From what I remember, I believe the German "potato masher," was primarily a concussive killer. It utilized the sheer concussive force of the explosive to kill, with the fragmentation of the outer shell as a secondary means of damage. The Allied grenades were primarily fragmentation variants. Extremely entertaining video as always! Keep up the awesome content!
Assault grenades are concussive, defense grenades are fragmentation. Allied forces on the offensive would have used concussive grenades as well.
Fragmentation grenades are used by defenders because they're thrown from behind the cover of emplacements. You need that cover because you can't throw a frag grenade far enough to avoid getting hit by fragments yourself.

German Stiel Handgranates or stick grenade weren’t really made to kill by sheer shrapnel. They were mostly used for offensive purposes and kill or wound enemies with pure explosive power. Though fragmentation sleeves were issued with them later in the war to increase shrapnel effect.
I was looking for this. Stick grenades were termed as offensive grenades, while "pineapple" fragmentation grenades were initially defensive.
The thought being that you threw the offensive stick grenade as you were running towards the enemy, and the less shrapnel generated by the thin case made it safER to be just outside its range.

IIRC, Steilhandgranaten don't really fragment like Pineapple frags, they required a "frag sleeve" to be fitted to them to reliably fragment.
Stick grenades tend to act more like a Mk3A2, concussion rather than fragmentation 👍

A pineapple or mills bomb would spray shrapnel every where due to their case design. But the stick grenade used in this video most likely had a low bursting charge because the blast didn’t seem very impressive cause these were design to produce a large concussive blast.

Surely in a war scenario when someone chucks a grenade like that in your general direction and you’re unlucky enough to be just 5-6 feet away, that flak vest would probably save you from 70% of those fragments. You would still have a helmet on and your layers of clothes and your mag-vest on you. Probably the most exposed piece of you would be your legs and arms.
