Once again, Tom showing why he’s one of the top online golf instructors on the platform! Heading to the course shortly and I’m excited to put another one of Tom’s tips to work. I still get really “compacted” at contact and my finish is atrocious 😂
I sincerely appreciate your kind words, Dustin, and I'm very glad to know that my lesson content and teaching style are resonating with you and providing clarity and simplicity in the muddied, overly complicated, oft-conflicting realm of golf instruction. FYI, the Precision Impact that I’ve demonstrated in various lesson videos including this one - ua-cam.com/video/hVxTSCNRroo/v-deo.html - is an excellent training aid that will help you to neutralize the cause and overcome this issue. I highly recommend it. If interested you can get your Precision Impact Trainer here - pureswingproducts.com/SagutoGolf (use code SAGUTOGOLF for $20 Off and Free Shipping) And while I certainly have other content that addresses your issue, a more structured option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Keys You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ Featuring 17 videos and 45 minutes of detailed lessons and drills, this is a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the formal learning method that has countless thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - now enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Thanks so much for your message and ongoing support! Tom, I've been a fan of your stuff the last year and in the last 2 weeks, I've developed a horrible case of the shanks. To the point where I couldn't hit a golf ball. I watched this video and then went out to the sim and really tried to exaggerate the feeling of keeping that right arm pinned to my side through the whole swing and it worked wonders. This is a key I have always known since watching you and reading Stack and Tilt, but like you said, I think I thought I was tucking it in enough but i must not have. Thanks for keeping golf instruction simple! having one feel or swing thought makes it so much easier and everything just falls into place. PS: you should do a video on fixing shanks!
I'm very glad to know that this lesson clicked with you and helped you to conquer those hosel rockets, Nate - nice job!! And I sincerely appreciate hearing that my lesson content and teaching style are resonating with you and providing clarity and simplicity in the muddied, overly complicated, oft-conflicting realm of golf instruction. I do have a member video specifc to shanking causes and fixes. In fact, there are entire sections of my online school dedicated to diagnosing and resolving common swing, contact, and ball flight issues. Have you looked into it yet? That's where - among many other courses and lessons covering various aspects of the game - you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step, position-by-position from setup to finish. I started using your method with my irons in late Spring '24. Wow!. I love the trajectory of my shots. My approach shots are straighter and are sticking on the greens. All my iron shots are better. I swear it. My scores been hovering between 88 to 96 for the past couple of years. Now I'm scoring between 78 to 94. Sure, I still hit some crappy shots, but it's much less now. This past weekend I was ready to commit to using the weight forward method with my Driver. I got a hold of a few good ones, and my buddies told me to go back a tee box. I've been golfing for five years, and the past few months have been pure gold for me. This method works and I am so grateful for your videos. I love it!
That is *AWESOME!!* I’m very glad to know that my instruction is resonating with you; excellent job incorporating it into your swing and putting it into play. I've been following Tom for a while now and subscribe to his course. Weight forward, left arm straight, point the shoulder at the ball, tilt. Reasonably good success. But it was not until I started incorporating the right arm tuck that things just came together. Love it, and thanks a million, Tom!
Outstanding, Glenn - I'm glad to know that "the tuck" connected the dots for you; excellent job incorporating it into your swing!! If our objective is to construct a consistent, powerful, low-maintenance ball striking machine - and why should it not be? - then we need to minimize those variables that require precise timing and micromanagement of positions. The proper tucking and inward orienting of the trail arm at address presets the structure that will be maintained during the entirety of the motion, and it also facilitates the external rotation of the trail shoulder - a critical element to achieving a properly shallowed downswing path and generating tons of power, thereby optimizing the machine! Thanks for validating this with your success and keep up the fantastic work!! 💪💪 Tom
Consistency, Consistency, Consistency. The great thing about your channel is you have tons of videos out there and non of them contradict the other. Nothing is worse than when someone tells you to do one thing in one video, them completely contradict themselves in another. Thanks, Tom.

This video just changed my life. I’m a disabled veteran with TBI and PTSD. I have been playing for three years now and spent hundreds of dollars on worthless lessons. I find it hard to remember how to swing consistently. I took this to the course and I’m blown away by the results. I need to work on accuracy, however I have the confidence now to swing away. Thank you sir for this lesson!

