Hey Tom, In the last week I have had my best golf yet because of you I shot 2 39’s breaking 40 for the first time! The main change I did was to keep the arms straight through impact. I am truly thankful for all of your instruction because it has been better than golf lessons because you teach such a simple form of the golf swing that no one else will. Thank you Tom You’re getting me ready for next years high school golf season as my main coach -David
That's *AWESOME,* David!!! 💪💪 Congrats on your new personal best rounds!! I sincerely appreciate your kind words, and I'm very glad to know that my instruction is resonating with you and providing clarity in the muddied, overly complicated, oft-conflicting realm of golf instruction. Thanks so much for sharing your improvement and keep up the great work; I see a strong high school golf season in your near future!! Tom
Tom is the only golfer on UA-cam that I take advice from. I’ve been golfing for 2 years and because I didn’t know anything about golf I would try whatever anybody told me. Tom makes things make sense and I saw results instantly. I play in a weekly scramble and I went from being one of the worst D players to a B player just from watching his videos and doing the drills he suggests. I tell everybody I talk to about SagutoGolf.
I sincerely appreciate your kind words, Joe, and I'm very glad to know that my lesson content and teaching style are resonating with you and providing clarity in the muddied, overly complicated, oft-conflicting realm of golf instruction. Another great tip Tom! I went and played my second round of golf on Friday and shot 92! Nothing higher than triple bogey and got my first Birdie on a par4! I work in Aviation so I call my setup my “pre-flight checklist” and then I just think about the first 1.5 feet of takeaway, the ball striking is unbelievable!
A 92 in your second ever round of golf??? That is phenomenal, Nick!!! 💪💪 As someone who thoroughly enjoys spending time "in the air" piloting 737's and other equipment in my flight simulator I can certainly appreciate your checklist, as long as your mind is "cleared for takeoff" at the moment you engage the throttle and release the brake! Thanks for sharing your dramatic improvement and keep up the great work!! Tom
tom, was struggling past couple of weeks with iron ball striking. Watched this video and had my best ball striking round of the year yesterday. simple, nothing crazy. just hands ahead to start the swing.

Great video Tom on how to get a perfect impact position! I started setting up with my hands just inside my left thigh a while back and it has definitely made a difference in my ball striking. From here it is so much easier to get my wrists in the flat/bent back position that I want in my swing. As you noted, this is a great position for most of the clubs. Great job Tom! Keep up the good work!!
I'm glad you enjoyed it, John!! Actually, I prescribe that same hand position through the entire bag for all clubs when playing the stock shot. The only things that change incrementally are ball position and stance width. Keeps it very simple!! (And KFCrispy.... 😎) Tom
Thank you, Tom! By employing your easy to understand tips and techniques, I am finally hitting the ball farther and straighter. Watching that handicap come down is sweet! ❤

I was always an 'okay' golfer (shooting high 80's low 90's) but for some reason a couple months ago i lost my sense of hitting the golf ball first, and would always chunk my irons and wedges. I watched your videos on keeping your trail arm tucked into your body, and keeping your weight forward and this past week i shot 83, and 85 respectively on some relatively harder courses in my area. I can't wait to incorporate setting my hands forward for more consistency. The problem i have now is i strike the ball so well i have to adjust my yardages. Thank you Tom!
I'm very glad to know that my instruction is resonating with you, Alec; excellent job incorporating it into your swing and putting it into play!! Hey Tom, one of your students here, just wanted to say after golfing for around a year (taking it serious) the game just seemed hard to understand, WAY too much swing thought and overthinking of the swing. You advertise a "simplified" swing and it almost seems to good to be true. Keeping my arms straight and "holding" the tennis ball between them in my head has allowed me to break 100 the past 3 times i've been out. It's not that I was shooting 120's or 140's before, its that i couldnt get the ball off the ground most of the time! Nothing is more demotivating than puring a shot and then topping the next and not knowing why! Your simplicity of teaching and coach style has done so much for my ADHD brain you have no idea. Thanks dude and will see you in the discussions on the site, much love Tommy

Tom, Amazing simple swing. I use to think of so many thoughts before a swing I was all over the place. I set up, watched my shoulder go under my chin and straight through. I usually shot around 86 to 90 at my club. I went out last weekend and shot a 40 - 40. Hitting almost all fairway and all par 3 greens. Like you say, this is why we play golf!

