Is LA's Langer's Deli Better Than Katz's? LA vs NYC Pastrami Battle
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 чер 2023
- Katz's Delicatessen is one of the most famous restaurants in New York City, if not the world. They are known for many great eats, such as the Katz's Deli corned beef and the Katz's Deli matzo ball soup. However, the famous Katz's Deli pastrami on rye reigns supreme in my mind. Among the best sandwiches in the USA and the best sandwiches in the world, it's hard to find a better sandwich than Katz's Deli's hot pastrami. What if I told you though that the best pastrami is said by some though to not be Katz's, or even in New York? For many foodies, critics, and Californians, the title of best pastrami in the USA goes to Langer's Deli in Los Angeles.
Langer's Delicatessen-Restaurant is the only other contender for potentially the best pastrami in the world, and boy is it good. This Jewish deli, though one not serving kosher food, is located in a less touristy location compared to Katz's Deli, but make no mistake about it. Langer's is every bit as good as any pastrami or Jewish deli you've ever been to? The only question is, is it better than Katz's? Watch my video and see who wins this East Coast vs West Coast battle for the best Jewish Deli in America. The answer may surprise you!

He was trying his hardest to give the edge to Katz as an east coast guy but in the end , he did the right thing. Respect.
The right thing was not to jump on the Langer's bandwagon when it was clearly inferior.
@@mikeymutual5489 he literally had both and gave an opinion. Have you had both?
@@Trentberkeley86 I haven't, but I have been up and down the east coast and found Katz's to be perfection. And since there is no improving on perfection, I am quite sure Langer's won't measure up. Plus, if you watch UA enough, we will just say that whatever he had last X he ate was the best X that he ever had, so you have to take that with a grain of salt.
@@mikeymutual5489 I do take it with a grain of salt, he had both and said one was slightly better, not the end of the world. Seems like you’re just set tripping
@@Trentberkeley86 Just because someone had both, doesn't make him right. Opinions can be unreliable. But you believe whatever you want. Also, thanks for dropping that gangster phrase on me. So trendy.
Thank you for comparing these two legends. I think you are the first UA-camr who has compared these two Pastrami Restaurants in a video. This is the one video a lot of foodies have been waiting for.
Now please try the number 19 at Langer’s when you about to fly back to New Jersey.
Langer’s is about the bread. Dismissing the first bite because of the crust is missing THE key element. Langer’s gets its bread mostly baked but puts it in the over for 10 minutes before using which gives it an unbelievable crust with and incredibly soft and chewy inside. It absorbs the fat juices carrying the beef, coriander, garlic, salt, pepper and mustard seed flavor of the pastrami into the bread which enhances the bite. I am an East Coast guy, but Langer’s is totally legitimate and so far is my deli of choice. Pastrami is a very complex item involving curing, smoking and steaming over at least a week of time. Most places have either farmed it out to mass vendors and quality has declined tremendously around the country-particularly NY. The daughter of the owner of Langer’s has opened a boutique called “Daughters” in West Hollywood which has slightly smaller sandwiches but has brought legitimacy to the West side of LA.
Langers makes everything in house. Bread is the best. I go in and don't buy a $22 dollar sandwich if smart like me go in langers order a loaf of bread for $9 @nd a pund of pastrami for $30 and make two or three sandwiches
I also think Brent’s Deli might edge both. RC Provision supplies pastrami to both delis I prefer the deli at Brent’s more. You also need Langers Pastrami with Slaw and some cheese. Katz deli is great too.
@@Pushing_peso_los_angeles_cathe pastrami comes from RC Provision.
That rye bread was so good, there's something about biting into it on the #19, best sandwich I've ever ate
This
Langers #19 is the best sandwich in california, it has russian slaw on it, perfectly balanced , i hope you can go back to Langers and try their house favorites. Love your east vs west series mini series.
this!
Agreed.
The #19 with the Russian slaw, and their in-house craft made soda of the month is... life altering!
#19 was created by God
Best sandwich in America get it right
Langer's is my favorite pastrami joint in LA. I've never been to NY, so the iconic Katz's Deli is #1 on my bucketlist. Hopefully, one day. 🤞
You gotta try it! I think it's a must experience for anyone on Earth who eats meat/beef
Langer's Deli is good, but the neighborhood is awful and very dangerous. Home of the MS-13 gang. They do have parking a block away.
