  • Using the Tesla Model 3 Autopilot in UK Town, Cities & A Roads in 2020. Can it navigate roundabouts? Does it work in the rain? Will it overtake a parked car?
    Today I wanted to demonstrate how the free autopilot works in the Tesla Model 3, and how it navigates our UK roads. Tested on a mix of A Roads here in Yorkshire and York City, with bends, junctions, rounabouts and parked cars. I cover the good and the bad and how I use it.
    Would you trust it?
    Thanks for watching, Chris.

    Excellent episode Chris that very much echoes my findings. I own a Tesla Model 3 Long Range with the Full Self Driving software. From my experience of 18 months of driving the Tesla to date, I reckon ‘Full Self Driving is going to take years to become 100% trustworthy. Maybe it doesn’t help that I’m a Driving Instructor, but I find the Autopilot absolutely scary on anything other than relatively straight dual carriageways and motorways.

    Good video.....just to clear a few things up, UK/EU regulations restrict the use of autopilot. For example the steering wheel is restricted from making a 90 degree turn/rotation. That’s why it tells you to take control on sharpe bends but in the USA this is not a problem

    • @mucky2hot
      @mucky2hot 4 роки тому +1

      The parked car situation in your video is also a limitation due to UK/EU regs as autopilot is restricted from overtaking a vehicle when it has to use the oncoming lane. It would have overtaken that car if it can remain in the same lane. Trust me I’ve tested this myself

    Great video as always. I love your videos as they r super informative and useful and to the point. Good to learn about what the basic autopilot could do.
    Never thought I'll use the autopilot on A roads or thru the town and roundabout (I thought only the FSD can handle roundabouts?), v useful to learn how it handles these country roads with/without a car in front. And now for the first time in my life I think I'd prefer to stick behind another car rather than overtaking them.

    Use a ceramic glass coat on your windows and cameras you should then not get any issues and you'll barely use your wipers so saving energy ♻️. You can also use Rain X for a cheaper option just apply it to the front screen once a month and the sides every 3 to 6 months. Buy a soft clay bar from Built Hamber to clean the glass prior to any coatings.. Once you start using either option you'll never go back, wipers are so last year..

    That's a shame, it really isn't ready for UK roads just yet. I was considering getting one for my wife as she is a very nervous driver and I thought that if 80% of the driving is done for her and she would only have to do small tasks/inputs, it would ease her nerves. I think it would stress her out more at the moment due to the unpredictable nature of the autopilot. I will give it a couple more years until the technology is ready for European roads. Thanks, your video was super helpful.

    Great video. I do hope someone in Tesla is watching....I have the Y model 2022 in Israel. I just moved to Tesla from Volvo S90 2019. I was disappointed to find a lot of issues with the Auto Steering. Mainly if I could sum it up it feels like the design was assuming much better conditions. On the one hand you need to stay attentive but on the other hand the steering wheel will not let you nudge the car left or right in the lane or switch lanes yourself after indicating. Very forceful interaction as well including some times in which the steering wheels trys to leave the lane based on false marking on the road. The lack of pressure sensors in the steering wheel is part of it I suspect. Also the default speed when you engage adaptive cruise control is either speed limit or current speed. I find that ok for the most part but at a crawl I would use 30km/h as a default for anything under 30. Just outside my neighborhood the car "thinks" the speed limit is 110 where it's 90. Which make the car try and speed too much. I did not find the exact right combination for that. Over all a bit of a disappointment.

    This is very important video. For the UK you gave demonstrated that fully autonomous driving is still a long way off. Autopilot is too risky on A/B roads and I would reserve it for long boring journeys where road lines are clear and good visibility. Did you find it a bit jerky in stop start built up area driving? We’re you making minor corrections ?

    • @SpawnPoiint
      @SpawnPoiint  4 роки тому +2

      In stop start traffic it’s fine, I find any road where there’s a parked car it just comes to a complete halt. As it’s not FSD, indicating won’t overtake either. I usually only use autopilot on long roads, as you say this was just for demonstration.

    Only had mine since Friday, but my experience is that it will not automatically adjust the TACC speed based on what it knows the limit to be. A bit of a silly oversight, but I'd wager it's done intentionally to widen the gap between base and FSD autopilots.
    Also, is there a simply way to leave autopilot and go back to TACC? When I press the stalk up once it cancels all autopilot modes which is annoying if you haven't quite yet gotten used to the strength of the regen braking!
