Smaller square - 4 rows of overturned wagons - 4 lines of soldiers - longer field of fire (no small plateau top) - Machine gun and/or Gatling Gun - Cannon - Cavalry that harasses enemy flank (flanks only) and whirls away and doesn't hang about waiting to get unhorsed - Last ditch plan to fall back to smaller squares in the center if necessary - this 'might' work better.....
I did indeed. Thanks... though it might be a while before I can get the total war game in the first place. Though, eventually Im sure Ill be back asking how to set up the mod and what not.
John Marshall Yeah it's great, in the mod they actually have the music from the movies also - but I couldn't have it on or UA-cam would mute my video for Copyright :/
Very cool to see...sorry you weren't able to hold, but no lack of effort. Takes me back to a game of regular Empire I was playing. I had the Dutch faction expanding in the Caribbean defeating most of the other powers of the coast of South America. My main force is attacked on one of the islands by a force from....India? Sure enough all kinds of warriors from that region including elephants. I fields a combined force of Dutch and Native American reserves, and they did well. The cavalry squares held up to the large foreign beasts and the Native troops fought well against the other Indians. With all it's flaws I still have fun with the game.
+James Smith Sorry for the very late reply, the new UA-cam system only notifies me of new comments every three months :O That sounds fun and crazy, I always loved Empire TW the most, so many crazy experiences with my soldiers far away from home. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Yes I 100% agree, I will try my best but for various reasons, doing anything is harder than i ought to be right now :) Thanks for the support, stay tuned!
I think their rate of fire is still based on Napoleonic firing rates. I mean the Martini Henry was breech loading and you could get a near continuous rate of fire when shooting in rank formations....
+mujin70 Well in the mod a two-rank formation fires a volley about every four seconds, so that is much quicker than the Napoleonic firing rates during which it would take 30 seconds per volley. Also 5 seconds per volley is also quicker than would be historically accurate, to conserve ammo and keep everything disciplined, a volley would be fired about every fifteen seconds... so 4 per minute.
Ahh yeah - what you need to do is change the unit multiplier in the Total War scripts. It's a useful tool for all TW games you can make them as big or small as possible. If you're not sure how I can make a tutorial video :P But there's probably ones already out there. Holla if you need help.
+Leonardo Mendez This is a good read to explain the begining, and first half of the war. :) Thanks for the view, and comment. www.britishempire.co.uk/forces/armycampaigns/africancampaigns/zuluwar/zuluwar.htm
I have a few questions. How did he get the units to be that big? How did he get barricades on the maps? And finally, how did he get the graphics to look good. I have the mod, but the unit sizes are only eighty men.
MeowingWhale You can always ask me these things directly, I always try to respond to comments on my videos. So to increase the Unit Size I changed the Unit Multiplier in the Scripts, essentially allowing me to have any unit as big or small as I want, depending on what I want to play, this can be done on all Total Wars. Secondly the British line Infantry units can deploy barricades before the battle starts, they are textured to look like overturned wagons like in the movie; Zulu - which inspired the mod. Thirdly the graphics were on medium/high settings to allow me to record with 'Fraps' and get a decent FPS. However, with my new external recording device I can record on maximum settings without an fps drop. Hope that helps, any more questions you may have - I will be happy to tell you what I know, or try to find out for you. Thanks for your comment :)
Thanks for that, but do you know any good tutorials or sites that can guide me through the unit multiplier process? Also, your channel is great, so keep up the good work!
MeowingWhale No problems, it's really not very difficult - I can make/upload a video of it tomorrow if you'd like? And thank you very much, I've been quite lazy with it if I'm honest. These are the kind of comments that make me want to do it more though :)
I think I found out how. Is it in preferences.script campaign multiplier? If so, then I did find it. Also, you replied a lot faster than I thought you would :)
Well I'm not sure how he intends to answer them with that Impi spear in his rib cage ;) But if he does I'm sure he will tell you that when you're surrounded, elevation is an asset.
I think if the square formation was a lot more compact and tighter, there would not have been so many British casualties. Those little gaps between the ranks meant a lot, and the Zulus can easily break the flanks.
The game is Napoleon Total War, available on steam here: store.steampowered.com/app/34030 The mod is the Khartoum Mod, available here: www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?403556-DOWNLOAD-FILES!!!Last-version-khartum-zulu-mod-1-0-Rorke-s-drift Hope that helps :)
Dou Bou Thanks man, there's another on my channel if you like it. I'm probably going to make more soon - Sub if you don't want to miss them, or I can just reply to this comment if/when they come out if you'd prefer :)
Here's a question, why are people so interested on the Anglo-Zulu war conflict? I mean to be honest there many Incidents of this during the The scramble for Africa, what makes this one so popular?
citylightsish I can theorise a few ideas. I think living in today's post-imperial world, many people are really curious about how Europeans dominated the planet. Most people imagine European domination as white, gun-wielding people gunning down black spear-wielding people. The Zulu Wars fill that fantasy quite well, wouldn't you agree? Personally I am patriotic and love the military and the evolution of weaponry and warfare. The Anglo-Zulu War came right at the end of the Red-Coat Line Infantry/single-shot rifle era, so I find it really interesting and cool to see the British heroism against the overwhelming odds that I saw in "Zulu" as a child.
Lazy Chan WELL, interestingly the Zulus weren't a collective group of complete raiders looking for plunders, all orders from Cetshweyo were that the Zulus would not cross the river into natal and would not kill civilians. Zulus only killed those in British Redcoats, even soldiers in Black Artillery uniforms were often spared because the Zulus thought they were civilians or journalists. The British soldiers didn't want to hold Rorke's Drift, only Lieutenant Chard did. Don't ghee me wrong, they fought amazingly and won a glorious victory - but it was nowhere near as romantic as you're making out. Calm down.
Lazy Chan also lets not forget that we were invading their country with no motive other than for our own benefit - considering the quite extraordinary list of atrocities committed be the british empire I think you no ground whatsoever to describe other people as evil, even if the Zulu nation was highly militaristic - also use of the word 'savages' is extremely racist so you may want to rethink using it
The Europeans at this time were using Breech-loading rifles in which a bullet is insert into the back of the barrel. There were level-action rifles being produce at the same time. The level-action rifles could hold more ammo but it was difficult to use in certain combat situation. In other words, it is kind of a hassle to pull the level up and down while laying down on the ground to avoid enemy fire.
Try to make more squares squads like 3 or 4 and make sure they are aligned so they don't fire on the other squares. That was a tactic develop by Napoleon.
In all honesty this wasn't my attempt at any kind of tactical defense, I was surrounded and had to ensure I was equally defended on all sides and just had to let my boys do what they do best ;) Thank you for the advice, is there any type of video you would like to see me do in the future?
ArcticTemper if I was in that position and I play napoleon total war a lot and the empire version and I saw a line had broken, I would of ordered all of my men into squares for better defence so they don't get attacked from the rear and had my general protected better, but good video though :)
jesse bartlett Yeah to be honest I wasn't trying to win as much I was just trying to make a cool video. Plus trying to "300 spartan Style" against Zulus is really fun :) haha and cool I will check them out sometime :)
No not at all. Due to the technological differences it's much more fun to be outnumbered as the British. The odds can easily be overcome. Though 1v1 it goes down to the morale of the Zulus, which to be historically accurate must be unbreakable. SO it makes it a difficult balance. But I find people prefer the Zulus to win ;) hahaha
ArcticTemper Unlike the battle at Rorke's Drift,Britishers did not make full use of their equipments.(Rifles,Cannons and cavalry).Maybe they could make some тача́нка(Equipped it with a Gatling MG)
Xinrui Xu Well there are Gatling guns on the mod, and yes as you can see in the current war in Afghanistan. It is often hard to fight an enemy on their turf when they know it so well, and have local support from a lot of people. It was similar in the Zulu War, most of the battles were surprise attacks so the British were often not dug in or prepared for battle. Except for the battle of Uhlandi (how ever you spell that) the final battle. Which ended the war and brought British Victory.
ArcticTemper Actually the British had formed a hexagonal laager and other defenses such as a palisade and a stone redoubt at Kambula. There was a trench used at Gingindlovu. Rorke's drift was of course a fortified position. Only Isandlwana, Intombe River, and Hlobane Mt come to mind as surprise attacks against unfortified positions. And of those, Intombe was merely a supply column caught crossing a stream, and Hlobane was a raid where the Zulu impis coincidentally came along before they could withdraw. Isandlwana was a situation where they ignored standing orders to at least laager all camps. Chelmsford himself ignored his own order! Even minimally competent leadership at the camp would have resulted in a close-run but still likely British repulse of the Zulus. Instead, they sent 3 companies over a mile out from camp to skirmish, ignored reports of Zulu movements from as early as 9:30am (camp fell at 1:30), and over and over dispersed their force.
What's with all the coughing at the beginning? The Zulus have TB or ebola or something? One thing's for sure, they don't rout like other infantry units do.

