Devin! I just did this accudentally. If one of your cam gears doesnt go perfectly on the cam dowel it will start, and run but very shortly after turn and jump timing. My money is on that. Ive done it once in my life . Motor needed 3 new valved when it happened to me
One thing I like about this channel and I'm kinda new to it (probably a couple months) is that you thoroughly clean parts while they are apart! I hate watching people put in new parts and not clean the stuff before they put it all back together when it is so much easier to do it when everything is disassembled
@@mrwick7961 no obviously don't follow this channel very well he would never sell the Supra it's sitting in his garage at his house or it is in the shop next door
WTF bro... That sounded like the toothed belt that came out of place... It was singing so well and suddenly, it was gone... Anxious to see what happened to that new block... Hug from Portugal
The guy is a genius or what?....hardworking too. After that intimacy with the car you will fall in love with it.....anxious about the sound at the end,,,,what was it
@@mrreflex6748 Hard to say, but my guess is the tensioner either had air in or failed.. I've had Brand New OEM tensioners with air in em, causing belt to jump. Trick we would do at the dealer is bleed em before install then pre-load a bit. I've also made the mistake of improper gap on the manual belt tensioners. Common dealer trick is to use the grenade pin for gap reference. Really hope it didn't bend valves, sometimes you get lucky. Fingers crossed for ya man!
I felt your pain @ 16:06, and your face says it all. My best guess is one of the cams seized and that noise was the belt unhappily jumping over the teeth..... You could hear the engine bog down right before the belt starts skipping teeth.... So i say seized cam or a bucket shim seized stopping the cam if that's even possible???? Either way i'm excited to know what happend!
Brother I like how organized and clean you keep the shoo, like Josh Bader and Smeedia. I love all of you guys. Subies forever. I own a 2020 STI and I purchased it last January down here in CA. I keep it stock but I love looking @ great content 👌.
Nice vid. Nice short block. makes things easier. the oil cooler doesn't get torqued on? What soap is used for the engine bay? What the heck happened? Sounded like a head failure, or crank lockup. hydroseize
Damn that sound at the end was a huge kick in the gut. I hope you primed your oil first and made sure you had oil pressure. Definitely sounded like timing belt either broke or tensioner broke but definitely had some piston and valve collision. Hopefully there's not to much destruction with it only idling.
I'm sure the fanboys will jump me. I had 2 STI's l enjoyed them but wow they just break. Both where stock both bearing issues. I enjoy watching your videos firm handshakes.
Maybe the belt, or cam bolts. That or the AVCS cam bolts broke. I saw a lot of parts being re-used. When i redid mine. I replaced all the most of the torqued bolts. New water pump, gates timing kit. And more. Hopefully it wasnt bad… but that sounded like a dropped valve and metal being crushed to a complete stop.
Did you clean all your old parts with cleaner that went on to that new block could have brung contaminated material back into the engine or maybe it was just a bad block build but I hope it works out for the best for you it’s a very nice car I had 2017 Sti black owned it for a month and it blew up while under boost smoked the engine wound up selling it for scrap at my local junkyard there nice cars but that motor isn’t good at all they have so many issues then once you put boost to it bang
That happened to me when I was building my first forged ej. that moment has me traumatized every time I build a motor. Thankfully nothing got damaged the car skipped timing and I redid the timing and it started. It was actually my fault for not priming the car I just started it right away
I looked back did he forget to torque some of timing components? I did on my evo 8 and my motor sounded the same when my timing belt came off. Luckily only head was bad
Devin builds Subaru’s faster than the manufacturer 😂
😂😂😂
And better
🤣
And blows them up faster, that sounded timing related so another engine rebuild.
he can do it with his eyes closed already😂
The drop is on 1/27, NOT 11/27 😅 Sorry for the confusion!

Other UA-camrs: +fastens 2 bolts+ that's it for today's video...
Devin: I don't do that here... +proceeds to rebuild a whole car+
i agree...this man swaps motors in an entire vid. meanwhile your more clout youtubers will spend 20min installing a catback and then wiping it down.
he is a great mechanic ill give ya that. if you look carefully though, it's more than 2 days of work as he changes clothes a couple times.
Other youtubers would have made videos 2 months on the rebuild
@@Chris-hw4mq and they'd still have a running car his blew real fast lmfao
Patiently waiting for the Hawkeye Sti build

Missing a hex bolt on the exhaust cam gear cover on the new motor
I'm inspired by how hard this man works. You're the man, Devin.

defo sounded like something slipping but also sounded like it slipped and hit like a plastic sound

@Dion Tsai Sioe EJs are still belts. The FAs are chains.
@Dion Tsai Sioe did you watch the video? LUL
The worst can be it's repairable, but your self esteem not. Great car, great work. Keep up👍
Definitely sounds belt related 🤯🤯🤯🤯
Definitely sounded like valves hitting pistons at idle. Brutal.
Great work Devin. A pleasure to watch. 👏

as always your video's never failed. hopefully the motor is still good. like others said, it did sound like the timing belt snapped.
only tha the oil heat exchanger should be always put in new, since debree stuck inside.. keep on good work
I ain’t watched your channel on a few months and I’m glad I came back for the new Subaru series
dude is just killing it!!! amazing work ethics
How do you remember where everything goes when you rebuild it? Also, how do you know the proper values to torque all the different components ?
Devin you are a beast! Tear down, replace, fix, put together and start within one video…this is why I like watching your videos ur sick dude!