Hey Tom appreciate this video. I have tried doing the hands forward and I hook it like crazy but the contact is amazing but massive hooks. Any reason for this. Thank you
The answer lies in ball flight laws, Anish. Clubface angle relative to target line is the primary influencer of the ball's starting line and face relative to path determines direction and degree of curvature. From there we can then do some reverse engineering to identify and neutralize the cause of a sideways shot. With regard to your specific issue, I would first consider two possible setup items: 1) Make sure your hands are not too far forward. They should be even with the inside of your lead thigh, with the lead arm and shaft forming a straight line from the face-on view. 2) Check your grip to ensure that it is not too strong. Beyond that, there are entire sections of my online school dedicated to diagnosing and resolving common swing, contact, and ball flight issues. Have you looked into it? @@SagutoGolf Tom, I officially signed up for your online school a few weeks ago. Am following the build your swing from the ground up plan. Really enjoying it.
Tom, love the videos and your keep-it-quiet principals! Am currently adjusting my swing to stack-and-tilt in an effort to push my 90s game into the low 80s. My legacy swing saw a large lead of the hands. Is it fair to say, based on watching this video, that the optimal lead is generally about keeping the "pendulum" of the arm and club in a straight line between the shoulder and ball?
I sincerely appreciate your kind words, and I'm very glad to know that my instruction content for this fantastic Tack and Tilt swing system and my teaching style are resonating with you!! In S&T the forward shaft lean is indeed predetermined at address. For the stock shot we prescribe that the hands be even with the inside of the lead thigh at setup with all clubs, with the club shaft and lead arm forming a straight line from the face-on view. The amount of forward shaft lean is then determined by ball position, which varies based on club selection - approximately mid-stance for the short irons, gradually creeping forward for the longer clubs, to even with the inside of the lead heel for the driver, with stance width increasing incrementally along the way. By the way, if you'd really like to get on the fast track towards properly learning this swing system in a comprehensive, structured, sequential platform, please consider my online school. That is where you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step, position-by-position from setup to finish, along with diagnostic and corrective tools for resolving common swing, contact, and ball flight issues, and much more. @@SagutoGolf Tom, thanks for the detailed response!... I have been watching your complimentary videos on UA-cam, and when on the driving range or course, about 20% of my shots are KFC crispy with a baby draw instead of my usual fade, with the ball seemingly effortlessly jumping off the club face. I just now signed up annually for your online school, as I'm not taking a systematic approach, and thus am only getting a KFC sampler when I really want the full bucket of KFC!

Hey Tom, when was at the range this past Sunday I tried to hit a ball with my nemesis(hybrid 4,5). Before I started watching your videos. I literally would top it. Unbelievable. Can't tell you how much these lessons have helped me start to regain my yesteryear. When I get where I want to be I'll be in Myrtle Beach to show off. Be good-Russ
Fabulous stuff, Russ! The Myrtle Beach World Amateur Championship awaits you as soon as you are ready. Keep up the great work!! Tom
Love your videos Currently hitting ball lower middle of club with no to very little divot . Ball going straight but not feeling I am really compressing it .Any suggestions ?
I'm very glad to know that my lesson content is resonating with you, Alana!! Consider the following possibilities: 1) Ball position is too far forward, 2) Hands are too far back at address (they should be in line with the inside of your lead thigh), 3) The swing center and low point are drifting backwards at some point during the motion (face-on video will help you determine this), 4) The downswing is steep and/or the path is out-to-in, 5) Early extension of the trail arm during the downswing (also known as "casting"), 6) Flipping/scooping through the zone. Though not an exhaustive list, those are the primary causes of fats, thins, and tops. By the way, always begin with the setup - in this case the first two possibilities - prior to diving into a swing intervention. I hope that helps! Tom PS: By the way, since you are liking my channel's content, I think you will also enjoy my FREE mini course - “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker” - where you can learn some key aspects of the swing system I teach in a more structured manner. Hi Tom, Thank you for your video tips. Greatly appreciated. The methods of stack&tilt work. When trying the full swing it hurt my wrist (obviously my fault) but by playing it more like a punch shot, I started to take nice divots and consistent long and straight shots. Now I am playing it as a full swing with divots and very consistent results and of course, pain free. Also the handicap is moving into the right direction as well. Thank you

