  • Sure, our camp got snowed on overnight. And sure, the snow got deeper still as we drove to even higher elevations. Can we reach our destination? Who will need to get winched out?
    Come along as I join @primal_outdoors, @edward_shin_, @recon_overland, and @adventurecentric as we camp in Oregon's Cascade Mountain Range in the depths of winter, then push our luck trying to access one of the remote high lakes nearby.

    Wow, this was one of the best youtube videos I have ever seen--I felt like I was right along for the ride. Thanks so much for the time and effort in filming it and glad everyone had such a great time. So nice to see the dogs having fun in the snow. I had 2 goldens and a yellow lab, and I used to take them on summer/winter adventures in mountains of Eastern Arizona--it was their nirvana, and I still smile when I see the pictures or just think about all the fun we had. Fantastic job!!

    My wife and I have owned 18 Subaru wagons starting with a 1981 1.6 liter . I have driven them all over the country in ALL weather..sleeping in my "metal tent" to -28F in the Adirondacks. They WERE incredible and I have MANY crazy stories. Our last was a pair of 2003 Foresters ... in 05 or 06 Fuji Heavy Ind. sold Subaru to Toyota. I have no idea how good the newer ones are...but its a HELL of a legacy (no pun intended) .

  • @MrRichieCZ
    @MrRichieCZ 4 роки тому +1

    That was pretty cool video once again. I like to watch your stories as you know. And what I really like is snow digging with a car. Maybe you can try to go as a first vehicle to go further it to mountains.
    Subaru has two big advantages - 1) independent suspension, so you have better ground clearance that it looks like in snow because if you hit the "belly" as we say, you suspension can flex litle and get some grip. Thats something you dont have with axle suspension.
    And 2) is the weight of a car. As I wrote before I had a Pajero (Montero or Shogun) and on the same snow I have more trouble with it that with Subaru Legacy. Mitsubishi was still digging and doing really hard work to get there. Subaru was just flying over.
    And finnaly I'm really glad that your channel is going bigger and grows. Your video is definitely worth it!

    On those smaller branches save your chainsaw battery by using a small hatchet or a machete. I keep an Ontario SP58 in my kit for that purpose and often to process the wood into smaller slivers or pieces for feathering. Wood processing is a lot of work but so gratifying after your fire starts burning. Your photography skills are incredible as you captured the reality of traversing in snow and the problems it can present.

    I actually like that you discuss airing down so much, its free and it makes big gains in multiple places. Comfort and traction. Would like to hear what pressures you actually drop down to in certain situations, you didn't seem to mention how low you go. I've dropped as low as 18 or 20psi if the road was so covered you couldn't see it. that was using studded winter tires going over passes on road trips before.
    rally/ gravel tires will go down to 10-15psi no problem ,thanks to the crazy think sidewalls, but they do debead that low when you start making silly mistakes and driving too aggressive.

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, I try to remember to mention what I'm airing down to but I did neglect to provide that detail. I don't remember but I think I was probably around 23 psi as I knew I would be doing a mix of some "higher speed" highway driving (well, ~35 mph on the packed snow/ice) plus some tame trails. I'd normally go right down to 15-18 psi just on a snowy trail at lower speeds. I've been taking them down to 12 on sand. Usually around 23-25 on basic gravel/forest service roads, and 18 on more challenging "off road" terrain.
      Thanks, BTW, for appreciating the air-down. I've had SO many people poo-poo my habit of airing down, but man...it's so helpful.

  • @seabiscuit726142
    @seabiscuit726142 4 роки тому

    You have to be careful not to air down the tires too much in cold temperatures. The air molecules inside the tires will contract and the pressure might drop even more. You might end up with too little pressure which is not desirable.

      Thanks for coming over from Primal Outdoors! Jason and I actually just met up again the other day. He'll probably have a video of it out soon, I'm backlogged several weeks at this point. :-)

    That forester is better in the snow than you think it is. I have a 5 speed one on stock winters and I've driven it places it really had no business going

    Correction, truck tire chains do not tear up roads in western states where there are chain law requirements. Western states mix asphalt with other hard aggregates that won't tear up when trucks have snow chains. Trucks cannot air down as it is illegal and unsafe for public roads. Per laws governed by FMCSA.

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  3 роки тому

      I was talking about the icy snowpack on the road getting torn up, not the road itself. The truck chains can create a bumpy surface *in the icy packed snow* which feels similar to a washboard gravel road, so it’s nice to soften that rough ride. That comment was in no way intended to be critical of trucks running chains...believe me, I WANT the trucks I’m sharing the road with to be chained up. 🙂 Of course a trucker would not air down. That’s a whole different ball game from what I’m doing. 🙂

    Great video! Thanks for sharing! One suggestion, please turn up the audio when you are talking in the car, it’s too low and not leveled with the rest of video.

      I'm genuinely sorry about that, I know the in-car audio was particularly bad this time. I'm working on some possible solutions for this. The in-car audio was actually turned waaaay up in the edit, but there's just so much road noise as well that it makes it harder to hear & understand me. I need to make this a priority because I spend time fighting with this on every video I edit. Thanks for slogging through nonetheless. I'll be working on getting that dialed in. :-)

      softroadingthewest thanks! I only mentioned it because the video quality and editing was amazing and this last little piece would really make your videos perfection.

    Get an MSR rocket stove to heat up water. That butane stove probably took forever to heat that water up. Forever.
    I need a camp stove (as I recently learned) to cook, but a camping micro rocket or pocket rocket stove is phenomenal for heating up water fast.
    You will need a different fuel can (for $10).
    But it is worth it.

      Actually that little butane stove brings my little kettle to a boil remarkably quickly. As long as it's not too too cold out. When it drops too far below 30° it slows way down.
      I'm in the process of making some changes to my kitchen though. Sneak peek video should be out this weekend!

    I do like that the subaru is capable but that f250 weighs twice as much as that little car so yes its going to get stuck faster. Had it been the lead vehicle breaking snow i bet it would have ran into similiar issues as the others. Still cool they were out but geez that looks super cold!!

      Haha, I'm getting hammered in the comments on that point. :-) My bad...I always have glasses in the car and in the moment, almost always forget to use them. But I know I need to set a better example. I think I will somehow attach a dedicated pair to the chainsaw so I can't overlook them each time I use it. Thanks for watching!

      I leave the glasses with my gloves in a pouch near my fire kit. Glasses on, gloves on THEN grab the saw/axe is my mantra. 🤙🏼

      My friend and fellow Subaru UA-camr @bruceyyyyy did a All-Terrain vs Winter Tire comparison video about a year ago. It was more of an on-road scenario however than driving through deep fresh snow on a trail:
      ua-cam.com/video/DWGLMqUSm0U/v-deo.html
      It's difficult to do a true comparison unless you have two identical vehicles - and can put them through the exact same conditions (i.e. in my video here, Jason's truck in front was plowing through deep untouched snow while the rest of us simply drove in his tracks). My three-peak snow rated all-terrain tires are fantastic when driving through fresh snow, very grippy and confidence-inspiring, but they are less impressive on snow that is packed down hard like highways and city streets - I imagine true winter tires would handle those conditions better.

    • @softroadingthewest

      If I had to get something other than an SH Forester, I'd probably look at the first-gen (SF) Foresters. I loved them from the moment Subaru came out with them, plus you can find them with low range transfer cases.
