The "Dance in the Restaurant" in Act Three is special to me. I found that if I had a piece of music going through my head (that I didn't want there) the best way of dealing with that was to sing, or hum, to myself a stronger, more powerful, more sprightly piece. It would override and overcome the unwanted piece. "Dance in the Restaurant" fits the bill quite decently for me. Always liked Gliere, and this is just one more reason to!
the wikipedia article lists 66 movements, with 9 other movements added by gliere for a specific production. that is quite a difference from the number of movements in this recording.
I never realized that until now lol. Though this is as complete of the ballet that I was able to find. Most likely, the other other movements not included were either merged with another movement, or they were cut because they were very short segments meant for the ballet production.
The Wiki listing of movements appears to correspond with the 1929 Leningrad production (I have the piano score of this, and it includes the appendix items that Wiki lists.) I would hazard a guess that this recorded version represents the original Moscow Bolshoi production. Maybe... As with many ballets, the score seems to have been a happy hunting ground for cuts, additions and adaptations over the years. Great music in any version, of course. Glière is sadly underrated in my opinion, due to his continuing to write in the late romantic style and eschew most modernist trends. Hard to believe, listening, that this ballet was composed no less that 13 years AFTER 'The Rite of Spring'!
Gracias por difundiir este ballet, pues solo se difunde la Danza de los marineros rusos, ojalá alguien muestre el bailet para poder apreciarlo completamente Gliere es otro de los grandes músicos casi sin difusión, es una pena. Escribo desde Argentina
There was actually a movie adaption made in 1955, and it is up on youtube. I think if you search "The Red Poppy film ballet", it should be the first result.
Stupendo inserimento.
Grazie.