I'm near 79 and have a very painful lower back / right hip. I watch your vids and see you swing thru with plenty of hip and shoulder turn. When I use your weight-forward method my body turn (which is way short already) feels even shorter, which leads to a too-quick transition, and my hips stall on the downswing leading to fats and thins and hanging back too much. My brain just won't allow my body to "turn thru". But, today on the range I was doing better with your swing - especially when I remembered to USE THE SHOULDERs for the backswing. Fewer fats and thins. I'll keep on trying, but the right-side low back and hip is just killing my consistency. Good luck to you and your students.
I appreciate you reaching out and making me aware of your challenges. The swing system I teach - when *_properly_* learned and executed - is a proven body-friendly method. I can vouch for that through my own personal experience as a golfer who previously experienced back pain, and It is further validated by the fact that a significant percentage of my students and online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion. Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built. For example, the outward flaring of both feet 10-20 degrees in our setup facilitates the proper amount of body-friendly, free-flowing hip turn back and through. This is a major power source, and it also keeps the club traveling on the correct path. If you were to square your feet so that they were perpendicular to the target line, then your hips would be impeded from turning sufficiently in the backswing (which would then inhibit the shoulders from executing a full and effortless turn), and from releasing properly in the downswing to propel the club through the zone. Restricting this action can cause a variety of path issues and/or also place strain on the lower back, lead knee, and the hip joints as the hips will "want" to move laterally and turn through into the finish but will be fighting the body in the process. Have you looked into the comprehensive, sequential learning platform of the online school yet? You don't need the flexibility of a Romanian gymnast - or even of this far less pliable golf instructor - to execute this swing, experience great ball striking, and reclaim - or even exceed - yardages from years past. I hope you'll give the school some thought. Thanks, Tom Saguto, PGA
Thanks tom. I only started playing just over a year ago and was struggling with ...well...golf. haha. Power was nil and consistency was worse. Your lessons on variable elimination, slinging the right arm and my positioning and now I'm shooting 250 yard drives and I've moved each of my irons along two spots in terms of distance. My PW is going as far as my 9i was going a month ago and it's pretty much all Tom's lesson. If you're new to the game, this man is your bible

@SagutoGolf for sure! I can't wait for better weather (winter golf in the UK is a bit like playing water polo with a golf club) to hopefully watch my 32 handicap come tumbling down thanks to you (and a lot of practice on the sheltered driving range) now that I can consistently put a ball on a green sized spot from within 140 yards

I've played golf for 40 years. There are times that I had really decent stretches of good golf, but then during an offseason or during a season, I'd lose the magic, and it was how Tom described. I'd be searching for the magic. The tucked right elbow is the key for me. It eliminates so many swing thoughts and allows me to just play the game. He's the best instructor I've come across.
Thank you again for your kind words, validation, and support, Michael, and I'm thrilled to know that you've found that lasting "magic" you've been searching for!! Saguto, with his common sense approach and upbeat delivery makes all the other guys pretty much obsolete. In his recent videos Tom has been going over these simple keys that pare down the variables in your swing, and they WORK! Now when my swing isn't quite right I can figure out what's wrong and fix it because I have so few variables that CAN go wrong. Thanks Tom!!!
I sincerely appreciate your kind words, and I'm very glad to know that my lesson content and teaching style are resonating with you and providing clarity and simplicity in the muddied, overly complicated, oft-conflicting realm of golf instruction. Yes - this is all about ridding ourselves of those swing-wrecking variables that have relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of endless frustration, and in doing so we are then able to construct a reliable, powerful, low-maintenance ball striking machine. And based on your comment, it sounds as though your "machine" is dialed in and being optimized! 💪💪 Thanks so much for your support in sharing your improvement, and keep up the fabulous work!! Tom, I've been watching you for years. The thing that clicked for me was right shoulder back. I was always inconsistent when focusing on lead shoulder takeaway. Too steep, too flat. For whatever reason, it felt manufactured and variable. When i focus on tucking that right elbow in setup and pulling that right shoulder back, the whole downswing just feels like an automatic unwind. Amazing!!
Excellent job figuring that out, Jeff!! This is precisely why I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. We're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. As such, it is important to understand that the lessons on this channel - while fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, feels, and/or common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. They are certainly not intended to be taken as a comprehensive, step-by-step, position-by-position learning platform like the structured curriculum of my online school, which I strongly recommend to anyone who truly wishes to get on the proper path towards owning this swing as it will make for a far more efficient and enjoyable learning process rather than haphazardly trying to piece things together through my UA-cam content. The lessons and drills provide the guidelines and set the boundaries, while allowing ample leeway for each individual golfer to infuse and exercise their own uniqueness. Thanks Tom, awesome. Years back my best round ever was an 83. I was a 21 handicap. The one thing I did notice was than I was relaxing and dropping my right elbow closer to my body. My distance didn't change but I was making good contact and hitting the ball straight...no slice. I will continue to practice this simple set up, right srm tucked and weight forward to improve my swing and therefore my game. True.

Golf practice in the winter here in the UK is tough. Its 4pm in the afternoon on a Wednesday evening and its 0 degrees C outside. Tom, your videos make me want to get in the car and get up to the range to grind. I got from a 16.8 to a 12.5 last year with your swing, but, i missed the right arm tuck. So thats the next part to get ready for the new season.

Tom, in trying to get back into the game after 20 years I have developed a severe bout of topping! - just seen this video and went up to the range (cold and windy! - but we play off grass, not mats) tried your advice, predominantly forgetting all the many and varied options of the backswing - so confusing in about 1/10th of a second! So just concentrating on 3 simple parts -------keeping the trail arm in a submissive state (3.36) always reviewing a simple drill presetting of the hand on the club, then ------- keeping this into impact -------- keeping the weight forward I never believed such a basic approach could work - but thanks to you - it does and it all comes from - "keep your arm in" Thanks again, excellent, John, 75, near Brighton UK

I picked up on this method watching porzak golf he calls it the giving blood position. Have enjoyed you stack and tilt method for some time. My driving is on repeat atm. Just the odd pulled shot similar to yours on this video. I had to really feel like i was opening / rolling right hand away to get the elbow in. Think some people confuse this method / plain with quickly bending the elbow. Great stuff tom keep at it.

