In 1973 I saw ZZ Top in Hawaii. They were the leadoff band for the Rolling Stones. When they came on stage, Dusty Hill said later, "you could hear a pin drop". And, he was right, nobody knew who they were, and didn't know what to expect. Dusty and Billy had their cowboy hats on and a lot of people thought it was some country western band. They did 3 concerts in 2 days, and at every one of them, mine included, the crowds all screamed for an encore, and they did not disappoint. They blew everyone away, (and were by far much better than the Stones' performance), and I've never forgotten that night.
Lucky you! My first ZZ show was during the Expect No Quarter tour in Baton Rouge. It was December 1980 by the time they got there. Unforgettable.
In all fairness, the stones were not very good live in my opinion. After about 2 songs, you get kinda tired of jagger slithering across the stage. They always sounded out of tune and could never cover their own songs very well. Having said that, I love the rolling stones early albums.
@@larryrowe5259 I agree. When they came out for their set, they had a couple of bottles of Jack Daniels sitting on their amps and would take a slug now and then, plus, they were out of tune and sounded pretty bad. But, at least I can say I was there.
At the Blaisdell?
@@TheChadTI You got it, the Neil Blaisdell Center was the venue. In fact, here's a video of Billie & Dusty describing their concerts in Hawaii in 1973 when I saw them: ua-cam.com/video/w007BB0jb9A/v-deo.html
Grew up in Houston back when ZZ Top was just breaking. The house they would practice and jamb at was right beside some apartments where a friend lived. You could hear and see them playing from the second floor balcony of the apartment. Good times hanging out, drinking Lone Star beer, and listening to live ZZ for free. Was lucky enough to meet Dusty one time, was a super cool laid back guy. He was making a beer run at the 7-11 across the street, even bought me a six pack. Never been a point in my life where cranking up some ZZ top didn't take me back, and make me smile.
I can't believe I have talked to people that have never heard of this band.
They are a new band right hahaha
R u serious. How have people not heard of this band??? That’s nuts
You are officially old. Welcome to our club. Beers are in the cooler over there.
Doesn’t seem possible

Cool! I've been listening to all the post!Recycler records a lot lately and they are very, very good! Billy is smokin'! And his guitar is just filthy!
Rest in peace Dusty🙏🏻💗💗Love you ZZTOP❤️❤️
When I was 10 years old I heard Can't Stop Rockin' in a movie and it blows my mind, I rewound this excerpt of the movie 40 times a day, and a few days later, when my mom got tired of it, she said "go to your dad, he has this album on the reel and listen there". Since then ZZ Top has been my favorite band.
Dusty's vocal on that track is insane what an introduction you had !!!
Ninja turtles 2 or 3
ZZ Top my beginnings in rock n roll
I grew up with ZZ Top too. My heart will follow this band forever
Billy Gibbons created a style of singing that is timeless, because the older he gets, and the rougher his voice gets, the more it fits the style.
This is gonna be Lowdown in the Street!
I see what you did there...

Grew up in Houston, and I'm sorry to say I never saw them peform. I saw Billy Gibbons lots of times, though, because he was a regular shopper at the Sound Warehouse record store, where I worked. Everyone knew not to bother him. We just smiled, when he arrived, and let him go about his business,
Love me some Z.Z. Top 💕🤘
one of the Best in our Universe
20. April 1980, deep in the night I sat in front of my TV watching Rockpalast. I waited for ZZ Top, we didnt have many information here in germany about this band. Then I saw the long beards, black preacher-clothes and their unique moves. What a surprise, haha. The rest is history.
I grew up with ZZTop!!! I absolutely listen to them every day!! Their Music Never Grows Old! Much love from Ontario Canada 🇨🇦😎💕

I've had the pleasure of seeing them 3 times.
Rock it ZZ Top ❤️ Your exemplary music will be remembered forever.
1981 I was at college in London and they were playing Hammersmith Odeon. I had never heard of them, but my mate said "you'll like them"! Boy was he right. Next day I went out and bought El Loco - it was just before Eliminator and the famous videos came out. Been a huge fan ever since.

The Dust was around. Thank you, ZZTOP
Saw them before popular w/group named Poco, in Laredo Texas...outdoor concert 1971...what a time that was!!! 67 yrs old now... still love 'em!
Vets,TX
Poco was a decent band too. Started by Jim Messina and the other guitar player from Buffalo Springfield after they broke up. I think Tim Schmidt, also of The Eagles was in it at one time, too.
@@johnpearson4899 How cool you remember all that... Did you see Poco, or researched them? Asking cuz if you know...then are you in late 60's (like me) or fan- and young? If young-awesome! ~Vet TX
@@soldierznvetz3248 I'm mid 50s. Born in the 60s. Poco was on the radio a lot when I was growing up. I've been interested in music all of my life. I spent a lot of time in my mom's record collection. Everything from "Kookie, Kookie, lend me your comb" to "Steppenwolf Live". I just like music and music history.
@@johnpearson4899 Awesome! Blessings to you and your family!
@@soldierznvetz3248 Thanks. Same to you and yours.
And to this day we're still listening 🤘🏽💥

I can’t imagine what it was like for them to lose Dusty.
Met them at a record signing at tower records, nyc. gave them afew abums and were gracious to sign all of the. great guys. aw them at MSG a few nights later and blew me away, first time seeing them. what a night.
Oh yes. I thought to myself while watching the document when first came out that the playing segments should be released separately and also wondered why they didn't (untill now) felt like such a waste at the time. And now finally! Damn they sound good, and man I miss Dusty