A mod that changes Napoleon Total war into the Victorian Era by changing the weapons. Although only for the UK. Adding the Zulu Kingdoms from the Anglo-Zulu and Mahdist rebels front he Anglo-Sudan war. And also adding a campaign for Vanilla NTW where you can play as the pirate faction. and an Anglo-Sudan campaign also, set in Egypt.
I do, but the settings were all lowered to allow decent FPS when recording. My next vids will look even better :) And I'm sorry? I don't understand what the rest of that sentence means :P
Spartans are recognized as the best trained warriors in the ancient time. They fight in phalanxes and are almost undefeatable unless they get flanked. I think they would form a circle phalanx in this situation. But fighting against enemies in 1:8 is also too tough.
JungJung wONG Believe me, they were that good. 300 Spartans and 700 Thespians against the hole Persian empire and still kicked their buts for about 2-3 days
salemenos demonas It was actually around 2000 of the greeks that assissted the Spartans and it is true that they were very well trained BUT it is not true they were the best trained warriors in the ancient time as JungJung wONG said, The best trained army in the ancient times was the Roman army.... duh!
+Gaius Julius Caesar Lol you're as thick as a brick shithouse, of course he didn't earn the medal himself, it was likely passed down or bought or given to him by someone who collected it at some point.
I Think the British Have Really Brave Minds , because in Zulu War ... The British Were OutNumbered By The Zulu , But The British Still Stand ... They so brave :) GOD SAVE THE QUEEN .... ( Watch This Video while listening to British National Anthem , I Done That ... And it Awesome )
lazar drekic well, it is based on a true story. And there were survivors, but only because the Zulu recognized those few british soldiers who managed to stay alive were honorable warriors.
the zulu were the courageous ones. They put their breast to the fire and lead with nothing but wooden shields and spears. They charged headlong into bold action rifle barrages and cannonades. That is bravery.
Love the British square! Looks like Ulundi, except for the Gatling guns, Canons and Lancers. Cheers for uploading! :-)
Geraint Lewis
Didn't function as well as Ulundi though :P
Glad you liked it.
Geraint Lewis I got a medal to a soldier who fought at Kambula, one at gingindlovu and one at Ulundi
hold the square! 5 seconds later: what square
Paha xD Yes, the Zulus made quick work of it by attacking the corners, I guess that is why a Circular or Hexagonal formation was more popular...
Zulus Sah. Thousands of 'em.
A lot of the soliders at R's Drift had to have their shoulders popped back in the place from the repeated recoil of the MH Rifle. Crazy balls.
Just stayed up all night watching the first zulu movie. Then came here. I hope to get the total war game to add this mod on.
Teal'c I trust you enjoyed it :) If you need any help then just let me know!
I did indeed. Thanks... though it might be a while before I can get the total war game in the first place. Though, eventually Im sure Ill be back asking how to set up the mod and what not.
Teal'c Well best of luck to you sir, when the time comes you'll know where to ask :)
Indeed :)
Tell me a Jaffa joke ;)
that is the most badass shield i've ever seen in my life
Do more of this please!:)
Great vid and good quality battle scene more Zulu vids!
Yeah hopefully :) If I can fix the mod :/ hahahaha
Love the fact that they used sound bytes from the movie in a couple of places. Really a great touch. Gonna go listen to "Men of Harlech" now.
John Marshall Yeah it's great, in the mod they actually have the music from the movies also - but I couldn't have it on or UA-cam would mute my video for Copyright :/
Really? I've never seen anyone have trouble with that song, at least. Or any of the other versions.
John Marshall Yep, it's on there and when I record it, flagged immediately. It's annoying.