Yes - if our objective is to construct a consistent, powerful ball striking machine - and it ought to be - then we need to minimize those variables that require precise timing and micromanagement of positions. The Stack and Tilt method I teach provides a robust _system_ for accomplishing this in a body-friendly, low-maintenance manner. It's crazy but lately I've just been focusing on keeping the lead arm straight. I realized that while I was focusing on everything else, my lead arm wasn't staying straight. That's like, rule number 1 of learning to swing, and I forgot it! There's a reason people tell you to do it. I find it really helps to do a few practice swings keeping the lead arm bolt straight through contact, and just feeling the hinge in the wrist. That and bending the lead knee to rotate back properly have really helped.
It is indeed _THAT_ important! The lead arm is the radius of our swing circle, and as such if we desire ball striking consistency we should endeavor to preserve our radius from address to post-impact. Our lead arm should hang down relatively straight without any "forcing" at address. From there, as long as we have a proper setup which is supportive of an unrestricted motion we ought to be able to maintain the same level of straightness that we started with. This is not difficult to accomplish as long as we don't try to take it back beyond our body’s natural stopping point. In other words, if our setup can facilitate an effortless 45 degrees of hip turn, then from there all we need is another 45 degrees of shoulder turn to get to the full 90. If any of those turns are restricted by an improper setup, then the lead arm will fight the stymied torso and have a good chance of breaking down. And while there is certainly content on my channel that addresses this topic, a more structured option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Keys You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ Featuring 17 videos and 45 minutes of detailed lessons and drills, this is a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the formal learning method that has countless thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - now enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Sounds like you are making some real progress, so keep up the great work! Excellent. You are swinging great; and, look to be setting up to the ball very well. The hooked tee shot at 7.45 is easily fixed; but, there was quite a significant disconnect in your downswing. Your body turns thru; but, your right arm moves down in a vertical direction. Your arm then has to turn over to catch up with your body. This is easily fixed by just simply pressing the left side of your right forearm towards left arm in the transition. And, you can actually see Hogan demonstrating this in his Shells Wonderful World Of Golf swing lesson- if you don't listen to what he says. He actively turns his left hip with the first demonstration swing he makes; but, from there on he starts down by pressing his right forearm towards his left arm. And, for some reason this actually triggers the the movement of left hip to the left.
I appreciate that! Yes - my commentary on that hooked tee shot was that I lost my trail arm connection, so your analysis is spot on. And I agree that your left side of the right forearm feel that you reference is absolutely a viable one for achieving the necessary action. Thanks again for the detailed comment and support! Tom
@SagutoGolf Thanks for that Tom. When we look closely at Hogan's Shell's Wonderful World of Golf swing lesson we can see that he presses his right forearm towards his left arm in the start of his downswing, when he does demonstration. And, when he hits the ball it is very notable how much his right arm moves; and, how, little his left arm moves, in the start of his downswing. He keeps pushing back with his left hand and arm in the transition.
I appreciate that, Shane! I'm very glad to know that this on-course format resonated with you, and I hope you are able to use the lesson detail contained therein to the betterment of your game. I appreciate that, and I'm very glad to know that my instruction content and teaching style are resonating with you!! Absolutely love the on course instruction vid and doing my best to live by these fundamentals. Question - would you keep it the same for full wedges or make any adjustments with wrist hinge etc? Thanks!

