The style of Martinu is generally not made of large melodies, but rather of cells which articulate to each other. His compatroit Janacek had more or less a similar technique, but used it quite differently. This gives to his style an unique fluidity. We find this here, but by exception we have a long melody in the cello a few minutes after the start, which gives its flavour to the concerto. A long malody in the cello appears also close to the end. The orchestra is vivid also. In some places, the trumpet takes the lead. This also is common in Martinu's orchestral music.

This concerto is in D Major.
This concerto is quite typical of Martinu's writing Te he harmiony and melodies are always perfectly tonal, but not academic. Thre tone is often somehow acid, somtimes introverted, these moods evolve quicl ly and most of the time rather sharply.
LOL, the opening of first movement sounds a great deal similar to an American Hoe-Down ala Aaron Copland -- which has become synonymous with 'open country, American western states.' Czech cowboy heards cattle, rolls cigarette one handed while on horse :-) It just demonstrates that already by 1930, a bit of 'international style' re harmonic trends was already happening.
I've always thought the opening of the first movement (which I love), feels like Texas -- boasting of their longhorns, etc.

I love this. But I'm thinking maybe it would be nice if the cello were a bit louder. I know that's a problem with cello concertos. The orchestra can drown the cello out. If the cello in this recording had its own mic, they could perhaps have upped its volume a bit more when doing the mix? But if I'm being naive & ignorant, let me know.
If you want to hear a cello concerto with the cello miked up and in the front of the mix, try Alicia Weilerstein's recording of the Dvorak cello concerto with the Czech Philharmonic conducted by Jiri Belohlavek. I think it's a great performance, but the recording doesn't sound natural to me. I don't expect a cello or violin soloist to match a symphony orchestra in volume.
