The time for voluptuous UK exotic gardens has gently phased from its seasonal best to a slightly tired reflection of or former glory. However it is a great time to ask 'What could we do better for next year? So in this video English horticulturist Simon tours the garden looking for season tasks - including what plants are needed for the latest gaps and which, if any, plants need to be moved to a more suitable position for next years display.
I have two new projects for this fall and I hope I'm successful ... I'm trying to overwinter an alocasia and ginger lily outdoors in my garden. My winters can be rather brutal with temps dropping down into low single digits F. Wish me luck! :) Next spring will be the great reveal as to whether my plants survived the cold.
Hello Alien, I think that if you can put down a thick enough mulch, you will have every chance. Maybe start with a layer of dry mulch topped with blended farm manure. You will probably need 4 to 6 inches, but to be honest, I haven't had to deal with conditions that cold, so you may need more. I am currently clearing my mums greenhouse that hasn’t been touched since 2019. So many dead plants and rubbish, one bulb packet was dated 2008!

Most likely passionfruit travelling roots rather than seedlings
Hi Jerome. I definitely have some seedlings as they are emerging with dicotaledons, but I think you might be right with the running roots as some of these new tendrils are growing too fast for a seeding to establish that quick. There must be a parent plant in next doors garden. Thanks for getting in touch. Simon
@walkingtalkinggardeners My passiflora caerulea travels at least 2 meters under compacted aggregates and then Scottish pebbles to pop up in another bed. Also surprisingly hardy. Survived 2012-13 at -8°c
It's amazingly that passionflowers can look so exotic yet prove to be so tough in our climate. Simon