Yes - It would be the same for wedges. This is one of the most important tips for high handicappers. Earlier in the season I was focusing on tucking that trail arm in and "pre-setting" the path on all of my shots and it lead to some really nice consistency with my irons & drives, I had 4-5 really good rounds in the low 80s and then for some God awful reason forgot about it and got back into some bad habits losing that trail arm. Lets call it "Spaghetti Arm". It lead to more mishits and scores in the 90s. When it's not set its hard to control and it leads to your shoulders flying away in all directions. Even if its just a difference of an angle or 2 percentage of change to your rotation axis it introduces all sorts of unwanted variables. I find that for every golfer there are 4 or 5 major "checks" for each of your swings (Drives, Irons, Chips, Putts) and this is a major one. The biggest problem is remembering all of them!
But here's the thing, Nick - it's not just for high handicappers! Every great ball striker gets that tucked trail elbow condition at some point prior to impact; some sooner than others. "Gluing" it in there is a "feel" that is necessary for most amateurs to achieve this desired action - at least until they have properly ingrained it. That aside, nice job self-diagnosing your "Spaghetti Arm"! And your experience is quite consistent with unsolicited feedback received confirming that the lesson series on this "trail arm magic" has helped countless golfers across the globe to overcome wide variety of issues and experience crispy ball striking and explosive, effortless power. As for those 4-5 major checks for each swing, pretty much every one of those can be dealt with at setup, thereby leaving us unencumbered by mechanical thoughts when it comes to executing the motion. As an example, ideally we should simply "allow" the hand and wrist actions to happen without forcing anything. In other words, if we have a secure grip, pre-establish the connections properly in the setup, and have a foundational base that facilitates a full centered turn without restriction, then once we've ingrained the correct positions through sequential drilling and repetition we can entrust the motion to the big muscles and allow the wrists, hands, and club to simply go along for the ride and respond accordingly as if on autopilot. The power accumulators - including the proper wrist and hand action - will then naturally load and fire with no contrived manipulations or precise timing necessary, thereby returning the face to the position pre-established at address. The trail arm is somewhat similar to how you're meant to hit a squash ball! Never thought of it like that but once again nailed the advise. Can't wait to hit again
Well, Oliver, this is really going to help you to "squash" - or compress- the golf ball!....😎 Seriously, my lesson series on this "trail arm magic" have helped countless golfers across the globe to overcome a wide variety of swing issues and experience great ball striking. I’m confident this concept will perform well for you too! Tom
I appreciate that, Steve! My main concerns with regard to grip are that the handle remains secure throughout the entirety of the motion and that the proper hinging and unhinging of the wrists is fully supported without any contrived effort. Beyond that, each golfer is free to determine what style and pressure works best for them. Having said that, it is important to understand that anything to either side of neutral disrupts the natural geometry of the swing that was preestablished at address and thus necessitates some measure of compensatory actions in order to achieve consistently crispy impact and a desirable shot shape. So though my personal preference leans more towards neutral, let your ball striking and shot shape be your guide. I'm very glad to know that this on-course format resonated with you, and I hope you are able to use the lesson detail contained therein to the betterment of your game. To the untrained eye the stock finish for this swing system may have a somewhat abbreviated look to it, however it is simply the result of a very connected, powerful, and body-friendly motion and confirms the following: 1) We retained the structure of our arms and shoulders that we created at setup, 2) We had forward shaft lean at impact for crispy compression, 3) We moved the trail shoulder past the ball, and 4) We did not flip or roll our hands through the zone. There's no need for the shaft to whack you in the back, and for many in the amateur ranks that type of loose finish is an indicator of a breakdown somewhere in the swing motion. Beyond that, I'm perfectly fine with the carry distances on those dialed down drives as they were leaving me a preferred full short iron approach. If I really tried to bust one in these cases I would have either run out of fairway due to doglegs or bunkering, or I would have had a less comfortable 3/4 or 1/2 shot into the green. I’ve noticed two key benefits of keeping my right elbow closer to my left while using a training aid ball during my golf swing (as seen in my down-the-line videos): 1. My right elbow stays in place and doesn’t slide behind me on the downswing. 2. I can maintain my spine angle throughout the downswing, as shown by my bum staying back against the wall. Question: Is this technique strictly for the full swing, or does it also transfer to the short game? If it does, which club would you stop using the tucked right elbow?”
Yes - those are definite benefits of preserving the tucked elbow, and they are two reasons why my lesson series on this "trail arm magic" has helped countless golfers across the globe to overcome a wide variety of swing issues and experience great ball striking. Nice job!! And yes, this can absolutely be applied to chips and pitches. Tanks Tom. It seems you start the downswing with your hip then your shoulders. Right? Is it for being more powerful? Is the opposite possible, without risk?
Hi Guy, When properly deployed in sequence our hips play a role in preserving our downswing path and they can certainly provide a power boost. When prematurely rotated, all bets are off. For example, the lateral targetward action of the hips acts as a governor on the rotational component, thereby enabling the player to keep their upper torso square and their swing center intact without having to fight their body. It's also a move that you will notice with every great ball striker. (Cue up a face-on video of any Tour player, put your finger, mouse pointer, or some other reference tool on their lead hip at address, and then observe the extent to which the hips move laterally past your pointer in the downswing while - and this is key - the head and thus the swing center remains in place.) This will occur naturally if we allow it to, but unfortunately the misguided "fire the hips" notion has plagued so many amateurs with an early-onset spinout that makes them steep and across the line, or they get stuck, early extend, flip, etc. For them, the "feel" of the shoulders leading will help in overcoming this, correctly engaging their hips and fixing their path, thereby leading them to a solid, "crispy" impact condition. In more general terms, I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. Thanks, Tom
Ensuring that the trail elbow, arm, and shoulder are behaving properly as demonstrated is of primary concern. Assuming that is the case, then there is leeway with regard to the lead arm orientation as a matter of personal preference and performance, whether it be the "Hogan elbow" pointing at the lead hip, the "DeChambeau elbow" pointing at the target, or somewhere in between. Tom Saguto, PGA