@@dtna it is located in a tough neighborhood at 7th and alvarado, across the street from macarthur park. #19 is worth the risk. run FAST!😁
@@dtnathat's why UA gave win to Langer's or else he can't get out of there alive
If you ever wind up in Michigan go to Zingermanns Deli
I’ve been to all three and their Reuben is the best in America
This is by far the best review channel, i've found it a few days back and watched your videos everytime i ate lunch/dinner. Nice work!
Just ate at langers yesterday, it was unbelievable. I just finished the last bits of leftover pastrami while watching this. I have a French dip from there to eat tomorrow though 🙏🏼
It's always a good day when UA posts a new video 😊
Thanks for the kind words!
It made me crave pastrami on a bagel yesterday! So, I got one. Best $7 spent since my latte...oh, I got that to drink. Thanks for inspiring my craving, UA!
The #19 is what they are famous for. That is the hot pastrami, swiss cheese, cole slaw, on rye with russian dressing. But, all the sandwiches are good.
well we all know ua is gonna speak the truth. amen.
Thanks for the vote of confidence!
UA we are with you bro. You should try Pastrami Queen and 2nd Ave Deli in NYC.
Glad you tell your honest opinion and don't have an east coast bias, great job on this one👏👏
Nice review, Great job.
Thank you.
Nice job, UA! As a pastrami lover, and a New Yorker, it's nice to know if I find myself on the west coast, I have a place to go for delicious pastrami, thanks to you.
awesome review of both! i grew up a few blocks away from langer's, love it. but i've been to katz many times and i love it just as much. no lie about their matzo ball soup. so cool to see this, cheers
dude so glad your channel is ROCKIN!!!!! you deserve a milllion subs!!!!!! Keep being AMAZING!!!!!
Great video! My favorite is your reaction immediately after you take a bite of something and you really like it.
Epic legendary pastrami sandwich review! You did it right eating at Katz's one day and Langer's the next.
I’m going to eat there next month when I go to California only because you give it your seal of approval.
Wow, that's high praise. I hope you enjoy it!
Get the number 19, chili cheese fries with pastrami, and one more sandwich, alone or with a group
As a New Yorker, I'm sad to say
that Langer's is most definitely better than Katz's now, Katz's was better before, but it's gone downhill recently.
Great review🎉🎉🎉
I've eaten at Katz's more times than I can remember, I had an apartment on Ludlow years ago. I've only been to LA twice, but never Langer's. (Or In-n-Out) but it sure looks excellent! Love the ambience as well! Another great review good sir!
Hey UA. Just found your channel and love it! My new binge watch ch. keep on doing what you’re doing 🤜
I’ve never been to New York, but I live in LA and have had the pastrami at Langer’s and I love langers. Any pastrami that’s tough enough to cut in the rotary slicer is too tough. I appreciate the hand cut and fresh cured pastrami at Langers
Great review as always 👏 👍 👌
Thanks!
wow.....honesty! its who you are and what you do! authentic reviewer. i love and appreciate that. ill never try any of them in my lifetime but in my next life i sure hope i get the chance! outstanding video.
Great job...much love!
Great vid!
Katz's Deli is an institution and a must when visiting NYC! Thanks for the video ☺
Thanks for the great insight UA! It looks like there were plenty of seats available at 8am. What time does it really start to fill up? Thanks!
I go to Langers every once in a while when I’m in LA, I get mine with Russian dressing coleslaw and Swiss . Amazing.
Downside is that Langers is in the hood of downtown LA
that is a reuben, not the famous #19
Langers is in Culver City as I remember, not downtown Los Angeles. Maybe they have two places. Culver City is a nice area. 😊
@@Gene-dm6pm nope. 704 S Alvarado LA. Couldn’t be more in the hood
Based on portion size I think I would prefer Katz, you're paying four more dollars but you're getting double the sandwich.
Yeah I think Katz's is absolutely better value despite a bigger price tag
@@uaeats someone needs to tell Langer’s they need to supersize the sandwhich and name it “The Cats Meow” 🤪
I've had both and agree with UA. If you put down both in front of me I'd grab the Langers everytime.
Keep up the honest reviews
Your on your way to stardom
Awesome review.
Just wanted to thank you for the Langer's review. During my last visit to LA, we went to Langer's and you were spot on with the pastrami being fantastic. I always thought that Katz's was the best pastrami sandwich I ever had, and Langer's proved to be as good. Keep on reviewing!
Another big advantage of Langers. You don’t have to deal with the archaic ordering system that they use at Katz’s..
I’ll never go back to Katz again. Horrible dining experience.
@@jeannine1991Hahahaha 😂. Complete snowflake! Katz is not some hi brow , posh dining experience.