Good stuff Tom! Amazing results with this setup! I'm still having trouble keeping my lead arm straight when I get over 3/4 back swing! I guess I'm too old and stiff, not getting it! Thanks for your time and sharing! Great stuff!
I'm very glad to know that this lesson resonated with you, James; excellent job incorporating it into your swing!! The key here is get to - but not go beyond - your body's natural stopping point in the backswing where the tilting, turning, and extending motions are complete, the lead arm has crossed the chest 45 degrees, and the wrists are properly set (preferably with a flat or slightly bowed lead wrist). This is the point where if we were to try to go any further any or all of the following will occur: 1) the lead arm will bend and/or lift 2) the wrists will break down 3) the lead knee will kick inward towards the trail side 4) the lead shoulder will level out and lose its orientation towards the ball 5) weight will shift into the trail side and bring the low point back with it, resulting in inconsistent contact and unpredictable ball flight. 6) you'll "chicken wing" and/or flip through impact 7) pain, discomfort, and/or possible injury We don't need to try to get to "parallel" with this swing, and fighting your body in an attempt to do so will result in some combination of the above issues. I saw the light. Stats: 79 yrs old female, playing for 13 years, lots of athletic experience. Lots of lessons. Just scored 44 on 9 holes, using Saguto setup and swing, which I’ve been practicing for a month. And no slicing. Magic.
That is *OUTSTANDING!!* I’m very glad to know that my instruction is resonating with you; excellent job incorporating it into your swing and putting it into play. Thanks so much for your support in sharing your "magical" improvement and keep up the great work!! 💪💪 Tom Saguto, PGA PS: By the way, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that a significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. In other words, no matter the club there is always some measure of forward shaft lean unless perhaps some type of specialty shot is being played. Hi Mr Saguto I watched a video from 2 years ago where you recommended arms straight at all times i also notice you kept most of your weight on your left side at address Do you still keep most of your weight at address on your left side? Thank you keep up the good work and vids
I'm glad to know that my instruction is resonating with you, Ron! In the swing system I teach we start with our weight forward (generally 55/45 for the short and mid irons, 60/40 for the longer clubs), gradually add more forward weight load into the transition (70/30), 80/20 halfway down, 90/10 impact, and 95/5 finish. There's no "weight shift"; instead, it's just a gradually increasing load onto the lead side. And the result is a centered, low-maintenance, body-friendly, consistent, and tremendously powerful swing. Also, with regard to the other video you referenced it is important to know that the "feel" is straight arms. Of course the wrists hinge and the trail arm folds to 90 degrees, and I did make a point to specifically mention that. By the way, since you are liking my channel's content, I think you will also enjoy my FREE mini course - “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker” - where you can learn some key aspects of the swing system I teach in a more structured manner. Excellent. Hands forward certainly is very difficult; and no one has found it more difficult than me. for, me the waggle is so important. when the digiti minimi, in the left hand, resists against the flexor retinaclum, as the wrist joint returns the club to the ball, in the waggle, it keeps the hands in a forward position. heel pad control, with the left hand, in the takeaway has to be key. it is very evident in your takeaway; and, as your backswing progresses, it extends your left shoulder joint. and, this enables you to make a big turn whilst keeping your head steady.
Yes! I am aware that many folks out there believe - and some even teach - that we must try to "hit up on the ball" with the driver. However, consider that in our stock setup with the driver the hands are even with the inside of the lead thigh (as they are with all clubs when playing a standard shot) and our ball position is even with the inside of the heel of the lead foot. This presets a very slight degree of forward shaft lean with the driver. Beyond that, the ball is behind the zero-point of the swing (which is even with the lead shoulder), meaning that without any contrived manipulations the club will still be on its descent - albeit very close to flat - at impact. So, perhaps with the exception of folks with slower swing speeds - or those Long Drive participants teeing it extra high and hitting maybe 1-2 balls out of 10 onto a 60-yard wide "fairway" - in general the path is still ever so slightly down. In fact, the PGA Tour average with the driver is actually minus (e.g.: downward) 1.5 degrees - nearly level - and it should feel level - but slightly down nonetheless. (Here is an article on Ping’s website addressing this topic - ping.com/en-us/blogs/proving-grounds/optimal-launch-and-spin#:~:text=According%20to%20Trackman%2C%20PGA%20Tour,85%25%20ball%2Dflight%20laws ) For these reasons I do not advocate trying to hit up on the ball, and efforts to do so due to erroneous advice has caused many an amateur significant issues with their driver. Upon learning this swing properly you will be harnessing the tremendous power source known as "angular momentum". This is the reason my students and online school members of all age ranges end up bombing it farther than they ever had previously, and I'm happy to let their unsolicited testimonials tell the story: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. Thanks - I'm glad you enjoyed it! We first need to be aware that camera angles in these videos can greatly skew the viewer's perspective on ball position. That aside, while this system affords you some leeway, in general once my students and members show some level of proficiency with the swing I suggest that they migrate to a stock ball position that is in the middle of the stance for short irons, two balls inside the lead heel for middle irons, and creeping more forward for the longer clubs - the farthest forward being even with the inside of the lead heel for the driver (with the stance width increasing as we move from shorter to longer clubs). From there they can make incremental tweaks to see how different positions affect impact quality and shot shape. Beyond that, based on your question the level of detail you appear seek is best found in the comprehensive, sequential learning platform of my online school, and it will make for a far more efficient and enjoyable learning process rather than haphazardly trying to piece things together through these channel videos that jump around randomly from topic to topic. Yes, Warren - This swing key also applies to the driver. In fact, it is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. To demonstrate, you'll find towards the end of this episode some practice range footage of me hitting a 7 iron, 3 wood, and driver: ua-cam.com/video/o0xscMyN3v8/v-deo.html Beyond that, if you search the word "drive" on this channel you'll see some related content. Hey Tom. Great job on these videos. I love your channel! So being "almost" a senior, turning on the backswing seems a little more restricted than it could be. So I was in the back yard today with some practice balls and a 4 iron. I know 4 iron can be a tough club to hit for some. So when I was hitting it really well, that was a good sign. So here's what I did. I took my normal setup. Next I drew the right foot (back foot) back to close the stance. I brought the club back inside the line as the closed stance allowed me to do (and makes it a lot easier). Then I discovered something. And I'm wondering if this is related to Hogan's comment where he said he wished he had 3 right hands..... So with the closed stance I found I couldn't turn fast enough in the downswing and my body literally couldn't "go left". In other words no matter how fast I turned, when I turned, my body "faced" the target at the end of a balanced follow through. I could not face left of target if I tried... physically. So I found that I was not only hitting the ball straight and solid, but I could turn as fast as I wanted and really "thrash" the ball and it was being hit real solid. The turn was the kind that swept the grass real nice and along the target line. So if I didn't "turn hard", I think my shots would have gone to the right. And this is where I was wondering how so many seniors have ugly looking swings but they hit the ball 250 down the middle.. they all turn hard. Maybe the closed stance was getting my backswing into an ideal "backswing slot"??? Your thoughts?
I'm very glad to know that my instruction is resonating with you, Steve! This is a very body-friendly motion as supported by the fact that a significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. *_It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion._* Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built. For example, with regard to the setup you may have noticed my "penguin feet". This flaring of both feet 10-20 degrees facilitates the proper amount of body-friendly, free-flowing hip turn back and through (similar in some respects to what you are saying, but without having to close the stance and potentially have alignment issues creep in). This is a major power move that also keeps the club traveling on the correct path. If you were to square your feet so that they were perpendicular to the target line, then your hips would be impeded from turning sufficiently in the backswing (which would then inhibit the shoulders from executing a full and effortless turn), and from releasing properly in the downswing to propel the club through the zone. Restricting this action will encourage too much of an in-to-out path, pushing or blocking the ball way out to the right (for a right-handed player) and can also place strain on the lead knee and the hip joints as the hips will "want" to turn through but will be fighting the body in the process. Have you looked into the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of the online school yet? Hey Tom, which set of irons is this set up useful for? I was told for longer irons (4,5,6) you shouldn't have much shaft lean at address, is this true?