Struggling with Driver with this method. Wedges, Irons pretty good - although pulling to left of green. Utilities pretty accurate. Struggling with 3-wood and Driver - and those two clubs used to be my best in the bag. Hoping I can figure it out.
Hi Luke, It is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. To demonstrate, you'll find towards the end of this episode some practice range footage of me hitting a 7 iron, 3 wood, and driver: ua-cam.com/video/o0xscMyN3v8/v-deo.html Beyond that, if you search the word "drive" on this channel you'll see some related content. Oftentimes when golfers are hitting everything well except for the driver and fairway woods it can be attributed to one of the following: 1) They are not setting their weight forward correctly and as a result are tilting their spine towards the target. We should address the ball stacked shoulders over hips over knees with our weight balanced 50/50. We then simply bump our hips one inch towards the target while keeping everything else in place. This presets a little more weight forward while retaining the stacked relationship. 2) Their hips are not continuing their lateral targetward action through impact. This is common with the longer clubs as the wider stance means that the hips have a greater distance to travel, thereby posing an increased risk of premature spinout. If the hips stop moving laterally towards the target on the downswing - and they should move targetward naturally if we allow them to - then their rotation takes over, thereby stalling the necessary forward weight loading (we should be 80/20 forward halfway down, 90/10 at impact, and 95/5 in the finish), changing the low point and rerouting the club into a steeper angle of attack (AoA). This can produce a variety of undesirable results including fat and thin contact, topped shots and popups, straight pulls, and “banana” slices. Of great importance is keeping your upper torso/head in place (in other words, not moving towards the target from a face-on view) during the downswing and through impact. This preserves the swing center and the desired shallow AoA. 3) They are not allowing the length of the club to dictate the backswing path and are getting too steep as a result. The shafts of the driver and fairway woods are considerably longer than the other clubs and thus requires more of an around the body backswing as established by the shaft plane at address. It may "feel" flat as they take it back along the shaft plane for the first few feet, but as long as they maintain the "weight forward, shoulder down, and hands in" components while allowing the club to work around them, it should put them in the proper position at the top so they can attack the ball from the inside. (A good feel for that lead shoulder is "down and in, under the chin".) 4) Many believe - and some even teach - that we must try to "hit up on the ball" with the driver. However, consider that in our stock setup with the driver the hands are even with the inside of the lead thigh (as they are with all clubs when playing a standard shot) and our ball position is even with the inside of the heel of the lead foot. This presets a very slight degree of forward shaft lean with the driver. Beyond that, the ball is behind the zero-point of the swing (which is even with the lead shoulder), meaning that without any contrived manipulations the club will still be on its descent - albeit very close to flat - at impact. So, perhaps with the exception of folks with slower swing speeds - or those Long Drive participants teeing it extra high and hitting maybe 1-2 balls out of 10 onto a 60-yard wide "fairway" - in general the path is still ever so slightly down. In fact, the PGA Tour average with the driver is actually minus (e.g.: downward) 1.5 degrees - nearly level - and it should feel level - but slightly down nonetheless. (Here is an article on Ping’s website addressing this topic - ping.com/en-us/blogs/proving-grounds/optimal-launch-and-spin#:~:text=According%20to%20Trackman%2C%20PGA%20Tour,85%25%20ball%2Dflight%20laws ) If you continue to be challenged by this, then know that I do offer a swing video analysis service which enables me to put my eyes on your swing, diagnose any issues, and provide a corrective action plan if applicable. Glad you enjoyed it, Alan! Yours is an interesting scenario, but you're definitely not alone! Short of saying that you need to train your trail hand to hit - which I realize may be difficult - I would recommend you work on maintaining your connections and allowing the big muscles to bring you into impact. In other words, if we pre-establish the connections properly in the setup and have a foundational base that facilitates a full centered turn without restriction, then once we've ingrained the correct actions through sequential drilling and repetition we can entrust the motion to the big muscles and allow the arms, wrists, hands, and club to simply go along for the ride and respond accordingly as if on autopilot. The power accumulators - including the proper arm, wrist, and hand action - will then naturally load and fire with no contrived manipulations or precise timing necessary, thereby returning the face to the position pre-established at address. It's called "giving up control to gain control", and it's the formula for consistently blissful ball striking and seemingly effortless power. One of the keys in your situation is to not allow that strong arm - which probably seems to have a mind of its own in anxiously wanting to take over when you're trying to bust one - to jump ahead of the lower body and throw the entire downswing out of sequence, because if it does you're likely taking regular trips to Pull-Slice City. If you can train it instead to be a "slave" to the big muscles to the point where the shaft is parallel to the ground on the way down, then you should be in position to hit hard with the dominant hand as if it were throwing a frisbee or playing a tennis backhand shot. (In fact, many excellent tennis players golf from the opposite side because they are accustomed to the feel of a two-handed backhand.) Hey Tom. Curious, how loose would you say your wrists are in the swing ? Also on the transition downwards what’s your first thought? Is it the hip bump you’ve mentioned before ? Thanks from FL !
Hi Lucas, Though I like the feel of a secure grip, my wrists are tension-free so they can be fully reactive to the motion and the weight of the club. Ideally we should simply "allow" the hand and wrist actions to happen without forcing anything. We are minimizing variables and building a ball striking machine, and the golfer will find that as trust builds in the shoulders will rotate freely and the "machine" will then be optimized. It's called "giving up control to gain control", and it's the formula for consistently blissful ball striking and seemingly effortless power. How to initiate the downswing is a loaded question because it is so dependent on individual tendencies that I cannot give a generalized answer. If I tell you that it's a lateral hip slide but your downswing already naturally has sufficient forward force, then you'll hit pushes and/or sweeping overdraws all day long, and if I tell you to rotate your hips but you are already naturally applying enough outward force, then your destination is pull/slice city. I could also say the shoulders, or dropping the hands, or getting the lead arm off the chest, or rolling your trail foot targetward, or increasing pressure into the lead leg, and more.... Anyway, this is why I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. We're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. I notice that your lead forearm comes up to your back shoulder. I can't get any higher than midway between my elbow and shoulder. If I force my lead arm up that high, I end up getting very steep on the downswing and usually end up falling back on my trail leg. Makes for a nice slicing 130 yd drive 😢
It all begins with executing a good setup. And while I certainly have content that addresses your stated issue, a more structured option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Keys You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ Featuring 17 videos and 45 minutes of detailed lessons and drills, this is a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the formal learning method that has countless thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - now enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Thanks, Tom Saguto, PGA

