you can. Do this till you get the desired volume
Nice! I worked on this same frame as a courier for years! Hey, get rid of the pepperoni death trap fork though, those were recalled because alloy forks are sketchy as hell and always fail. The headtube is 1 1/4, so you can easily put a 1 1/8 threadless headset and fork with a problem solvers adaptor. 🤙

sick build! i am planning to build a retro commuter bike the same set up like yours. but instead of 8 speed, i'll use 11-42t 9 speed casstte. the problem is that i don't know if the cheap friction shifter i bought in ali express will work.
Another awesome video! That driveside rear dropout looks sketchy as though. Is it supposed to look like that? I know these had a history of catastrophically failing and it seems bent and dimpled at the welds.
Thank you! Yeah that’s just how they are, I don’t really know why they did that extension/cantilever anyway but I know they had a reason. Just can’t remember why!
Hey! So my list of 59cm toptube bikes seem to run a seattube about 53-56cm (21-22inches). It varies, though! My Bridgestone is a bit less than that in the seattube but has a 59cm toptube Hope this helps!
@@toastyrides Thank you, 21 inches seems too big for me, I have 182cm height. Usually I like the bicycles with a close reach, I compared the reach from my modern to this classic bike, and the modern one has -10cm which is quite a lot.
Hi mate, I have an old Rayleigh mountain bike from around year 2002. It's a great bike however the issue is one of the rear V brake callipers is not working very well. I undid the noodle and it works fine aka the spring but when I re put it back on it sticks ... would you know how to resolve it?
Why would you "usually use cantilevers" - to stay true to the time the bike came from? V-brakes break much better, which makes them the more reasonable choice IMO if you intend to use the bike. Great vid!
Oh I don’t really care much for period correctness on most of my bikes haha. Well setup cantilevers (Compressionless housing, koolstop pads and the correct straddle cable length etc) are more than strong enough. I can skid fully loaded and I weigh over 100kg(excluding the bike and load weight). A friend uses them on a tandem and he likes them on that, too. Cantis have a nicer progressive lever feel than v-brakes, in my opinion. V’s have a nice initial bite, but some of the longer arms of v’s flex when pulled hard. So it’s my preference, even though you may think v’s are better-my opinion differs and that’s allgood 🤙 Thanks heaps, glad you liked the video! 🥳

@@toastyrides Thank you, 21 inches seems too big for me, I have 182cm height. Usually I like the bicycles with a close reach, I compared the reach from my modern to this classic bike, and the modern one has -10cm which is quite a lot.
Very cool build! What kind of ahead adapter did you use here? The 1 1/4 to 1 1/8 are pretty hard to find. Thanks
So it’s my preference, even though you may think v’s are better-my opinion differs and that’s allgood 🤙
Thanks heaps, glad you liked the video! 🥳
And as for the “if you intend to use the bike” remark, on average my most used commute bike is my Hardrock/Stumpjumper build (which has cantis) 😯
Hi, great job! Its posible to repair the same problem (paralelogram) in a pair of XTR v-brakes or it have a diferent sistem? Thanks!!!
Hey, thank you! I haven’t done it but I think they disassemble like the XT ones so should take a shim the same 🤙🫶
@@toastyrides thanks, man! Keep on truck'n with your channel, its great and I learn a lot.
This old bike looks more elegant than my 2017 Foxter🤦♂
Haha 😅 guess you know what your next bike purchase will be 😎🤌😆
Thanks for sharing
What kind of bike is it !
