the male pectoral fins are thicker and pointed the rough white stars in the pectoral edges of male kois are called breeding stars it can be found on its checks too when its ready to spawn just like goldfish and also it is best to check if it has enough milt to ensure that it can fertilize the eggs of the female koi fish by applying gentle massage on its ventral area

yes in countries that have four seasons usually spring time they spawn since during spring there are plenty of foods and the water is bit warm most of the animals breed during spring time. but when you are in tropical countries they can breed whole year round you will just need to separate the female koi fish from the males and feed it lots and lots of live foods and prepared foods that are high in protein
