Fantastic, great to see Perry back. If you are interested in more stylistic and influential silent films I highly recommend Man with a Movie camera, The Phantom Carriage, The Wind and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. All Masterpieces that I discovered this year.
I’ve heard of man with a movie camera and the phantom for such a long time and still haven’t checked them out. I gotta really get on that. Dr. Caligari is masterful 💯
Great video as always! This makes me want to buy more Criterions even though I have bought nearly 20 during this sale 😂😂😂 Also super psyched to see Perry back in this video! His presence and the way he expresses his film opinions are the highlights of these videos! I have missed you guys so much but I should be able join video chats again starting next weekend!
I discovered a small "old school" DVD shop in my city and I got into the habit of going there every now and then (I had also sent them my resume, but unfortunately with the crisis in the sector they didn't hire staff, sigh). The owner, always present at the counter, is an old school cinephile, who gets to chatting to people who come in about movies they want to catch or even just about cinema in general. And in there it is really full of movies of all genres (even unknown things that you would never find in a normal shop in the mall), so much so that every time I leave it I always end up with completely different titles (last time I took the Three Colors Trilogy by Kieslowski, The Hateful Eight, Divorce Italian Style and Bande a part, six films completely different in terms of cinematographic current and historical period). The experience of buying home video in the shop talking about cinema with other enthusiasts is unfortunately disappearing given the presence of twenty thousand streaming services, but I believe that for a cinephile there is nothing more beautiful.
I couldn’t agree more. The experience you described is one of the main reasons why physical media is so special. I think it allows for a more intimate connection with the art form and makes the overall experience much more rewarding. Unlimited accessibility I think is kind of robbing viewers of that connection.
@@TheMisfitPond Very true, it's much more "intimate": every dvd or blue ray I own a copy of (even the worst things, like the Batman v Superman dvd they gave me years ago for my birthday) has behind it a moment in which the 'I bought, a story behind the purchase and in general it is part of my journey as a cinephile. And having my own copy, especially with my favorite movies, makes it all the more special, like it's something that's only mine. Watching it in streaming, where there's just a cover and some data that I can watch once and then leave there in the bin, is not the same at all.
And even more coincidentally John Frankenheimer’s “The Manchurian Candidate”, “Seven Days in May” and “Seconds” are also unofficially called the paranoia trilogy!
When Perry picks up the Disturbed cd, look what's underneath....the new Nickelback. They both put out albums on the same day. Like a butt rock holiday.
I love Criterion Blow Up edition as it is beautiful packaging and the film is very well done by Antonioni in color in London. Brian de Palma is a film maker that I love sometimes but also hate! I haven’t seen Blow Out yet and as I have hear very good comments I decided to order 4K Criterion edition.
Nice choices with Valerie and Her Week of Wonders, Daddy Long Legs, Sweet Smell of Success and always anything by John Waters. The DVD of Carnival of Souls is worth getting for both cuts btw. Looking forward to getting Boat People soon as well as Flowers of Shanghai.
Btw since you mentioned EO in the video. Just wanted to let you know how Janus Films owns the rights to the film, so I would be not surprised to see it get a criterion release sometime in 2023.
Nice to see some True Stories love. I watched that movie after an an anxiety inducing day and it was so amazing. Obviosuly its not the best Talking Heads music but man is it fun and john goodmans really good and that fashion show scene ggod that movie rocks. Good shit.
Smithereens is excellent....it is about the punk culture, but it is more of a story of one girl's survival living a rough life on the streets. Very powerful film. I recommend it. Also, Daddy Longlegs is an excellent film and a very easy blind buy.
When the world needed them most they returned
Perry = LEGEND
I think the packaging for Marriage Story is maybe second to Dr. Strangelove for my favorite Criterion blu-ray unexpected extras.
PERRYS BACK
It's awesome to see Perry return for a haul.
Yes! Yes!!! YES!!!!!! Perry is the man. Down by Law is my absolute favorite Jarmusch film. Definitely a must watch.
👽 I could listen to Perry's jibberjabber all day long! Thanks, MP, for another wild trip.🛸
PERRRRY THE GOAT IS BACK. COME BACK FOR EVERY VIDEO!!!
Favorite Spike Lee movie is Summer of Sam. Do the Right Thing a close second. Good review guys.
Malcolm X then 25th Hour for me

It’s not a haul without Perry. So awesome to have him back! Cheers. Happy Holidays

The Criterion haul videos haven’t been the same without Perry. I’m glad to see him back.

Ordet and Day of Wrath, both Amazing.

Great to see you two back in action together!
Bronco Henry will haunt you until you get The Power of the Dog.
Perry! 🥹
The Fly: *exists*
Perry: *I liked Crash better*
Fists in the Pocket is one of the great Italian films. I’ve had it on DVD for years, haven’t upgraded yet.
Coincidentally Alan J Pakula's three films -
Klute, The Parallax View & All the President's Men
are also called the paranoia trilogy.
And even more coincidentally John Frankenheimer’s “The Manchurian Candidate”, “Seven Days in May” and “Seconds” are also unofficially called the paranoia trilogy!
Glad to see you two are both friends still. I'm guessing Perry just moved away is all, hence his absence from the haul videos.
The New World is the only Malick movie I saw in theaters and was one of my first criterions!
One of my all time favorites!
When Perry picks up the Disturbed cd, look what's underneath....the new Nickelback.
They both put out albums on the same day.
Like a butt rock holiday.
i own Smithereens. excellent film. great snapshot of NYC during its apocalyptic era in late 70s/early 80s.
Love the description of True Stories. Ive always seen it, and now want to get it.
I completely agree about Mr Klein. Check out The Servant though, easily Joseph Losey's best film.
Just added it to my Watchlist. Thx
@@jesusperez7108 No worries. 👍

I just wish Blow Out came in similar packaging. My OCD doesn't understand why criterion's so hit or miss about using digipacks
Great video man.

Forgot to ask. Speaking of Jarmusch does Perry like Mystery Train?
Fail Safe is outstanding. I have seen it recently.
Yes! Serial mom! I really really hope the waters criterion reign isn’t over!
Anyone know if you can join that discord server and if so how
If you like After Life, get Still Walking, it’s even better. He reminds me of Ozu a bit.
This vid made my week! Will there be a 2023 Kino Lord Challenge on Letterboxd?
I already posted it.
@@jesusperez7108 awesome! I’ll def be participating again
The Boys are Back in Town

Dreyer……Ordet is amazing as is Gertrud. Ordet is one of my favorites.

YAASSSSSSSS
Your next Lumet films should be Serpico and Network.
And The Verdict.
Ohhh I have seen Network actually! I keep forgetting that’s Lumet. Awesome movie
If you likeLynne Ramsey, you have to see Morvern Callar if you haven’t already.
Kino’s release of In the Heat of the Night is better than Criterion’s, it’s a great 4K and it comes with the sequel.
Some Like It Hot may be the new Blue Velvet lol 😂
Dose Perry have a Letterboxd?
cinemasavant is my Letterboxd name.
❤️❤️
Boat people! Lesgooooooo!
Life is Sweet is absolutely delightful. I think Mike Leigh's Naked is better than Secret and Lies.
🎞🎞🎞Gottcha beat sir...I have over 500 as of now!📽📽📽
Still waiting to see u pick up In a Lonely Place...
Carlos has an aversion to getting Lynched.
DONKEY!!!
Yes watch au hasard Balthazar
Crash sucks
THANK YOU!
I don’t understand why you guys love Power of the dog
I think it’s the most boring movie I ever saw, I hate it, such a waste of my time
