My Life in Gaming makes documentaries, deep dives into retro console hardware, and more.
"Play the 3DO! A machine for grown ups!"
*Shows Putt-Putt*
Meir I died once I saw that. Gosh, everyone was trying to be like Sega back then.
Airsh Bornely you wish lol, actually I guess they achieved that since they all went out of consoles except nintendo.
.....and your point is?
Adverts were savage back in the 90s :) love it.
Nothing beats that Sega Baseball commercial. "Hey Ricky!" NUT SHOT
That MK2 commercial was epic! I recall seeing the MK1 commercial all the time but that MK2, I barely saw, though it did leave an impression as I still remembered it all these years later. Thanks for including the full version, definitely nice to see it again!
1994: Is there a way to skip all these commercials? Now: It's cool to see these commercials again.
Stinger2578 unloved the commercials then. My mom probably wanted to skip them lol
Someone better tell 8 Bit Guy about the IR 7000
Every videogame commercial did cause wow feelings amongst gamers including me.
Everytime i saw these commercials, i was like ‘wow, cool, mom i want this, mom i want that’
Those were the hey day’s!!!
I'd love to see more of these kinds of videos, maybe for different years and such.
I have to say Coury did an amazing job transferring the VHS tapes to digital, barely any grain.
Loved the NINTENDO vs SEGA ads in the 90's.
I think I can recognize nearly every video Corey has behind him; Danzig, NIN, Prong, Type O Negative, Dream Theater, Tool, just to name a few.
Also bit of a correction; Headbanger's actually got cancelled in the States in 1995. The UK version did run until '97 however.
You know, in a way we’re kind of unlucky now that we can see all the video of any game we want. This video really reminds me how every time a game commercial came on I dropped everything and intensely stared at the screen. It was like a random Christmas present

Maybe, but now we don't run the risk of getting a bad game. It's pretty rare for me to buy a game I don't like anymore. Really at worst, I get games that I think are fine, but don't hold my interest. Back in the day I remember friends complaining about buying a game they hated. I was lucky as my father was a gamer so he was able to suss out if a game was bad or not by reading magazines and talking to independent store employees.
Hurray for mind control? No thanks. Don't you realize what they did to your brain thanks to television?
@0:26 Type o Negative!!
Whoah hang on Coury! Headbangers Ball!? What are your plans with the full 2hr shows? :)
I would love if he could upload them, comercials and all. I miss Headbangers Ball.
I was thinking the same thing. Would love to see these tapes. Watch some Danzig!
[Coury] I'd love to put them online, but UA-cam would pull them down pretty quickly I think. I'm working on something else.
If you have access, MySpleen would be a perfect place :)
My Life in Gaming awesome, I appreciate your efforts man!!!
Thank you for this Coury! I think the advertising is just as important as the games themselves. Lots of nostalgia watching those.
Thank you for preserving all these cool 90s game commercials!
Thank you for preserving these!
Very well said; these were among the few commercials we would be excited to see back in the day. Back in the '80s, video game commercials were even less common; the only one that I remember is Dragon Spirit: The New Legend. It strikes me as odd that while back then, we'd use commercial breaks as an excuse to get up and grab a snack, today, people willingly flock to UA-cam or wherever just to watch commercials. Times sure have changed...
7:57 Shield your eyes kiddos! And good lord these are nostalgic ads for me. 9 year old Shawn remembers like all of these!
AR GEE TEE, EIGHTY FIVE
BladeBlur
ARRR GEE TEE SEVENN-TEEN BAAWLLLMMMERRRRRRR
This video was so great right up until that! ;-)
Yeah - it was a bit of a shock tbh, Shawn. lol
Congrats on the channel though - it's getting picked up more often now, like the photos of the new Sega pads.
that elf from the sonic commercial is THE ARM from Twin Peaks!
Thanks for letting me relive some of my childhood!
How can we get the best picture from these commercials? 🤔
L0L247 RGB!
I know right?! mom and dad must have had an amazing S-video recorder and nothing but chrome tapes in SP!
TomGreen 99 lol
Brian Buckley I recorded shows on my VCR as a kid. I still have some laying around. Those were the days.
Since the XRGB mini does really well with 480i... I wonder i f you can use it to scale old VCR recordings
This was great man. Thanks for doing it
I wish there was a time machine, so I could go back to the 80's and 90's.
I was 2 years old. Aw the nostalgia.
Yay, the good old 90's.
Reliving my youth here, thanks guys.
Def wanna see commercials from 1998-99.
ah, 1994, i was in a 5th grade primary school, playing sonic 2 on Genesis all days (never bough Sonic 3 or Sonic & Knuckles until 1996)
RIP Peter Steele. Loved seeing that clip from headbanger's ball. you going to release all of those, too??
i second that
Didn't Peter Steele do the Jerry Springer show around this time (or a little bit after)? Some episode like 'Girls Who Only Date Metal Stars' or cheesily similar? Off to search for that now I suppose!
wouldn't he get flagged for copyright with the music parts? I don't remember the show, but seems like it would get the vid flagged
tron999 R.I.P. Lexington Steele as well
In 1994 the PC Master Race came into its own, and never slipped since.
