Phil was pretty dishy back in the day! 🔥 It's so fun to see how young they were and the how rudimentary the technology was. How amazing that they worked together, respected each other, and were able to produce so many episodes of this show for us to enjoy.
Tony was really in his element here. I absolutely adore him. He brought the whole programme to life with his dashing around bringing everybody together and asking intelligent questions. I do miss this exceptional team.
The new hosts have their own presenting style, and will come into their own in time. Tony was a brilliant combination of enthusiastic host and everyman asking good questions that allowed the experts their moments to shine. He wasn't an expert presenting a documentary, he was just passionate about what they were doing and glad to have experts fill in the details for him, and us.
I'm an American, and a retired evolutionary biologist, and I worked for several years on an archaeology survey team as their osteology consultant and field crewmember. I've been watching TT episodes for abut 3 years now on UA-cam, and I love them. and once in a while, I stumble on an older one, and and the original cast is there. It's like running into a group of old friends. Watching TT makes me really miss my archaeology days, even though the world was grueling.
@@TVeldhorst It was physically extremely difficult and taxing, and the work days were long. And I was in very good or even excellent physical condition.
I love watching Phil do flint napping. It's always amazing to see this dude who just rediscovered the methods for making functional stone tools just shooting the shit while strategically banging two rocks together to make something cool.
Even some of the ancient stone tools they find aren't as quality as what he can do. And they did it, presumably almost every day, for every year they had the motor skills to do so during their whole lives. I'm always impressed... I wanna see him try some obsidian!.
Yes indeed. I love the humour and jibing. You can only have that with a team who know each other. Alice Roberts almost certainly has a sense of humour but it humour cant be used when the presenter is visiting dig after dig for a day or two, and interviewing an exhausted dig leader for whom enthusiasm has long worn off after a month or two. the Time Team knew each other and benefiitted from "early days" excitement. Their work revealed what would repay digs lasting months
I’ve been watching Time Team for as long as I can remember- sometime in the 90s I think. I discovered British crop circles at some point then too and it certainly provided me with intelligent fascinating investigations I could never do myself. Now at 76 I still watch every Time Team I can, no matter how many times I’ve seen it. ❤ Thanks Mick, Phil, John and a cast of thousands for brilliant work that is timeless.
That's great! I'm so very lucky to have found this show recently, so even though I've binged every episode that's crossed my path, they're still _new-ish._ I even still find one I haven't seen every now and then. It's fascinating how the show's evolved over the years!
We found a beautiful mammoth tusk fishing on a small island in northern Ontario Canada and donated it to our local highschool back in 1985 . It was in my daughter's history class 30 years later
Well this is an oldie! Phil is looking quite fit, if I do say so. Is that the same hat he always wears but just back when it was new with the spiffy feather?!?! The technology of geo-phys really did revolutionize the field and I love how excited and intelligent and quirky the whole team is...and it is funny that pre-drone era how they had to get an overview of the site.
I always laugh when Phil or Carenza go up in the helicopter to look over the landscape... Now everyday people can use Google Earth to do the same job, or like you say, send up a drone and take aerial photos.
I love Phil Harding, last saw him on a dig at Waterloo where he has matured nicely. My one piece of confusion is how he keeps his hair from constantly getting in his face! Same with the long haired Time Team ladies. I have hair that length and it requires severe clips and braiding for gardening. Digging for archeology is just gardening for bones and rocks?
This brings back memories, not the show but the tech. Lol I remember when that stuff came out and was like, revolutionary compared to the computers etc that we were all using
Tony's narration & the musical selections are great production features. Love & admire the talents of each team member. Amazed at their 3 day accomplishments.
Agreed... Have you seen what the Timeline channel did to these episodes? The editing is done well, but they changed the music to the most _bizarre_ pieces. Sounds like something you'd hear waiting in line at the Harry Potter ride. haha
Thank you very much for the pleasur we can feel with this team working toghether for a réal knowledge and not a "etablishement truth". Thanks very much it's a real pleasur to start the day with such a happy team.
Anybody know what kind of camera they we're using?!? The auto focus is fantastic, the quality is great for the time swing as this surly isn't shot on film
I once found a flint arrowhead on Bex Hill. I was only a child, and I was very disappointed that one side was broken. At the time, it challenged my need to find a perfect one. It was discarded because it had failed in the maker's hand.
Half way through Phil was exposing a Mammoth head and tusks, next he was out of there on his own hitting Flint with a sullen voice -even Tony had a temperate conversation with him. See what you think ?
The way i KNOW this must be season 1 or close when they're saying "let's not get distracted by a mammoth, we need to look for seeds"... no! I want to see the mammoth!!
In the long, deep, trench. Some of the finds obviously (bones, teeth) are ancient... but I truly question any significant value/importance of the wood PLANKS... !!!!!????
These people have no concept of fluvial geomorphology. Over 200,000 years, that river has changed path many, many times. Unless a river is confined by non-erodible rocks. The natural floodplain is demarcated by the high ground flanking it. If where you are has been deprived of it's natural floodplain width by channelization, you really cannot know what is going on.

