The Waltz in this suite is a masterpiece of creation with a sublime melody, rich orchestration and sonorous harmonies. With it Gliere proves to be a very worthy successor to Tchaikovsky.
Ya te comentaba que la escuché dos veces seguidas y me enamoró, como suele pasar algunas veces. Me trajo tal cantidad de recuerdos de mi infancia, que paradójicamente creí haber olvidado y que me llevaron a viejos tiempos, viejas vivencias que se hicieron presentes en segundos. Yo nací en Monterrey, N.L. fui la segunda de tres hijos, de familias neolonesas de mucho tiempo atrás. Por el deseo de mis padres, siempre buscando una mejoría económica para la familia, salimos a Tamaulipas, a Puebla, Michoacán y Guerrero, donde permanecimos por nueve años, hasta que yo terminé la Secundaria, y dado que era una niña de bien, no podía irme al D.F. sola, como ya lo había hecho mi hermano, dos años mayor que yo. Y así venimos a dar a esta ciudad de los Palacios, entre mis lágrimas y oraciones para no llegar, porque siempre me he sentido más guerrerense que el pozole blanco, y estaba totalmente apegada a la religión católica, pues en Chilapa estaba el único Obispado, la única gran Catedral, el único Seminario, los mejores Colegios católicos, a donde llegaban a estudiar todos los que valían y brillaban en el Estado. En la época en que se procesaba la miel de caña, hacíamos largas caminatas para degustarla, y los campos lucían espléndidos llenos de amapolas, que cortábamos para llevar entre las manos mientras caminábamos, y para "chapetearnos" las mejillas y lucir un rubor más falso que una moneda de tres centavos, mientras cantábamos las canciones más ingenuas que recordabamos, llevando en mano cada quien una bolsa de papel de estrasa con bolillos que solíamos chopear en el cajetito de miel. Era una vida idílica, como tal la recuerdo, y hasta me salieron algunas lágrimas al revivir los campos de amapolas, viendo ese campo que apareció en mi pantalla, el que tú me enviaste con tan bella música, y de alguna manera quedó dentro de tanta flor una foto mía de hace unos diez años. Ojalá pueda mandartela, aunque soy poco hábil en cuestiones cibernéticas, porque además de grata, me pareció impresionante.
La gracia y la elegancia de esta composición, siento que reflejan las idiosincrasias de la vida y como uno puede reírse de las mismas, deambular alegremente por el trayecto hermoso e agridulce que es nuestra existencia.
The "Dance in the Restaurant" in Act Three is special to me. I found that if I had a piece of music going through my head (that I didn't want there) the best way of dealing with that was to sing, or hum, to myself a stronger, more powerful, more sprightly piece. It would override and overcome the unwanted piece. "Dance in the Restaurant" fits the bill quite decently for me. Always liked Gliere, and this is just one more reason to! It's not contained in this suite, but if anyone else feels the need to override unwanted, garbage music, I suggest picking a favorite tune of your own and use it to tell the interloper to "Talk to the hand!"

I heard of "The Red Poppy" years ago. I have no recollection of ever having listened to it. Now I have.