Excellent review UA. To me Langers has the best pastrami sandwich in L.A. I've always wondered who had the best pastrami because I've never had one from Katz. But I agree with you on the Langers bread. I really appreciate your honest review and commentary. I hope these restaurants watch your reviews. It would make them even better places to eat. Keep up the great work! I am looking forward to your next review, my friend.
Thanks I'm going to check it out soon!!
Nicely descriptive
Bro, you hit it on the head. Langers hands down, best pastrami. Though, the price: portion size ratio sucks.
I’m an LA native. Katz is pretty bomb, haven’t been to Langer’s, but will be going soon. Johnny’s Pastrami in Culver City is my fave, but it’s not the traditional pastrami on rye. It’s thin sliced on a french roll. Their spicy mustard and pickles are to die for and perfectly compliment the sandwich. Honorable mention goes to the Hat.
Gotta check out Langer's when you get a chance! Thanks for the other recs!
The Hat is really good! Haven’t checked out Langers yet but it’s now a must do.
I really like Johnnie's but I find the fat in the meat a bit stringy.
I like Johnnies and The Hat’s pastrami sandwiches a lot too but I would argue they are their own things that are like Phillippes’ using thin shaved pastrami and not traditional Jewish deli pastrami sandwiches
Johnnies and the Hat are not Jewish style Pastrami. Both are great, by completely different.
I’ve had both, and both are amazing in their own way, but my favourite all time is Schwartz's in Montreal.
Wow. I've been making to make a Canada trip for the channel sometime. Schwartz's will be on the list!
I agree Schwartz is superb
I think Céline Dion is still a part owner of Schwartz's. :)
Seems your in a better mood. Great review/content .
Yep, sorry about the negative attitude last time!
So; this was the sweet UA before the flight that turn him into a Hulk 😂😂. We love you no matter the mood ❤
Great review! I am so jealous, I have always wanted to try Langer's to see how it compares to Katz's!
Surprising. Thank you for your honest review. Im near LA but never been to Langer's. I feel like i need to try this legendary place now.
New to the channel. Really good review style and we have similar tastes. Not sure if you have a video or have made it to Philadelphia but I'd recommend 4th Street Deli right off of the WORLD FAMOUS South Street. Worth a visit.
cool vid UA!!!
Thanks!
Another amazing video!! I love your reviews! You should try Schwartz's Montreal smoked meat. Another iconic Jewish deli sandwich.
I went to Langers once. It was 10/10
It's dabomb not gonna lie
@uaeats I get the Corned Beef with Swiss. Cole slaw. And Russian on the side. But that's just me. Have a great day UA
Another great video 👍👍
I know it is not quite the same thing, but time to come to Montreal and try the smoke meat.
HAven't been back since Ben's closed.
I haven’t finished watching the episode yet but I hope you noticed the amazing rye bread at Langers as well as free parking in the lot across the street .
How did you not order the number 19?
Great video UA! I like the Michelin Guide recommendation! If I'm not mistaken they are using the Michelin tire logo mascot! How Bizarre is that!
Love you video s bruh
Thanks!
Your foodgasm at 8:28 😂
That looks so good
UA is so biased towards New York places. I get it but I didn’t realize this until these LA videos just how much of an old school east coast guy UA is. he also always should take a bite quickly then give his intro
Glad you visited my home turf! Have tried Langers, but not Katz's. My favorite: Johnnies Pastrami in Culver City, CA. Have to ask for the pickles bag & fries with your order.
If you're ever in NYC I recommend trying Katz's! It's worth the experience imo. Unless you really really can't stand lines
Any idea what they do with the slices that they slice off and drop under the counter at Katz's?
Is it just me or the size of this Langers Sandwich is smaller than what Im use to. But their Tuna and Cornbeef is also OUT OF THIS WORLD. Both KATZ N Langers are great. One in NY the other in LA. Btw I never like Tuna sandwiches. But when uts good its good.
Agree the corned beef is better than pastrami to me
I'll need to try their corned beef next time!
The pastrami and Swiss cheese should have been a tip off that Langers isn’t a kosher deli.
It's not a Kosher deli, more like Kosher style
@@cyclopsvision6370 no kidding. Can you read?
It's LA! Although they might do a good business strictly Kosher, the vast majority of people in California have their roots in the vast Mayonnaise and Ranch Dressing Ocean called the Midwest. It would be hard to put together a lunch crew from work or a customer's and go to a place that didn't put Swiss cheese or creme cheese or WHATEVER on a plate with Wonder Bread (see Einstein's Bagels) and call it the Fresno Special. Lunch is only the "mid-day tide me over" except for the Northeast, and the right tiny part of LA, San Diego, Palo Alto and San Francisco. For those of us with a more vigorous background, Luch is for Pastrami, Corned Beef, Chopped liver OR Capicola, Salumi, Parm Reg. OR Maybe a grilled Snapper, Yellow tail or Ahi Burger.
