I too love this symphony. I first heard it in 1968-ish when I was working in the CSSR.
I immediately went out and bought Supraphon records of other symphonies and several piano converti. Shame that more of his work isn't included in PROMS programmes.

An exhilerating, glistening performance of a great symphony. Bělohlávek did such a wonderful job of promoting Martinu's often thrilling music. He will be missed.

Can't say, however, that the chocolate box photo adds much to the experience...

This is a most wonderful recording of the most Monumental of Martinu's Symphonies. I would also recommend listening to the Neeme Järvi recording with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra also utterly beautiful. I adore Martinu and its a travesty that his music is rarely heard in the UK. Probably one of the greatest composers of the 20th centuary so cruelly airbrushed out of the musical cannon by a bunch of sycophantic Muppet's what a tragedy. Martinu's music should be compulsory listening this is awesome thank you for posting a wonderful recording. It's interesting to hear the different nuances Jirí Bělohlávek & the LPO bring out in this recording thank you so much for posting this.

I completely agree with you about the way Martinu is largely ignored not only in the U.K. but the U.S. as well. When Belohlavek was chief conductor of the BBC S.O. he made amends for this but his efforts do not seem to have resulted in overall more performances. Instead we get endless repeats of Mahler, Bruckner etc to the point of tedium. Y.T. is a wonderful source of discovery for much unjustifiably ignored first class music, especially from 20th c composers.

At the risk of a hail of flak (deep breath): Bruckner is a bore. Martinů is much more appealing (and Bax, and Rubbra...)

For starters, check the lovely, sensitive, nuanced string playing (10:03 through 10:44) in the Scherzo's trio section; who has ever taken the time to play it with such beauty and insight? LR

Perfect symphony to read the subjective forms of the clouds and to follow with a tender eye the grooves of the stems of the trees; appreciate the complex writing of the nested branches, taste the colors of the decomposition of light into water droplets in a garden, and strongly feel the wet soil of ancestral forest to perceive the traces of animals from deep past.

I heard this symphony once in Zürich, back in the 1980ies, it was GREAT, I love it! also Martinu's TOCCATA E DUE CANZONI and many other works!

A rather dense orchestration with ligter sections, all in the typical style of Martinu which keeps very original but firm links with tonality. A mature symphony.

This is a marvelous performance--thank you for posting it! Who is the conductor, and when was it performed? The Vaclav Neumann set of recordings is also wonderful, as is the Järvi set. But this performance is absolutely spectacular. The third movement is for me one of the most moving symphonic movements of the century, and the last movement one of the most thrilling.

Doesn't quite reach this level, but I would also recommend the NAXOS release of Arthur Fagen conducting the Ukrainian National Symphony Orchestra.