Hola saludos desde CDMX de 🇲🇽 siempre presente en los videos 👍
Awesome to see our car being build! Hyper Blue Gang!
I think its made insane how devin does this shit with absolute ease knows the inside sides of these cars like the back of his hand legendary
Something on that timing belt sound like a tensioner came loose and it jumped a load of teeth
Really hope the belt didn’t snap, it’s crazy how fast you did this though. I’m guessing it probably took about 8hrs, maybe 10 tops for you.
Mans putting in work!
Damn support this guy for over 5 years
Brilliant as always totally clean unbelievable build.
the timing belt literally skipped a bunch of teeth 20 seconds after starting
This Sti should be pretty easy to rebuild by now
10:30 and 11:28 is that the "easy" way to install the cam seals? Or is it better to install the seals with the caps on first?
Hey my friend, greetings from Istanbul Turkey, you are doing good work
That ending had me dying your expression says a million words
Can’t wait to see this
WOW!! Hope it's not as bad as it sounded.
Maybe it's edited out with the time lapse but none of those timing pulleys were torqued down or even run down with an impact.
all of that happened in one video? wow! good shit
Sounded like timing was off or you had interference which siezed the motor
Damn that ending has to be the biggest cliff hanger in all of television omg! Hope everything good doe.
Nice vid. Nice short block. makes things easier. the oil cooler doesn't get torqued on? What soap is used for the engine bay? What the heck happened? Sounded like a head failure, or crank lockup. hydroseize
Congrats on the new car from tri-cities wa
Did you retorque the block? I had a 2jz block blow on me when i got it new from dealer, didn't retorque it, but that was in 2005.
Damn that sound at the end was a huge kick in the gut. I hope you primed your oil first and made sure you had oil pressure. so uh, I'm wondering if you had the heads completely rebuilt top to bottom because at 6:05..... that aint good.
Damn that hits the heart
Did u prime the engine to ensure the oil pressure is good
Did you clean all your old parts with cleaner that went on to that new block could have brung contaminated material back into the engine or maybe it was just a bad block build but I hope it works out for the best for you it’s a very nice car I had 2017 Sti black owned it for a month and it blew up while under boost smoked the engine wound up selling it for scrap at my local junkyard there nice cars but that motor isn’t good at all they have so many issues then once you put boost to it bang
looking forward to the next video
Do you have videos where you do the same but explaining the process and torque specs?
New here so I’m curious
forget to pull the pin out of the tensioner?
Yikes thats unfortunate. I noticed as your building this was a chill build with oem parts. I didnt even see you put head studs on.
omg, you can't leave us hanging like that! u did us dirty like game of thrones ending a season
You Sr are a machine, that ending made my heart sink
sounded like a camshaft seized and the timing belt stripped the teeth off it. ouch thats going to be pricy!
Omg.. can’t wait for the next video to see what happened
That happened to me when I was building my first forged ej. that moment has me traumatized every time I build a motor. Thankfully nothing got damaged the car skipped timing and I redid the timing and it started. It was actually my fault for not priming the car I just started it right away
looks like he did the exact same

ngl dev i kinda been thinking, since you’ve sold the hyper blue evo 8 that you’d get a rare sti instead lol. hype for this build👊🏾

I agree or skipped some teeth
Didn't release the pin on the timing belt tensioner?
I looked back did he forget to torque some of timing components? I did on my evo 8 and my motor sounded the same when my timing belt came off. Luckily only head was bad
The release date on the video is incorrect. It says 11.27.23
Talk about a cliffhanger, great content as always!
EPIC cliffhanger!
Safe to say Devin is the only person in the world who can pull and rebuild an EJ faster than Chuck Norris
Yikes!!!!! Hopefully it sounded worse than what it really is!!!!! Praying for you bro!!!!!😮
Can't wait until November (sic) for the new DROP!
Is the drop Friday? Because you put November 27th for the date FYI
D, Vasyn teaser at beginning has 11.27.23 instead of 01
That sounded like skipping teeth maybe the timing belt snapped! 😵 Maybe that's how the lights went out 🤣🤣
So does he hold the record for fastest in and out yet or what wow this is amazing to watch !! Absolutely love it ! 💯
But then the carnage smh lol
New to the channel, I wish I had these skills.
The speed at which this man works on cars 😳
And that noise right there.... That'd be when I sell the shop and call it a day. After all that work. 😂
Sounded like the timing belt snapped and wadded up behind the timing cover. Did it snap because a camshaft seized?
Dat ending tho! sheeeesh!
Famous last word, "That did not sound good..." 😯 Sounded like a cam gear failure. Curious.
If I had to guess what happened is that one of the cam gears exploded and obviously sent a valve or 20 into the pistons.... super sad....
damn this is next level and doing it all alone
Man this Subie on dark blue Te37s would look badass🔥
This happened to 1 of my mates cars.it was a mk1 wrx.one of the values stuck and broke the engine.
I sold my 19' STI for a 19' RS3 and still can't NOT watch the GOAT.
That was a hard stop.
Cam gear bolts!
I want that silver Evo 4 you got in there man lol
if dont have the cam gears exact torch youll have problems like/ real bad.it jumped time
Got any plans for a vasyn drop with baby onesies? My little girl would love to rep while she watches the episodes with me 😁
Best ending for your videos yet!! But seriously wtf was that?!