Tom, you have really helped my ball striking by having the lead arm straight at address and straight as possible during the take away. However, if i line up driver the face will be open at address with a straight arm. Any suggestions? thanks.
I'm very glad to learn of your ball striking improvement - nice job!! I am not sure why your driver face would be open at address. Are you playing the ball too far back in your stance? For a standard driver setup the ball position should be approximately even with the inside of the lead heel. From there simply grip the club with your straight lead arm and the driver face set square to the target. It is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. My main concerns with regard to grip are that the handle remains secure in the fingers throughout the entirety of the motion and that the proper hinging and unhinging of the wrists is fully supported without any contrived effort. Beyond that, each golfer is free to add their own individual flair and determine what works best for them. Beyond that, just be aware of the tendencies and calling signs if your grip has a tendency to "leak" towards being too strong or too weak. Tom
Tom, I’m having trouble with squaring my club face to the target at set-up. I feel when I push my hands forward it opens the club face. Do you have a video addressing how to square your club face to the target at set-up?
For me face is open a degree or two to the target line at address. Consider that the zero-point of the swing is even with the lead shoulder/armpit from a face-on view. The face would be square to the target there, but since the ball position is behind that spot, without any contrived manipulations this causes the face to be ever so slightly open to the target line. This relationship - face open to the target and closed to the in-to-out downswing path - is how we achieve the stock push-draw ball flight of this swing system. While there are certainly videos on my channel that address this topic, a better option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the structured learning method that has countless thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Tom Saguto, PGA
My own personal thoughts and "feels" are not relevant to you because they are unique to me, David. 😎 Beyond that, they do change quite regularly as I'm always thinking about new possibilities for my lesson content. (Although as long as my setup is good and I've pre-established the necessary connections, I can trust that no matter my "trigger du jour", it's going to get me moving properly into the takeaway and backswing.) This is why I do my best to convey multiple feels or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. We're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. However, no matter the variety of suggested feels/thoughts offered for a particular element of the swing, they are all directed at getting different golfers to achieve the desired positions, motions, and ball striking results. This is one reason why the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of my online school is so effective, and why thousands of folks across the globe are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result (and I'm happy to let their unsolicited testimonials tell the story: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews ). The lessons and drills provide the guidelines and set the boundaries, while allowing ample leeway for each individual golfer to infuse and exercise their own uniqueness. The most significant difference between conventional set-up and impact is the orientation of the hips - parallel at address but open about 45° at impact. I find that if I put my body in the hips open impact position when aligning my club at address I get better ball striking and more accurate results. It also helps me to remember to keep the hips moving through impact.
Just start playing golf not long ago really enjoy it but I was wondering if it would be possible for you to also hit the ball when you show bad exemple ? ( hand forward opening the toe on back swing etc ) i think than personally seeing what go wrong would help me understand better ! But anyway really love you channel keep it up !
Welcome to this greatest of games!! I reference many common amateur golfer mistakes in my videos. But here is the key: My channel's lessons and tips are not a compilation of band-aid fixes - they are all elements of the comprehensive swing system that I teach. Now, could someone deploy one of my tips to field dress a swing wound? Absolutely. However, it will ultimately serve them far better - and will stand the test of time and pressure - if they adopt and commit to the system in its entirety, and that is precisely what the online school does in a structured and sequential learning environment. Thousands of men and women from across the globe spanning all age ranges and experience levels are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result, and I'm happy to let their unsolicited testimonials tell the story: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. Bit tricky to set hands forward for the 3 wood and driver because your ball position is already so far forward. Wish Tom would show it with the driver because with the long clubs, that has to feel very awkward . Thanks 👍
It's really not awkward at all. In this system the forward shaft lean is indeed predetermined at address. Aside from ball position and a few other minor setup and naturally occurring shaft plane changes, it is essentially the same swing through the bag. 6 foot 3 With abit of quick transition. Sometimes after work with lifting and such my timing and lower body not in sync.Should I move the ball forward.
