i would like to mention to time team fans that they have a youtube page its called time team official and they are still making the show with new digs its awesome
they've released two so far. It's nice to see Helen, Bridget, Carenza!, Matt, Henry, John, Stewart and Francis. so far missing Racsha, Phil, Baldrick, Guy . . .
@@TheShootist i was blown away by the tech. geophys takes no time at all and the detail is nuts! miss the older folk but they arent getting any younger
They presented evidence that the island was once connected to the mainland, but I think that should also have prompted them to consider that the peninsula could have been significantly larger in the past. The aerial photos and geophys results showed buildings or walls right at the cliff edge, but I think that the cliff edge might have been several meters further away a few thousand years ago. The island would have been more accessible and less cramped during the iron age, making it a less unlikely place for a settlement. A peninsula with natural defences, then a bay or natural port, and a man-made fort on the other side, a pretty cool combination.
For sure, the entire island has lost a lot of land in the past few thousand years. Those sheer vertical cliffs have very little to no talus, meaning they're actively being worn down even today, and the site on the mainland is the same way. One can only imagine what it used to look like or how much more land there was back in the bronze or iron age, perhaps they made stairs going down to the ocean or into a bay where they moored their little fleet. Also, what sort of disasters and hardships did the inhabitants repeatedly endure over the years when part of their peninsula sheared off and took entire buildings with it, or cut them off from the mainland? When the land bridge collapsed is likely to also be when this island was abandoned, which would've been somewhere between the Roman era and the 19th century. Either way, I bet it wouldn't be all that difficult to gather finds from the talus of the island where entire sections of earth fell to the water, though they'd probably be battered up pretty good.
the only downside I've found with the new Time Team is the presenter, whom I find to be both too breathy in speech and very low energy compared to Baldrick.
Come to think of it, you're right. The interaction between team members seems missing in the new ones too. They don't have any speculation, side bets or predictions about what will be there. That kept me in wonderful suspense.
The new time team have only done two digs so far, and the second one was significantly more entertaining to watch than the first one. If they keep up the trajectory, the third one will be almost as good as the old time team. 😉
Phil getting Tony’s head with that tennis ball attack made my day….I miss so many of the old faces…but so glad those two were still screwing around like children during this episode…it warms my heart….time team has evolved…and I’m here for all of it…
I walked the Pembrokeshire Coast Path a few years ago and the terrain looks very familiar that this episode brought back memories. Phil, Francis, Raksha and Matt really held these episodes together. The fun, joviality, cameraderie are missing from the new series. Francis's passion and enthusiasm are outstanding!
Out in the middle like it is perhaps it was a multipurpose place being a lookout and warning station - bon fire on the island to warn the mainland. One never knows. If foe brings in a fleet up goes the alarm. Could be given long before ships got to them.
When he said, “who would want to live there?”, who else put up their hand? lol But for their purposes, surely with their budget they could’ve got a helicopter?
I think between the winds, landing area problems, possibly disturbing open archeological trenches, and the daily cost of a qualified pilot with gas probably not as good an option as it might seem. If you mean to shuttle back and forth to the sight. I love watching the American Coast Gaurd helicopter rescue too and you learn quickly that even there amazing pilots don't like getting near sea cliffs at all for many reasons, not that they never have to save people off such cliff sides.
@@riverlady982 Landing a heli with the kind of mechanical turbulence an area like that produces would make that zipline feel like a great option. I suppose it would be possible to designate a good landing site away from active digs, it's not a terribly bad surface to land on, but safety considerations and cost were likely the biggest factors. Big enough factors that just one of them would probably shut down that idea. They had the budget to hire a heli on several occasions, but that's all part of making it a good show and providing perspective to the viewers. One hour of flight time is relatively cheap at $1-2K depending on the heli, but constantly ferrying back and forth for three days would be quite costly, not to mention the crew being stuck out there if the heli couldn't fly due to weather.
I wonder how long it took the camera operator at 9:02 to work out how to get the angles and lighting so MaryAnn’s face reflected on the screen. I know that Mick Aston did not like the newer format as it was style over substance, and she seems to have been used as a bit of flim flam, never wielding a trowel in earnest!
Choppers are expensive. In other shows they have said they could only get them for a small part of one day. A zipline would be much cheaper than having a chopper on call to carry people across at random times all day long.
How did the Ancients get over on the Inaccessible island? Was it by chopper or zip line or boat with rocket launched ropes and hooks? How ? Did they have a bridge?
Could be to hard to land there / no place to start the flight close enough. There were other episodes when they used helicopters, so I don't think it was too expensive.
One hour of filming an active dig and the surrounding area at $1-2K/hr isn't that much to cover, three days of constantly ferrying people back and forth to the island would take a big chunk out of their budget though. Plus, that's a terrible place to fly a heli, the constant wind coming in from the ocean hits those cliffs and you get what's called mechanical turbulence, which can be a serious flight risk. Adding to that, the crew would be stuck out there on the island if the heli was grounded for whatever reason. Between the wild ride you'd get from the heli and the amount of money you'd pay, that zipline looks a lot more feasible.
Ah, not my favorite period of TimeTeam. The intrusion of the not-terribly-useful Ms Ochoa and Mr Langland (who I just love in his various farming series with Ruth and Peter) seems so painful in hindsight. They hang about and ask Tony-ish questions, but not as well as Tony does; and they faff about with trowels in a way that seems to prompt concern on the faces of Raksha and Matt. Francis Pryor and the invaluable Phil Harding keep things on the rails... but what a struggle to do so.
Mary Ann was obvious brought on board for the same reason 7 of 9 was brought into Star Trek Voyager. Apart from dressing like a peakey blinder in later episodes, Alex's sycophantic blather lowers the intelligent quotient of the program a tad.
OMG! Marianne says some green grass/grain in the raw tastes like French Fries! Do you realize what a fortune you have stumbled upon? Satisfy the American and now world craving for taste of fried potatoes? With a healthy, green grass! If you folks at Time Team don't exploit this, I will, or some other clever bastard, ignorant of other important values like our archeology. - Jump on it! You'll get the Queen or Prince Philip backing this! - if not the Dragon's Den or US' Shark Tank investors. Bon Chance! Good luck. Thanks for the inside scoop! Marianne would be most attractive person for promoting it, too. (at approx. 28 min. mark)
Careful advertising that, the US might invade the island with ketchup and ranch dressing in side holsters after sending in cruise missiles filled with salt.

Miserable weather but what a beautiful landscape.

I love how they showed the phallus as a religious item when maybe a few women and maybe men where having fun.

welcome to the phallus island.