That is a very generous and most appreciated compliment!! Mr. Hogan delivered phenomenal and timeless instructional value. But there are just so many misconceptions about his swing out there - particularly within the realm of misunderstood or misapplied instruction - that have sadly relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of chronic frustration. I'm doing my best here to clear these up one by one and put an end to this madness by taking what Mr. Hogan conveys in the “Five Lessons” book as his "feels", applying it to the reality of what he actually did in his swing, and translating it into something we all can learn well from. Because if we can get Hogan right there are tremendously effective swing keys to be garnered. Thank you again for your kind support! @ There are dozens of instruction videos out there that attempt to illustrate the role of the trailing arm. I think you have explained and demonstrated this vital swing element the best. 👍
they don't listen goose. you are spot on. the only thing i'd say is if amatuers concentrate too much on keeping right arm tucked is stiffness, they get stiff , quick and short.
I appreciate that! But here's the thing: Based on unsolicited feedback received, my lesson series on this "trail arm magic" have helped countless golfers across the globe to overcome a wide variety of swing issues and experience consistently crispy ball striking. 7:22 and 3:22 Question: I drew a swing plane line (using my sophisticated software currently under development - Scotch tape placed perfectly on my monitor) and replayed your swings in slow motion. Looks like you are taking the club back slightly below the plane and bringing it home perfectly on plane on the down swing. Am I seeing this correctly? Also, I saw this at 33:50 on your excellent teaching video w Derrick. Question: Is that intentional - to be slightly below the plane on the take-away, back swing? Thanks!
I hope you'll be patenting that hi-tech beta-tested software before someone steals it....😎 We must be keenly aware that camera angle can greatly skew our perspective with regard to observing swing planes. Ideally, the planes will match, but yes - it is perfectly acceptable as long as the difference is nominal and both planes are within a few degrees of each other. Tom, I started S&T about 6 months ago. I found I was having trouble making consistent contact. It worked wonders. I got my handicap down to 4.x, but it has jumped up recently. I started hitting shanks. I have been working on my flexibility and strength as well and have improved both - now it "feels" like my body is racing past my arms and leaving the club face open AND my addl flexibility has allowed me to reach out further. Any thoughts? You can probably tell I am treading water here!
Hi Frank, Shanks can be the result of one or more of a variety of actions: 1) You may be too steep on the downswing and thereby exposing the hosel to the ball; 2) Conversely, your downswing path may be too in to out, which more closely resembles the "feel' you are describing; 3) You may be rolling the face open or snatching the club inside with the hands in the takeaway; 4) Your wrists may not be hinging properly (which is often the case when a golfer tries to manufacture or force the hinge rather than just allowing it to happen); 5) You are setting up with the ball positioned at the heel of the club; 6) You are losing your pre-established relationship with the ball (i.e.: a deficiency in the Tilt component); 7) You are not completing your shoulder turn in the backswing; 8) More... What I'm getting at is that there are a number of potential causes, and without actually seeing your swing it's impossible for me to identify the culprit behind those hosel rockets. FYI, there are entire sections of my online school dedicated to resolving common swing, contact, and ball flight issues. Have you looked into it? @@SagutoGolf Tom - thanks for the quick response. I went to the range and decrease the in to out a bit and it worked wonders. Once doing that, it became obvious that I was also standing a bit too close to the ball. I will continue to dig through your archives and watch new videos and hopefully continue to improve.
Hi. Tom. Can you please tell me if your club leading edge is completely square to the target or open to the target at address. I discovered having a more bent knee at address together with a lesser forward tilt will yield better results. Maybe that is a feel is not real thing.
Hi Wentao, The face is open a degree or two to the target line at address. Consider that the zero-point of the swing is even with the lead shoulder/armpit from a face-on view. The face would be square to the target there, but since the ball position is behind that spot, without any contrived manipulations this causes the face to be ever so slightly open to the target line. This relationship - face open to the target and closed to the in-to-out downswing path - is how we achieve the stock push-draw ball flight of this swing system. I hope that explanation helps! It all comes down to ball flight laws, Alan. The ball is simply responding to the flight plan assigned to it by the clubface at impact. Clubface relative to target line is the primary influencer of the ball's starting line and face relative to path determines direction and degree of curvature. In our "stock" setup our hand position is even with the inside of the lead thigh - no matter which club we are hitting. Additionally, the lead arm and club shaft should form a straight line from the face-on view, giving our setup a lowercase "y" look (in other words, presetting some degree of forward shaft lean depending on ball position). Depending on the type of shot we wish to hit - push-draw, push-fade, pull-draw, pull-fade, straight, high trajectory, medium trajectory, low trajectory - we can then simply adjust hand position and/or ball position to accommodate our desires without having to change our swing. Pretty cool stuff, right? 😎 That's the beauty of having a swing system!! As an example, here is a shot shaping demonstration featuring a fellow teaching pro when we were attending Instructor Camp together in Miami: ua-cam.com/video/IcmKxfLz9EM/v-deo.html. Beyond this, I have advanced level content on shot shaping and controlling ball flight in the online school. Hi Tom , when you say the arm has to roll over up to the top , when I try that it feels like I’m rolling the face open , is that wrong to what you’re doing ? Thanks
It depends how you go about it, Rhys. If it is a disconnected handsy rolling action, then yes - you will flare the face open. However, if your properly preset the trail arm and elbow connections at address and maintain that orientation through the motion, then the arm will respond properly as if on autopilot. You may garner some helpful detail from this follow-up video I posted in response to a few folks who were not grasping this concept: ua-cam.com/video/c2ynQQbdEdM/v-deo.html And while there is certainly other content on my channel that addresses this topic, a more structured option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Keys You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ Featuring 17 videos and 45 minutes of detailed lessons and drills, this is a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the formal learning method that has countless thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - now enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Thanks, Tom Saguto, PGA
Tried this on the course today. Struck the ball well but pulled a lot of shots left. Some a long way left and with a variety of clubs. Couldn’t quite work out why. Needs more work !
I'm glad to learn of your ball striking improvement, Steven - nice job! It's important to know why the ball is behaving a particular way in order to reverse engineer the cause. The ball is simply responding to the flight plan assigned to it by the clubface at impact. Clubface relative to target line is the primary influencer of the ball's starting line and face relative to path determines direction and degree of curvature. So in the case of a pull, the face is closed to the target line at impact. There are various possible causes for this, including the face being too shut at address, a grip that is too strong, a ball position that is too far forward, weight not moving forward enough in the downswing, a downswing path that is approaching the ball from the outside, flipping/rolling the hands through the zone and more. By the way, always begin with the setup - in this case the first three possibilities - prior to diving into a swing intervention. For example, a golfer may have previously deployed a closed clubface at address and/or a strong grip to compensate for a slice due to a steep downswing path. If the path has been corrected, then that same grip can certainly result in pulled shots. And while I certainly have content that addresses your issue, a more structured option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Keys You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ Featuring 17 videos and 45 minutes of detailed lessons and drills, this is a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the formal learning method that has countless thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - now enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Keep up the great work! It depends on what the individual golfer needs to feel, Donny. When properly deployed in sequence our hips play a role in preserving our downswing path and they can certainly provide a power boost. While there are certainly videos on my channel that address this topic, a more structured option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Keys You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ Featuring 17 videos and 45 minutes of detailed lesson and drill content, this is a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the formal learning method that has countless thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - now enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Tom Saguto, PGA