Hi Darrell, Height doesn't matter so much, as I've got folks of all shapes and sizes in my online school who are now enjoying the best golf of their lives. It's so important to feel the transition in order to suppress the "hit" instinct - which plagues a majority of amateur golfers (the primary audience of this channel) - and get the downswing started in the proper sequence, and slowing things down to discover and ingrain our ideal swing rhythm is an excellent way to accomplish that. This does not mean that we’re going to be slow through the zone. We are simply dialing in our tempo for grooving the correct path and achieving consistent sweet spot contact (i.e.: maximizing our “smash factor”). Think in terms of Els, Couples, Matsuyama, Cam Young, Morikawa, for example. I did this with my 3W, but I put the ball 1 or 2 inches back in my stance. That would have caused my hands being in front of the ball at impact. Who knew? Off to the range! (But now using your method).
Nice!! In this system the forward shaft lean is indeed predetermined at address. For the stock shot we prescribe that the hands be even with the inside of the lead thigh at setup with all clubs, with the club shaft and lead arm forming a straight line from the face-on view. I was watching an older video you made from 4 years ago about how you actually hit slighly down with your driver. I'm kind of spitballing here, but does this sound right? If a pga tour pro had a slightly negative aoa, is the follwing explanation a plausible and/or likely reason that the ball is still launching at a higher angle than the driver is lofted at? The driver is making contact with the ball for around 1/1000th of a second, and in that time, a driver moving at 115mph is going to travel another 2 inches while maintaining contact with the ball. This time might be enough for the driver swing plane to become slightly upward.
My trail arm has the same fold in it at address that I speak of in other lessons, and yes - it does not fully straighten until after impact. That was simply not the focus of this video. Hei Tom, I have been trying to incorporate your main points into my swing but have not been too successful. When I do achieve good contact, the ball flight is always very low. With hands forward, closing down the face of the club, is this not a recipe for a very low ball flight?
No - not at all. Once properly learned this system will enable you to flight it as high as you wish. Have you checked out my FREE mini-course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker” yet? I enjoy the video. The setup obviously works for you. I must be doing "freaky things" because my hands are forward as well as more weight with elbows together, left arm straight, etc. My crispy KFC contact is with the ground. I take lots of dirt out of it! I went back to picking the ball clean off the turf since I can count on the ball going further than 14 yards!!!
Hi Jonathan, It is really a matter of proper execution of the setup and swing motion. For example, here are some key setup features for this system that are essential to achieving consistently crispy compression and yes - more distance than you will get from picking it: We should feel evenly balanced between heel and toe in both feet. This balance is achieved by first setting our knees over the toes (or at least over the toe end of our shoelaces) to activate the ground connection, and then pushing our butt out to incline the hips and chest so that a relationship with the ball is established. The arms hang down naturally from the shoulders with all clubs except the driver, for which we push them out an inch or so to encourage more of the around-the-body motion needed for that lengthy shaft. We address the ball stacked shoulders over hips over knees with our weight balanced 50/50. We then simply bump our hips one inch towards the target while keeping everything else in place. This presets a little more weight forward - generally 55/45 for the short and mid irons, 60/40 for the longer clubs - while retaining the stacked relationship. Both feet are flared outward approximately 10-20 degrees, with the knees similarly angled outward. This orientation facilitates a stress-free, flowing motion back and through, resulting in a very body-friendly, consistent, powerful swing. Tom is this a good paraphrase of this video: In the world of golf, let me share a tip, About hands ahead at setup, don't let them slip. For when you swing, it's truly no jest, The difference it makes, will have you beating your chest. Imagine the impact, like KFC's fried, With hands leading the way, you'll feel so much pride. So set up your stance, don't be remiss, Set your hands like this for ball-striking blitz. Now, onto the arms, a crucial part, For crispy contact, let's make them smart. Keep them steady, not flimsy or weak, And watch as your golf game reaches its peak. You'll swing with grace, like a bird in the sky, Hitting balls so straight, you'll want to cry. Gone are the slices, the hooks, and the yanks, With KFC-like impact, you'll be giving thanks! So remember this wisdom, when you hit the course, Hands ahead, and arms set, there will be no remorse. Laugh, smile, and swing with glee, With this secret, you'll set your golf game free!
Still much too much time on your hands, Bob.......though well said nonetheless in your trademark prose! I sure hope your "retirement prospecting" trip to FL proves fruitful as I think you and Tom H. are going to get along quite well...... 😎 Keep it KFCrispy! Tom