All the rest about the WEST is the Best. But, my Mighty Maker, I miss the food! I can cook well, but even the ingredients are hard to get. And except for 3 or 4 Bakeries in San Diego, LA--Fairfax District, San Francisco and Seattle--the bread is catastrophically bad!
The pastrami to bread ratio is higher at Katz , gets my vote. 🥩🍞
Its not about the quantity is about the quality.
Katz's used to give a lot more meat, for less...I still love them though
At my age, I go for quality than quantity
You never mentioned about mustard for the Langer sandwich. Does Langer sandwich have mustard and if it does, how was it?
The no. 19 is a cult favorite for us LA residents.
You have to try the pastrami sandwich in the reading terminal market at a place called Hershel’s. I’ve had Katz before and for the price and quality I think you’ll slide them above Katz and maybe even first when the price aspect plays into your judgement.
Sherman’s Deli in Palm Springs also has insanely good pastrami if you’re ever in the area! Definitely on par with Langers from what I remember, but haven’t been to Langers in at least 10 years.
I am a sandwich lover. I've done Langers corned beef and pastrami, Philppes french dip in LA, Al's italian beef in Chicago, Schwartz smoke beef in Montreal, and Katz pastrami in NYC. I love em all! And I have a triple bypass and failed kidneys to show for it.
As a regular diner of Langer's I can say you didn't get the amount of pastrami that normally comes on a sandwich. Maybe the cook had something going on distracting him.
I usually order the Rubin sandwich sometimes with corned beef sometimes with pastrami, sometimes with both.
I've never been to New York so I can't compare Katz and Langers. But there are other very popular and historic delis for great pastrami, one is Johnny's Pastrami and another is Factors Deli. There are other places but all of these have been in business since the 1950s except Factors. I think they opened in the 1970s.
You definitely stunk up the plane eating that before a flight
Awesome comparo! I was born and raised in NYC but have lived in LA since 1977. I grew up in Queens so I never went to Katz’s. In LA I haven’t been to Langer’s. I tried on a Sunday and they are closed. I have to try again, really hard. I used the trains, the station is literally across the street. I wonder if Langer’s has an overstuffed version and if so how much more?
On your next adventure to Los Angeles (unless you did and haven’t posted yet, another must try is Phillipe’s near Union Station downtown. It’s legendary for the French Dip and that’s what you need to get, the question is how wet to make it? LOL! Also they make their amazing “mustard” on the table. My personal deli favorite is Brent’s Deli in Northridge (need a rental car or friend) on Parthenia. My rec is the Black Pastrami Reuben. OMG. Brent’s also bakes their own rye so yes crusty! But OMG. Great video I’m so hungry now!
Thanks for sharing recs and experiences! Yes I did go to Philippe's on this trip and also Cole's for french dip sandwiches. That vid will be dropping as soon as I'm able
@@uaeats awesome, the other great debate and all just in LA. I look forward to it.
The rye bread at Langers is twice baked, hence the crunchy crust
Life long New Yorker and LA has excellent pastrami..no need for conflict just for eating..
Believe it or not, if you want another epic pastrami, you need to try Shapiro's Deli in Indianapolis. Yes, believe it or not, Indianapolis. Since 1905, it's the real deal and hasn't changed ever.
Wow it looks really well reviewed. Yes I'll try it next time I'm in the Midwest!
@@uaeats Get the pastrami Reuben. You'll see God.
I went This past week and I totally agree!! It’s mind blowing!! The bread was way better for me!
Hi, will you go to Musso and Frank to try their Fettuccine Alfredo or other resraurants?
I have one more LA vid coming, Philippe's and Cole's for french dip sandwiches
Thanks!
It;s not just the pastrami, you have to consider the rye bread and type of mustard they offer as well as he quality of the pickles. Mushy old pickles can be a 'deal breaker' lol
I hope you try out a French Dip from Philippe’s while you're in Los Angeles if you get the chance.
The contest needed to be between Harold's in Edison and Langer's.
Apples to apples is a fair test. But to really have the Langer's experience, you need the #19 Special, which is Langer's spin on a traditional pastrami reuben. Try it next time!