I love it!

Thank you for your service.
Thanks,
Tom Saguto, PGA
Thanks tom. I only started playing just over a year ago and was struggling with ...well...golf. haha. Power was nil and consistency was worse.
As I've shared with others, if our objective is to construct a consistent, powerful, low-maintenance ball striking machine - and why should it not be? - then we need to minimize those variables that require precise timing and micromanagement of positions. The proper tucking and inward orienting of the trail arm at address presets the structure that will be maintained during the entirety of the motion, and it also facilitates the external rotation of the trail shoulder - a critical element to achieving a properly shallowed downswing path and generating tons of power, thereby optimizing the machine!
Keep up the great work, and let's make 2025 the first year of the best golf of your life!!
Tom
Thanks so much for your support in sharing your improvement, and keep up the fabulous work!!

Thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result of the school, and their unsolicited testimonials tell the story quite well: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews.

True.

Tom, in trying to get back into the game after 20 years I have developed a severe bout of topping! - just seen this video and went up to the range (cold and windy! - but we play off grass, not mats) tried your advice, predominantly
forgetting all the many and varied options of the backswing - so confusing in about 1/10th of a second!
So just concentrating on 3 simple parts
-------keeping the trail arm in a submissive state (3.36) always reviewing a simple drill presetting of the hand on the club, then
------- keeping this into impact
-------- keeping the weight forward
I never believed such a basic approach could work - but thanks to you - it does and it all comes from - "keep your arm in"
Thanks again, excellent, John, 75, near Brighton UK

Yes - if our objective is to construct a consistent, powerful ball striking machine - and it ought to be - then we need to minimize those variables that require precise timing and micromanagement of positions. The Stack and Tilt method I teach provides a robust _system_ for accomplishing this in a body-friendly, low-maintenance manner. And since Stack and Tilt swing system is rooted in physics and geometry and modeled on data from the game’s best golf ball strikers, I am never surprised to learn of similarities to what other very capable instructors are saying.

Love your contact Tom. I hit thin most of the time when l use a pendulum type swing keeping everything quiet except my shoulders. l need to put my left eye with a slight head turn on the ball swinging right handed. Your core seems to provide your swing speed.

And while there is certainly content on my channel that addresses this topic, a more structured option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Keys You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ Featuring 17 videos and 45 minutes of detailed lessons and drills, this is a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the formal learning method that has countless thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - now enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews

What a great video. Really good to see you hit a few balls on the course and talking about what you are doing. Pity you didn’t add ball position.

Awesome tips, congratulations!! One important question, though: how do you play a fade with this type of swing?
I appreciate that, and I'm very glad to know that my instruction content and teaching style are resonating with you!!
While the stock shot shape for this swing system is a powerful baby draw, we can shape it whichever way we choose and flight it higher or lower with just some minor setup adjustments and the same basic swing motion. It's a beautiful thing!

We are minimizing variables and building a ball striking machine, and the golfer will find that as trust builds in the shoulders will rotate freely and the "machine" will then be optimized. It's called "giving up control to gain control", and it's the formula for consistently blissful ball striking and seemingly effortless power.
And while I certainly have other videos that address this topic, a more structured option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Keys You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ Featuring 17 videos and 45 minutes of detailed lesson and drill content, this is a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the formal learning method that has countless thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - now enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews

Hey Tom, this instruction sounds good. I'll give it a try. But what about the grip. Neutral or More Strong?

