Brilliant band. Always amazing how they can hammer it out at 140 to the min, and still turnout world class display.'Back-in-the-day', no one wished to be attached to the Rifle Brigade because of the pace. First 5 mins, a novelty, after that, unmitigated agony. It's a lot more difficult to do than it looks. Still, a bloody fine band.
I served with the Green Jackets. (3rd Battalion Rifle Brigade.) 1965-1973) Marching @140 paces to the minute before you got into quick time. Ah! They we're the days. Now living in Oz
was privileged to serve along side of this unit in Berlin 1961. I was an infantryman with the 6th United States Infantry, Berlin Brigade during that historic year when the British sent in the Green Jackets and the Scottish Borderers, the French 46th Fusiliers, and the U S 6th Infantry to face 20 Russian Divisions. None of us would have surrendered, we were all ready to fight.
Hi There Daniel, came across the parade whilst in London, for a walk about only live an hour away ,used too go quite frequently then ,thanks for viewing..Dave
Hi Thanks for watching. My Great grandfather was at Sevastopol & Balaklava in the Crimea ,6th.Inniskilling Dragoon Guards, Ironic with the troubles there now..I have his medals Dave
+Daniel E. Southard Hi Daniel, that was the 2nd. Green Jackets (The King's Royal Rifle Corps) in fact, and the later became 2nd. Bn. The Royal Green Jackets upon amalgamation with 1st and 3rd Green Jackets in 1966. The Second was my old Bn. which I joined in 1974 and there were many old soldiers still there who'd been in Berlin in 1961 when the wall went up. One of them told me he'd been manning a 120mm A/Tk gun which was aimed at a Russian tank and waiting for the order to load and fire at one point! It was THAT close to WW3 apparently.
I remember marching in the Queens Birthday Parade in Berlin. By that time I had spent two weeks with the Green Jackets on an exchange soldier mission and was ready to match their step.
Light infantry cause any minute traffic jam.marching the 2 miles back to barracks unlike the guards and everyone else.tjat take 30 minutes lol...m Love the light infantry... We have the best armed services in the world.
American viewers may be interested to learn that the 4th Battalion The Royal Green Jackets were raised in 1756 as the 62 (Royal American Regiment) renamed the following year the 60th (Royal American) Regiment of foot.
Not quite, 4(V) RGJ was a Territorial Battalion and not a Regular Army one and it's history lies in the Militia and Volunteer Rifle Corps of the 19th century. The direct linear descendants of the 60th Royal American Regiment was the 2nd Bn. The Royal Green Jackets who had previously (until 1st January 1966) )been known as the The Kings Royal Rifle Corps.(The 60th Rifles). The 5th Bn. 60th Royal Americans was the first rifle armed battalion in the British Army and also the first to wear the Green Jacket.