Haha awesome, I used to watch MTV back in the early 90s when I was a kid.
Yes 1994 one year before the gaming world would forever be change
I completely forgot about my Sega R7000, wonder if I still have it somewhere.
Dat split second of Dream Theater tho......
Right?
My step brother had the Ir7000 which is now in my possession, but I was confused by the lack of Sonic as a kid despite it being released by Sega.
God I miss headbangers ball. Rock and metal were king, MTV was actually a music network and not bullshit programming . MTV played 24 7 from the time I was 12 to 17 on my brother and Is television sets,All of our friends gathered around the tv everyday and night watching mtv... God I miss the good ole days . Thank you for reminding me how amazing the 90s was.
Uniracers was one of my favorite SNES games. I would get so into it...
Those commercials brings me back. Amazing stuff!
SupaPixelGirl You remember for sure!
Great vid. Nice touch with all the Dream Theater on the tv. Good stuff man.
The weird Shaq-Fu guy was the bad guy in Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight
Holy fuck, that 32X console-dedicated ad was radical as shit. It was well done in my opinion.
21:18 Introducing the first *Doom-like* game for Sega
That's how FPS were called back then.
Growing up in the 90's, I miss the "Extreme Marketing" tone of products. Yes it was over the top and sometimes insane or even annoying, but that's what made fun to watch.
Never clicked on a video so fast! :)
I miss those days of mystery and wonder.
holy shit that zero tolerance commercial
A better question is "When was the last time you saw a commercial on television". I haven't watched normal broadcast tv in years.
Justin Parris true
You're gonna dump that Type O Negative interview, right? RIGHT?
Learned about Type O Negative via Spotify. I don't remember them from the 90s. They make good music at times but some people feel they are too Gothic ? whatever, i think it is good to be diverse.
I need to see it
I have a ton of VHS recordings of Beavis and Butthead and Nickelodeon from around 1997-1998 and have quite a few video game commercials. I tell people that in my opinion, about 99% of commercials from that decade were awesome!
[Coury] maybe it’s because I was a perfect age for it, but watching some B&BH while making this episode confirmed that it holds up pretty well. Still funny.
The new episodes Judge did a few years back were really good too.
i had a bunch of tapes with recorded cartoons from mostly cartoon network and hbo family and random game shows that my dad or mom would record for some reason. i probably played them everyday when i was little lol.
Overacting, Dutch angles, strong lighting contrasts, many hyperactive clips strung together… Ads in the 90s were so weird.
Video games golden era for 90s generation kids
Uni-racers looks like it could be revived as a mobile game.
7:50 I don't even remember this!
These are amazingly high quality compared to most adverts uploaded to UA-cam which are crappy, low quality, super compressed, 240p videos. I wish you’d upload these in 480i without deinterlacing, as they’d be the highest quality version ever.
Damn it I was gonna go to work but I gotta watch this!
i think i had the ir 7000 or whatever.. i either had that or something similar.. but the only other person who had one was this girl named robin and she was cool but we didnt talk much on it... it wasnt enough to receive a message from outside the room if i remember correct
Cloud Air it was then 90s. That shitmwas amazing even if you didn't have many people to talk to. Or a long range.
tru dat
So this is how games were advertised when I was a newborn.
seanmyster6 lmao. Yup
You totally deserve more subs
Thumbs up for Peter and Josh at the beggining of the video
Whoa, you actually have a tape of the “Do the Math” advert? I love these old adverts, but it’s really crazy to think that they were really used for advertising between shows or sometimes in middle of shows because I wasn’t ever around for them.
The music of DOOM on 32X is CRAP!!!
When I hear "90's commercials", I think of the Virtual Boy Commercials. They were... well. You probably know.
I was still a virgin in 1994.
I love this channel so much.
Loved the 3DO! Bought one in the fall of '94 when they dropped the price to $399.
Always love new uploads from My Life in Gaming :D
6:31
"We're never gonna make it to the Black Lodge!
Never really played Sega... Nintendo always had my attention!
These are high quality rips from old tapes in my opinion. I'm about to digitize old family tapes as well, I did one at CVS a while back and it was...OK. Did you do anything special? Any tips?
Dude, how to digitize videos could be an entire episode on My Life in Gaming!
Do you know about the BennVenn mod for the GBC? It adds a backlight to the system but has some minor drawbacks. This Does Not Compute did a video on it last year in August.
Holy shit man, these bring back great old memories. Lol i remember the cdi burn cycle commercial, at the time i had no idea what the hell it was.... didnt seem like a videogame. Thanks man for the nostagia factor!! Thumbs up!!! Shit man, we getting old man lol.
More please
[Coury] Hopefully I can. This was a pure luck situation, and it just kinda fell on my lap.
Was the guy in the Boogerman commercial Bulk the bully from Power Rangers???
TomGreen 99... He is also the guy who steals Pee Wee Herman's bicycle in the movie "Pee Wee's Big Adventure" these were such good memories.