I agree with you
Glad to know there are others out there who think this.
And how young we were, as well...
they are making more they have already put out 2 more digs go to time team offical
Phil!?! You're easily pleased.

Wow that's pretty cool and now it's in your daughter's history class? Wow
Should have sold it
I'm in Southern Ontario on the escarpment. I would love to find something like that here.. Very difficult in this area. But not unheard of
I am always impressed with Victors art work

Have you tried extra hold pump hair spray?
Mammoths 🦣 are often found while doing construction in Oregon USA too. The current climate here is very similar to that in London as well.
I see Mick & click. RIP dear, dear gent. You are missed.
The best thing is Phil chipping out a handaxe and the usability of the left over flint flakes to do many things
I would recognize Mick's sweater anywhere 😊
Yup, the only man on tv to make his wife's knitting famous and proud to wear every one of them
Look how new Phil’s hat is 😂 I love these old eps…❤
He is on some new archaeology program and got a brand new hat finally! All the other TT crew who are still with us are on the new Time Team.

Wow! They were so young here. I really enjoyed this episode. Personally, I would have kept on the Mammoth tusk myself :P
Thanks for posting
I agree. One of my favorite episodes ♡♡♡
Nostalgic look at the old CRT monitors.
I like Phil and Mick - so intelligent!
This has got to be one of the first episodes!
How could I have never heard of this wonderful show?
Thank yu.
First scoop of the excavator and they find a mammoth tusk. Unbelievable.
I like the intimate close-up shots in this early one.
Wow they introduced everyone back then, even Mr Victor. 🎉
Just a well put together series. Newer productions could take a few tips from these guys. Well done. A+
OMG he's Baldrick again! ❤
Interstate 40 in ARKAnsas uncovered a mammoth while being built. Everyone in DES ARC & Hazen AR gathered to witness digging. wow. Year 1965, I think.
Yep, I remember seeing it at the U of A when studying archeology, and history
I have done an excavation with Earth Watch - a great experience. I did one in Arizona and another in England
my psychologist: "don't worry, tony with long hair does not exist"
me right now : *Cartoonish hearth pounding out of my chest
100 years down the track another bunch of archeologists come along and are excited to find his new flint tool and think it’s Neolithic 😋
Very interesting!!!
Tony with long hair and Phil harding still with a -new -hat. must be a very early episode?

is it one single river or a location of a past junction of two or more water courses.

Also, wasn't having hair nice? Back in the day...
Half way through Phil was exposing a Mammoth head and tusks, next he was out of there on his own hitting Flint with a sullen voice -even Tony had a temperate conversation with him. See what you think ?
He isn't sullen. He's just concentrating on the flint knapping. You have to pay attention while you work the flint or you will wreck it.
Interesting that they were talking about ice ages and very warm ages ?
Good evening everyone
phil would have fitted in really well to the medieval life
