- Today I explain the DSG gearbox on the VW California T6.1 - for those of you who have never used a DSG gearbox it's slightly different to a traditional automatic gearbox and it's VERY different to a manual gearbox, but it's very simple to use.
There are some tips and tricks like how to enable Sports Mode and Manual Mode, but it's very straightforward. Let me know if you have any questions after watching this explainer.
I also finish this episode with a quick Q&A to wrap up some questions I got from my most recent videos. Be sure to hang around for the answers to those at the end.
Thanks for watching. California Chris.

Probably the best - and shortest - explanation of the VW DSG transmission I've ever seen! And I've seen quite a few...
Glad you think so!
Great video. That's the first time I've seen the VW gearbox fully explained. 🍷🍺👍
Glad it was helpful!
Another good video. Any info on decent control function.
Thanks Chris, I was a little worried about DSG but after watching you I know I will be ok. I have been driving automatics for years so just a few little things are different, particularly where to put my left foot lol. I have a footrest in my BMW. That's definitely something different.
Glad to help
Thanks Chris great video as usual, quick question, there is an option for the ocean to upgrade the agm alternator, is that to do with the starter motor or presumably it’s a bigger capacity leisure battery? Can you give us more information on the length of time you could do without charging the leisure battery and how much longer that option would give you? Ie is it a single lithium battery and what volts and amps etc?
Thanks
Ed
Hi Chris daft question for you why do auto gear box. When it’s in park why is reverse from park not drive? 😮😅
Great video. I have a dsg and didn't know about the sport or manual function. Something to play with now thank you
Glad to help! Some people knock in to Sports Mode and don't know what they've done!
How does the 4X4 work on the California
Thanks for all great videos. They are very helpful. Would it be possible to show how to lower the roof manually on the T6 and T6.1 Ocean. Thanks
Hi Tony, I covered this in my latest Q&A video. In short: yes you can, but I wouldn't advise it - if you're stuck it may be worth calling for roadside assistance, but I do let you know how to do it in the video for emergencies.
Hi Chris
Love videos , cannot find coasting function on new t6.1 dsg 199 highline , has it gone ?
Dave
Good day, Chris. As I understand P mode in not a real P mode as on classical automatic and I really need to use a hand break?
Hi Chris we are after a vw same spec as a california ocean dsg 204 4motion but a long wheelbase can you advice us.?
It looks like they didn’t do an “S” mode on the 2022 204 4motion California ocean. There is manual mode but an S mode is good for hill descents.
Hi Chris. Thanks for your video’s! What do you advise when ascending or descending in the mountains: D or S, or even M?
I wouldn't use M. I'd probably stick it in D and switch to S if it's struggling at any point. Should be fine though! It's worth noting that newer models don't come with S (if you haven't purchased yet). Cheers!
@@CaliforniaChris Thanks for the info Chris
Cheers Chris!
👍
Great video Chris. I have seen some pictures of 6.1 Californias without an ‘S’ mode on the DSG - any idea why?
It would be interesting to know the year of the model / what country it's in.
@@CaliforniaChris i think it is one of the used vehicles on your forecourt...its Dec 2019, Ascot Grey up for £53,491. I found it on the used VW search on your website. The pic shows the selector level with just PRND +/-
Just got mine today and has no s mode 🤔
What spec did you go for Nicky?
@@unclemouch4426 hi Dave I got a t28 lwb 150 dsg
Is it possible to upgrade the material of the top tend of the Cali 5.1 with the new one of the 6.1?
I don't see any reason why not. We have upgraded the bellows from one model to another before. The sizes shouldn't be any different. If you contact your nearest dealership, they should be able to confirm that they're happy to do this for you.
@@CaliforniaChris do you have a rough idea of the price in your garage?
Hi Chris, can I ask you when my VW California Ocean is in for a service do they check the gas ect? Also why doesn’t it require a habitation certificate? Many thanks from Aberdeen...and thanks for all the videos they are great and so helpful 👍
Hi Jeanette, I'll cover this in a bit more detail in an upcoming Q&A video, but in answer to your questions: no, they won't check your gas lines etc when it's in for a service as it's not a fixed gas system. There's no habitation certificate as the California is actually a modification of another vehicle (the Transporter). Caravans, for example, are purpose-built for living in and therefore they need a habitation certificate. Keep an eye out for the Q&A video for more details. I hope that helps! Chris.
Thanks Chris. I remember (I think on your van) there is a flappy paddle option too. Guessing this just makes it easier for those manual shifts instead of moving the stick. Sony long term implications on the gearbox driving
in this way?
Hi, thanks for your comment. Not that I'm aware of!
Thanks Chris. I’m waiting for my new California Ocean T6.1 dsg and I’m studying your videos. I have a California beach 6 and I use an Calicap. Do you think I need also for the T6.1 or not?
Hi Paola, thanks for the comment. I'll cover this in a bit more detail in an upcoming Q&A video, but in short: it won't hurt if you can remove the Calicap and bring it over to the T6.1 model. While the bellows material is a lot better on the T6.1, if you're used to having the Calicap, then you'll probably see a benefit of having it on the T6.1. I hope that helps! Chris.
@@CaliforniaChris thanks
Thank you👍😁👋.

Probably a stupid question. Im used to driving an EV, (electric handbrake). When stopped at traffic lights for example, can i hold the van with the footbrake in 'D' mode, or do i need to use the handbrake and neutral gear?
I've never driven anything other than EV's.
Autobreaks ?
What a prehistoric gear box and no paddles! And still comes with a handbrake ! Very vintage ,
The camper vans are based on the Transporter panel vans, so they inherit the parts from those. Now that the new Caddy Panel Van has electric handbrake, smaller gear switcher, paddles on the steering wheel, I'd expect to see them in the next generation of VW campers.