i played the khartoum mod sometime ago, gutted it would always crash, is this an improved version ????
Nope, sorry. Same version it's always been :S
It's been quite some time since I've watched this video

lucky for pizarro he had smallpox. Else this would be the outcome lol
Thanks for sharing, but that was very clumsily fought on both parts. Attacking in detail, no reserves inside the square, ignoring breaththroughs, etc.

cool and thanks
Does it mean whatever way the British choose they will still defeated?Because of too few soldier?
No not at all. Due to the technological differences it's much more fun to be outnumbered as the British. The odds can easily be overcome. Though 1v1 it goes down to the morale of the Zulus, which to be historically accurate must be unbreakable. SO it makes it a difficult balance. But I find people prefer the Zulus to win ;) hahaha

It was actually around 2000 of the greeks that assissted the Spartans and it is true that they were very well trained BUT it is not true they were the best trained warriors in the ancient time as JungJung wONG said, The best trained army in the ancient times was the Roman army.... duh!
Wow....brits were over run very quickly with little or no effort from the Zulu nation...O.o
Pep pa
Brits were outnumbered 11:1.
They sacrificed 3000 men to take that hill.

Isais Adriel Rosado Rivera
Yeah man, nice camera work eh? ;)
ArcticTemper y es :)
I got 3 real Zulu war medals!
+Albert Macias You do realize the Anglo-Zulu War was 136 years ago right? By that logic, you would be 152 years old today.
+Gaius Julius Caesar ARE YOU A COMPLETE MORON? I COLLECT THEM! I GOT ONE FROM THE 24 FOOT TO A SURVIVOR OF ISANDLWANA!
There is no one alive today that is old enough to have lived through the battle.
+Gaius Julius Caesar I agree. Unless there was a far more recent Zulu war. rorkes drift 2? the return?
+Gaius Julius Caesar Lol you're as thick as a brick shithouse, of course he didn't earn the medal himself, it was likely passed down or bought or given to him by someone who collected it at some point.
cool.

I Think the British Have Really Brave Minds , because in Zulu War ... The British Were OutNumbered By The Zulu , But The British Still Stand ... They so brave :)
GOD SAVE THE QUEEN .... ( Watch This Video while listening to British National Anthem , I Done That ... And it Awesome )
Its just agame
Bruh its just a game chill...
lazar drekic well, it is based on a true story. And there were survivors, but only because the Zulu recognized those few british soldiers who managed to stay alive were honorable warriors.
***** But we still won ;)
the zulu were the courageous ones. They put their breast to the fire and lead with nothing but wooden shields and spears.
They charged headlong into bold action rifle barrages and cannonades.
That is bravery.
go away Rene :D i want to be the first
Be first on my next video instead :P
FIrst!!
