  • This leather project video shows how I make a western guitar strap out of leather.
    We have made many custom guitar straps over the years in our saddle shop, but this year I redesigned my pattern and decided to make a video showing how I make mine.
    We do have a pattern pack available for this project if you would like to purchase a copy. This pattern pack comes with 5 different floral patterns so that you can customize them how you would like.
    The pattern comes in a PRINTED version for those in the United States that we will mail out to you after purchase. If you are outside of the U.S.A. and still would like to purchase a copy, we offer a DIGITAL version as well. This product is a PDF file download version of the pattern. With this version, you will have to take the file to a printing company to have them print it out for you. The size of the total printed pattern is 38 inches by 48 inches.
    Here are the links to each version:

    Hello Don I just wanted to say thanks for the great videos . I do a little tooling myself but not the quality that you display . Lots of great tips, i know that for some of the guitar straps I have made it is near impossible to sell them at a price that most people are willing to pay. I’ve watched several of your videos and you have shown me many ways to speed up the process with tips on tools etc . I’m not trying to make a living at it just enjoy the art. Thanks keep up the great videos. James

    I’ve made and sold 4 without even really trying. I made my own pattern and really like it. I made one for myself and one for my son as well. They are great pieces to learn how to make and are very simple to build.

    I actually prefer the flesh side down because it keeps the strap from slipping. The ones that are lined wtih smooth leathers get kind of slick.

    Don,
    I have purchased a few patterns and got some free ones. I got the guitar pattern and the leather. Is there a way to share my work with you? There must be lots of folks that are proud of what you have taught them and would like you to see it. Thanks for you and your skill and teaching.

    Been wanting to do a guitar strap for my son in law , he has 4 guitars and loves playing . but i wanted to put designs that he is into . He and my daughter are into D&D and wanted to incorpret symbols like dice , and characters into it so have been slow on the make . but your info has been great , didnt know about painters tape although i have plenty on hand for my cricut , and thought the 9 oz leather would be too much . question i have lots of lamb wool (fleece ) on hand and was thinking of putting that on back what do you think ?

    Awesome work,love it...Mr Gonzales,just for clearification...you brushed in the black and then lightly oiled and then antiqued with black?....I just ordered your pattern for this

    • @johntuck8927
      @johntuck8927 2 роки тому +2

      All of the black is dye. He usually uses a fine pointed brush with long bristles. This allows it to hold a lot of dye & when you touch it in place, it will spread in bar grounding/backgrounding. Then you can use the dauber around the sides & ends. I believe he uses fiebings Sheridan brown antiquing paste (I've made the mistake of using gel before & it bleeds through the resist & colors it all).

    • @cliffspringer2611
      @cliffspringer2611 2 роки тому +2

      Yes he uses fine paint brush for the background and edges. Then olive oil lightly or to desired color then resist. He uses tan kote then antique paste. Then tan kote again after dry.

    Would you mind breaking down how you are doing your pricing for finished products? I'm struggling to see how you are profitable investing a substantial amount of time into this type of product. I'm trying to get my own business going so that info would be really helpful.

  • @bassalien

    Why do you punch after dying and all? Or was that just due to the 2 different pieces on the one with the liner?

  • @laurens4042

    do you have a rule for how to measure where the name would go on a custom guitar strap? I'm always worried it will be too high or low on the front or back when they are wearing it.

    Hi Don do you dye leather? If so what kind of procedure and application do you use, i find it hard to dye without the dye rubbing off (i do it with a wool dauber) using pro oil dye.

      I had the same problem, until I started using Fiebings Leather Sheen. It seems to work great, and doesn't change the color much.

    I cant watch your video because for the first 4 minutes you said the same damn thing over and over and over. I realized the first time that 1. you were making two "gitar" straps
    2. One will be single ply at about 10oz.
    3. One will be lined with a combo of weights to pretty much make a 10 oz "gitar" strap.
    I cant risk being retold this a 4th or 5th time.