Yes! This swing key also applies through your entire bag. In fact, it is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences (including ball position) and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. There's no conflict between this lesson and my content pertaining to the impact condition and "release". With regard to the erroneous notion that we need to manufacture some type of a rolling or flipping "release", given the inability of most folks to spend sufficient time at the range to lock in the required exactness of this action this misguided thought has led countless golfers astray. It's not something that most pros are trying to actively manufacture during the split second that the clubhead is traveling a distance of approximately 6' from parallel to parallel at speeds in excess of 100 mph. The forearms will naturally "trade places" from pre- to post-impact, but this should not be construed as a contrived move (although many a casual observer has gone down that rabbit hole). There really ought not be any active manipulation of the hands through the zone and attempts to precisely time any such rolling or flipping - which does nothing for swing speed - have relegated many an amateur to the vast abyss of inconsistency and frustration. Here are a couple of my channel episodes that may help to clarify: - ua-cam.com/video/Fe2kQ44azJ4/v-deo.html - ua-cam.com/video/SunCR5uJ_ao/v-deo.html - ua-cam.com/video/zw7Rzstq4gY/v-deo.html Tom

Another great tip Tom! I went and played my second round of golf on Friday and shot 92! Nothing higher than triple bogey and got my first Birdie on a par4!

(Sorry about those yardage recalculations; I'm sure you'll get over it....😎)

That's fabulous, Scott!! Congrats on your great round!! 💪💪

This makes great sense.

Hey Tom, when was at the range this past Sunday I tried to hit a ball with my nemesis(hybrid 4,5). Before I started watching your videos. I literally would top it.

This is the point where if we were to try to go any further any or all of the following will occur:
1) the lead arm will bend and/or lift
2) the wrists will break down
3) the lead knee will kick inward towards the trail side
4) the lead shoulder will level out and lose its orientation towards the ball
5) weight will shift into the trail side and bring the low point back with it, resulting in inconsistent contact and unpredictable ball flight.
6) you'll "chicken wing" and/or flip through impact
7) pain, discomfort, and/or possible injury
We don't need to try to get to "parallel" with this swing, and fighting your body in an attempt to do so will result in some combination of the above issues. If you have a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion and execute this swing properly you will have created width and plenty of distance for that club to travel by taking it in deep, and that will enable you to harness the tremendous power source known as "angular momentum".

PS: By the way, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that a significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them.

The value in terms of what you get for the low price point is beyond comprehension, and based on proven results it represents by far the best golf instruction deal on the planet. I hope you'll give the school some thought.

...Another informative video!
With longer irons such as the 4-5, do you still keep your hands foward with shaft lean?
For the stock shot we prescribe that the hands be even with the inside of the lead thigh at setup with all clubs, with the club shaft and lead arm forming a straight line from the face-on view. The amount of forward shaft lean is then determined by ball position, which varies based on club selection - approximately mid-stance for the short irons, gradually creeping forward for the longer clubs, to even with the inside of the lead heel for the driver, with stance width increasing incrementally along the way.

Thanks - I'm glad you enjoyed it, and as always the technical/physiological validation is admired and appreciated!
Tom…Do you setup with forward shaft lean when hitting your driver???
(Here is an article on Ping’s website addressing this topic - ping.com/en-us/blogs/proving-grounds/optimal-launch-and-spin#:~:text=According%20to%20Trackman%2C%20PGA%20Tour,85%25%20ball%2Dflight%20laws )
For these reasons I do not advocate trying to hit up on the ball, and efforts to do so due to erroneous advice has caused many an amateur significant issues with their driver.
Nice video, Tom. Always solid! But, can you do a video on ball position of all clubs on set up?
That's where - in addition to detailed lessons and drills that take you through the entire motion step-by-step, position-by-position from setup to finish - you'll find diagnostic tools for identifying and resolving swing and ball flight issues when they arise as well as all my short game instruction, plus advanced level courses and much more. Thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many seasoned, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result, and I'm happy to let their unsolicited testimonials tell the story: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews At just $14.99/month or $149.99 per year the value in terms of what you get for that price point is beyond comprehension, and based on proven results it represents by far the best golf instruction deal on the planet.

Hey Tom, will this work with a driver? Thanks

@@SagutoGolf wow thank you !
Love your videos, would you use shaft lean at address with say a 7 wood?
In this system the forward shaft lean is indeed predetermined at address. For the stock shot we prescribe that the hands be even with the inside of the lead thigh at setup with all clubs, with the club shaft and lead arm forming a straight line from the face-on view. The amount of forward shaft lean is then determined by ball position, which varies based on club selection - approximately mid-stance for the short irons, gradually creeping forward for the longer clubs, to even with the inside of the lead heel for the driver, with stance width increasing incrementally along the way. In other words - unless we are playing some type of specialty shot - the combination of ball position and hand position presets some degree of forward shaft lean for every club.
Thanks - I'm glad you're enjoying my content!