I’ve noticed two key benefits of keeping my right elbow closer to my left while using a training aid ball during my golf swing (as seen in my down-the-line videos):
In fact, here is a lesson from my channel's archives on this very topic: ua-cam.com/video/aatbA39KtRc/v-deo.html

Tanks Tom. It seems you start the downswing with your hip then your shoulders. Right? Is it for being more powerful? Is the opposite possible, without risk?
Hi Guy,
When properly deployed in sequence our hips play a role in preserving our downswing path and they can certainly provide a power boost.
Thanks,
Tom
How do you feel “lead elbow pointed towards target” affects the golf swing? I know Martin chuck is a big advocate for it. Thanks for the content!

Struggling with Driver with this method. Wedges, Irons pretty good - although pulling to left of green. Utilities pretty accurate. Struggling with 3-wood and Driver - and those two clubs used to be my best in the bag. Hoping I can figure it out.
Hi Luke,
It is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods.
Oftentimes when golfers are hitting everything well except for the driver and fairway woods it can be attributed to one of the following:
1) They are not setting their weight forward correctly and as a result are tilting their spine towards the target.
(A good feel for that lead shoulder is "down and in, under the chin".)
4) Many believe - and some even teach - that we must try to "hit up on the ball" with the driver. (Here is an article on Ping’s website addressing this topic - ping.com/en-us/blogs/proving-grounds/optimal-launch-and-spin#:~:text=According%20to%20Trackman%2C%20PGA%20Tour,85%25%20ball%2Dflight%20laws )

Great video. But I am a lefty that plays right handed. Does this create unique issues in the swing
(In fact, many excellent tennis players golf from the opposite side because they are accustomed to the feel of a two-handed backhand.)

Hey Tom. Curious, how loose would you say your wrists are in the swing ? Also on the transition downwards what’s your first thought? Is it the hip bump you’ve mentioned before ? Thanks from FL !
Hi Lucas,
Though I like the feel of a secure grip, my wrists are tension-free so they can be fully reactive to the motion and the weight of the club. Ideally we should simply "allow" the hand and wrist actions to happen without forcing anything.
So, while there is certainly content on my channel that addresses these various downswing triggers, a more structured option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Keys You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ Featuring 17 videos and 45 minutes of detailed lesson and drill content, this is a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the formal learning method that has countless thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - now enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews

This is why the Tour Striker ball between the forearms is seen on PGA Tour ranges, it's putting them in this position.
Precisely! It's a very good training aid for ingraining this, Steve.

Tom, quick question, are there exercises / stretches you recommend to get / keep your right arm tucked in fit?
Hi Simon,
The action resembles that of a baseball pitcher with regard to the extrnal rotation of the trail arm and shoulder. I just preset it at address and maintain the established connection points and arm structure throughout the motion without giving much thought to it. If you are looking for stretches/exercises to help with this, then most likely it would involve those elastic bands for building in range of motion, but I defer to professionals in the fitness and physical therapy fields for any specifics in this regard.
Thanks,

Mr Hogan would approve. Great teach Mr Saguto.

Every great ball striker gets that tucked trail elbow condition at some point prior to impact; some sooner than others. "Gluing" it in there is a "feel" that is necessary for most amateurs to achieve this desired action - at least until they have properly ingrained it.

Question: I drew a swing plane line (using my sophisticated software currently under development - Scotch tape placed perfectly on my monitor) and replayed your swings in slow motion. Thanks!
I hope you'll be patenting that hi-tech beta-tested software before someone steals it....😎
We must be keenly aware that camera angle can greatly skew our perspective with regard to observing swing planes.

Hi Frank,
Shanks can be the result of one or more of a variety of actions: 1) You may be too steep on the downswing and thereby exposing the hosel to the ball; 2) Conversely, your downswing path may be too in to out, which more closely resembles the "feel' you are describing; 3) You may be rolling the face open or snatching the club inside with the hands in the takeaway; 4) Your wrists may not be hinging properly (which is often the case when a golfer tries to manufacture or force the hinge rather than just allowing it to happen); 5) You are setting up with the ball positioned at the heel of the club; 6) You are losing your pre-established relationship with the ball (i.e.: a deficiency in the Tilt component); 7) You are not completing your shoulder turn in the backswing; 8) More... What I'm getting at is that there are a number of potential causes, and without actually seeing your swing it's impossible for me to identify the culprit behind those hosel rockets.

Hi Wentao,
The face is open a degree or two to the target line at address.
I hope that explanation helps!

ok Tom i am hitting the ball fine. but how do you draw or faid the ball which are needed on the coarse??

You may garner some helpful detail from this follow-up video I posted in response to a few folks who were not grasping this concept: ua-cam.com/video/c2ynQQbdEdM/v-deo.html
And while there is certainly other content on my channel that addresses this topic, a more structured option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Keys You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ Featuring 17 videos and 45 minutes of detailed lessons and drills, this is a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the formal learning method that has countless thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - now enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews

Keep up the great work!

So are the shoulders leading the hips or is it the other way around? Thanks
It depends on what the individual golfer needs to feel, Donny. When properly deployed in sequence our hips play a role in preserving our downswing path and they can certainly provide a power boost.