Are you going to upload all of the VHS commercials to UA-cam, including the non-video-game ones?
The only good thing to come out of the CD-i: UA-cam Poops
The Super Nintendo port of doom was way more polished .
Do more of these please. This was fantastic.
The quality of this channel is outstanding
Is that James LaBrie @ 0:23?
Man. I click like on this just for seeing dream theater in the first couple minutes. Somebody had their eyes and ears glued to the right places way before the rest of the world caught up.
size t.. *WENTY TWO!!*
Seriously I laughed SO hard at this for some reason. lol
probably 12s it was for 13 century or however it was translated into english
Man, a lot of these ads really take me back. It's also kind of absurd to realize how crazy many of them actually were.
I love the 90's... I played with Super Power, I played it Loud, I was Bigger..Badder..Better, I did the Math, I was welcomed to the Next Level, I was welcomed to the R.E.A.L World, I headed for Saturn, but I was not (red)E.
It's always a good day when I see a new MLIG video in my subscription queue.
I remember those days. 3DO took E3 95 by surprise, announcing the M2 Accelerator, a technical update over the original hardware that would push 1 million polygons per second. Imagine having a console with Dreamcast graphics competing against the original PS and N64 in the same gen. 3DO managed to get many third party games for the console and advertised the then impressive looking Blade Force as an M2 launch title. But... the M2 would never become a reality. I remember buying Gamepro mags, I still have them with me. The last one I got was the Sept 95 issue. After that, they stopped being distributed in my country but I started to buy them imported many years later.
Great job on the video transfers!
I still have around 112 VHS and SVHS tapes that have tons of video game related news stories from 1987 - mid 90's (from CNN, E! News, The Next Step, Computer Chronicles, and more) + many game commercials from that time period, as well as some VHS tapes from the 80's of Japanese TV. I'm sure some of those must have video game commericials.
I need to look into a service that can convert these for me. I've been wanting to preserve and share these tapes before it's too late.
I was team Nintendo, but their 'PLAY IT LOUD' campaign slogan was lame. I was always jealous of Sega's slogan for cutting edge gaming "WELCOME TO THE NEXT LEVEL" . Solid. OMG, MTV's Duff there at then end doe, underrated 90's babe
Wow. What a heavy piece of nostalgia this was for me! In 1994, I was 11 years old, and it always threw me for a loop how in your face commercials were back then. Some of these I don't remember, like the Sonic ones (probably because I was a huge Nintendo fanboy back then, and would change the channel anytime Sonic showed up,) but yeah, those ads for those other consoles were ALWAYS trying to piss on their competitors. This was great, I'd love to see you do another one of these! Also, what's up with the HEAVY thematic use of grumpy/assertive old men and black and white commercials? Most of these commercials had some sort of combo with these two things. Weird.
Nice to see Dream Theater represented in the old HBB footage. Still one of my favorite bands 😆
I was a kid back in 1994 but I wanted to play Uniracers SO BAD but could never find it. I guess this explains why.
This episode was so well paced. It had a great mix of info, commercials, and personal stories. You guys are so talented. Keep up the good work.
Wow, this brought back so many wonderful memories. I have a tape full of gaming commercials that I recorded too somewhere at my parents' house that i need to dig up sometime.
I loved the second part of the Sonic & Knuckles commercials with the elves too. "Who's laughing now? .... Fat Man!!"
There were a few adverts not too long ago on Australian TV / Foxtel for Destiny 2, but it was mostly game footage clips and I'm sure a lot of PRE ORDER NOW being shoved down our throats.
Wow! 11:41 the bald head guy is Napoleon from Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. Always wondered what happened to that dude. Now I know. "We all know, the boy and the girls are doing it". That freaked me out!
You should check out some of the Sega ads we had in the UK in the 90s. They were odd. All based around this pirate Tv channel. There was also a commercial for Super MArio All-Stars with the legendary Rik Mayall in it. Not quite as in your face nuts as these US adverts though.
My god, nostalgia hits be so hard, though I don't remember any of these commercials. Then again, you said you got all this thru MTV's Headbangers Ball. I was too young for that, as I was probably watching either Disney Afternoon, Sat AM cartoons, Cartoon Network, or NickToons.
Hey Coury, what setup did you use to digitize the VHS tapes? Any tips about the hardware and software side would be much appreciated! How about a making of video? Anyway, keep inspiring us all!
I was only four when these commercials came out so I wouldn't remember anything if I did see them. My first console was an N64 that I still have, but the earliest commercial I can remember watching was for Halo 2, and that was a 2000's commercial for the Xbox. It's still badass though. X) **We ran from them, they followed... we thought they'd never find us...... we were wrong...**
1994 was an interesting year for me. I was 20 years old and lived in three different states: CA, WA, and then TX. I was living in Seattle when Super Metroid came out, and so I always associate that game with my time living there.
I bought my CD-i in December '90, and then landed a job with PIMA the next year, though I'm not sure if everyone who bought the system got a job with them. :)
Those game adverts back then are amazing, so much better than the awful ones we hardly see now.