With hands forward what type of grip is best?
its just your normal thumb straight pinkie lock grip
Great video!
Tom
Tom,
I’m having trouble with squaring my club face to the target at set-up.
While there are certainly videos on my channel that address this topic, a better option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the structured learning method that has countless thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews

Great video Tom. What is your swing thought?
Regards
David
@@SagutoGolf thanks for an excellent and comprehensive reply Tom!
The most significant difference between conventional set-up and impact is the orientation of the hips - parallel at address but open about 45° at impact. I find that if I put my body in the hips open impact position when aligning my club at address I get better ball striking and more accurate results. It also helps me to remember to keep the hips moving through impact.

Aside from ball position and a few other minor setup and naturally occurring shaft plane changes, it is essentially the same swing through the bag.

@SagutoGolf thank you Tom..really appreciate the reply! Love the channel content 👌
6 foot 3 With abit of quick transition. Sometimes after work with lifting and such my timing and lower body not in sync.Should I move the ball forward.
Hi Darrell,
Height doesn't matter so much, as I've got folks of all shapes and sizes in my online school who are now enjoying the best golf of their lives.

Hello tom
Just want to ask
Shouldnt your trail arm and elbow bent during impact
Not straighten like that?
My trail arm has the same fold in it at address that I speak of in other lessons, and yes - it does not fully straighten until after impact. That was simply not the focus of this video.

Hei Tom,
I have been trying to incorporate your main points into my swing but have not been too successful. When I do achieve good contact, the ball flight is always very low. With hands forward, closing down the face of the club, is this not a recipe for a very low ball flight?
No - not at all. Once properly learned this system will enable you to flight it as high as you wish.

Hi Jonathan,
It is really a matter of proper execution of the setup and swing motion.

Tom, isn’t that the purpose of offset, to get your hands ahead of the ball?
We can either rely on corrective equipment - which is fine if that is satisfactory to the individual - or we can learn how to achieve a proper impact condition and take our ball striking and game to an entirely different level. My instruction is all about the latter. 😎

Tom is this a good paraphrase of this video:
In the world of golf, let me share a tip,
About hands ahead at setup, don't let them slip.
For when you swing, it's truly no jest,
The difference it makes, will have you beating your chest.
Imagine the impact, like KFC's fried,
With hands leading the way, you'll feel so much pride.
So set up your stance, don't be remiss,
Set your hands like this for ball-striking blitz.
Now, onto the arms, a crucial part,
For crispy contact, let's make them smart.
Keep them steady, not flimsy or weak,
And watch as your golf game reaches its peak.
You'll swing with grace, like a bird in the sky,
Hitting balls so straight, you'll want to cry.
Gone are the slices, the hooks, and the yanks,
With KFC-like impact, you'll be giving thanks!
So remember this wisdom, when you hit the course,
Hands ahead, and arms set, there will be no remorse.
Laugh, smile, and swing with glee,
With this secret, you'll set your golf game free!
Still much too much time on your hands, Bob.......though well said nonetheless in your trademark prose!
I sure hope your "retirement prospecting" trip to FL proves fruitful as I think you and Tom H. are going to get along quite well...... 😎
Keep it KFCrispy!

Tom. In the book 'Ben Hogans Tips for weekend golfers' by Canadian Ted Hunt Jack Nicklaus told him to set up in your impact position before start of backswing..Again you are plainly explaining in simple way what the Greats have always known but can't communicate in your understandable instruction.

@@SagutoGolf Great Tom!...other thing Nicklaus said he thought he might try but never did ...swing the clubhead in front of ball a little before starting the backswing .(Harvey Penicks 'bucket of water' analogy). Whaat? Even with hybrid, wood and driver? I maybe slice iron 6 and up because I don't put my hands in the correct position. I will try it out!
Yes! This swing key also applies through your entire bag. In fact, it is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences (including ball position) and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. To demonstrate, you'll find towards the end of this episode some practice range footage of me hitting a 7 iron, 3 wood, and driver: ua-cam.com/video/o0xscMyN3v8/v-deo.html

You would still say, though that on impact you were dropping your wrist, correct? Not rolling or leaving them as they are thought entire swing
Here are a couple of my channel episodes that may help to clarify:

Alex Cejka just won the seniors open using stack and tilt, seen many pundits trying to destroy his swing in last couple of days
He sure did, and what a fabulous performance in absolutely dreadful conditions!!
Haters gonna hate. They just can't help themselves. But unfortunately for them, the proof is in the pudding and the truth - as defined by the laws of physics and geometry - is most inconvenient.