I suggest you try the pastrami at Famous 4th St. Deli or Hershel's East Side Deli in Philadelphia.
i’ve had both many times. this is the correct verdict. next time get the #19 it’s even better
You have to try Manny's in Chicago next for the ultimate Pastrami Battle!
Langer’s is my fave. Of course, I live in LA, but ordered Katz on Goldbelly. Actually, they’re both beyond delicious! I’ll take both!
While you’re in LA, you should try Brents deli in the San Fernando Valley not too far from LAX, homemade corned beef and pastrami
You beat me to it I love Brent's hands down Encino here formerly New Jersey I never saw what all the hype was about with Jerry's Deli but they're obviously all gone now just might have to go to brunch this weekend for a pastrami fixed haven't been there in a while❤
I just wrote my rec for Brent’s! LOL The Black Pastrami Reuben is my Krypronite. But Brent’s is only closer to LAX than NJ. The 405! Man the 405! 🤣
I'm not in LA anymore but I'll have to try it next time!
@@uaeats I figured as much. Just some delicious ideas for the next time. I should have added but it was a deli vibe, Killer Shrimp in Marina del Rey. (Near LAX) When you name the frikin’ restaurant after the dish. 🤷🏻♂️
@@johnkovalicky3389 yeah it’s my number one. The only thing that I’ve had that comes close is Shermans in Palm Springs where Sinatra used to hang.
I wouldn't know. I've never been to NYC. The famous #19 sandwich always seemed like a Reuben to me, but with slaw instead of sauerkraut. Still fabulous though.
I grew up going to Langers. My dad worked at Botica Del Pueblo across the street for 20 years. And let me tell you as a kid as an adult it’s always the most consistent pastrami I ever had. You should’ve tried the number 19 on sourdough trust me. It’s not a nostalgia thing for me. Langers is hands down the best pastrami in the world.
I’ve never had pastrami. Now I want to try. I don’t even know what to expect lol
Gosh, those pastrami sandwiches looked amazing. I could practically taste them! I am the granddaughter of a Russian Jew, growing up my grandfather would visit a little delicatessen in London and get hot salt beef sandwiches on Jewish rye bread and some Haimisha cucumbers which were divine. Nowadays, I never see them here in the UK which is a tremendous shame as people don't know what they're missing.
On view alone, I'd have preferred the meat at Katz's, but the bread in Langer's. A classic sandwich such as pastrami and rye should not be messed with. It's the food of the gods!
@jaycee672 You'll love this if you go to Langer's, order the #19... the same pastrami on rye, but with a layer of Russian cole slaw as well. And order the in-house craft made soda of the month.
Langer's makes their own bread and pickles too.
@@luisoutumuro424 If I ever get there, I definitely will, Luis. It's 4pm here in the UK and I've yet to eat, seeing that sandwich makes me drool, I'd be all over that like a rabid dog on roadkill atm lol
I love the way they cook the meat ,you buy it in Australia and its totally different not sweet and its dry . To get that flavour and the red i cook it myself the way my mother shown me ,its the only way ill eat pastrami. Or corned beef .out of this world .glad American likes it to.
on my list now
Have you ever had Hershel's Eastside Deli? I remember it being as good, but way cheaper.
I've never been but I've heard of it. It's on the list!
Check out Harolds NY deli in Edison, NJ
You gotta get the #19 at Langers!
Great video thanks! Next time get a slice of cheese cake at Katz and compare to typical traditional west-coast cheese cake. NY cheese cake is unique and remarkably different. Btw Pastrami is now $27 at Katz, I was there last week Oct 2023. One trivia: Katz has been in business since 1888 - thats 135 years!
I respect anyone who has pastrami for breakfast!
Great minds eat alike!
Glad you could go to Langer’s in my city of LA. I’ve been to both and I would chose Langer’s. Bigger menu and better service.
Langer's is next to MacArthur Park, the hood! The restaurant is a holdout from another era. The pastrami is good but also pricey.
Katz's hands down.
But just so you know a couple of guys that used to work at Katz's opened a place in Garfield New Jersey called pastrami Grill & Bistro and they do a pretty good job. At least last time I tried it.
And bear in mind that each cut of meat is different and that it can't come out identical every time.
I'll have to try it soon! I hear Newark also has a pretty well regarded spot
Definitely need to check this place out as I live in Bergen County.
So you've been to both? Why do you think Katz's is better?
But a tender texture is a tender texture. I usually always go for it.
Thanks for that tip I lived in Woodbridge for years & I intend to check out this spot in Garfield when I get back to NJ
You need to try Pastrami Grill Bistro in Garfield, NJ. It's basically the same thing as Katz !
