I remember watching this the night it was broadcast, I hadn’t heard it was going to be a show entirely full of Peter Cook characters, it was an absolute joy from start to finish, when he was on form there was no one to touch him. And I am the pub bore who’ll still say “it’s all about the three M’s Motivation Motivation Motivation after a few drinks.

Jason surely you should say Motivation 4 times and then say the 3 M's.

I saw it the night it was on. It was my introduction to the greatness and genius of Peter Cook. How strangely different things were in those days.

And they said 'Peter Cook couldn't act'! This oafish character is a creation of genius, like Sir Les Patterson. Latchley absolutely inhabits Cook for eight minutes. Thank you for this, never shown in Oz.

Cook is on fire here! The idea that his talent dwindled during later years is nonsense, when he wanted to he could still go down that comedic river and dredge up the most amazing stuff.

You never heard of Chris Morris?
Get hold of the Why Bother CD. It is absolutely beautiful. Cook is interviewed as Sir Arthur Streeb Greebling, by Morris. Morris invents the questions on the spot, as ridiculous as they are, and Cook just flows with the most amazing ideas!
You may even be able to listen to it on here!

The thing is, this was all off the cuff. Just give him the idea and watch him flow. the more he gets into the character, the more hilarious it becomes. no rehearsals, no script writers.....pure genius. RIP. Peter. gone far too soon.

I think a lot of the stuff we hear about Cook's performances being 'improvised' is a bit of a myth. I've no doubt that these appearances on Anderson's show, as indeed on 'Parkinson', were to a large degree rehearsed and scripted, though they're great to watch anyway.

Actually Morris edited the tapes down from much longer recordings, although it's true that he was one of the best comedy partners Cook ever had in his later life because he brought his own persona to it instead of just being a stooge, like Clive Anderson in this video.

Apparently Peter Cook was a Tottenham fan and Peter Shreeve ( the manager at the time ) was a big mate.
This is satirical about the intensity of all football managers and their hopes and way of doing things is expressed in Alan's approach.
Most women would think that 11 men chasing a ball of wind around a pitch is no big deal but football
and teams has always been a metaphor for many people's lives.
And the vast majority of Managers come from the Working Classes ( this is not cricket) so it is authentic passion.
Favourite: Bill Shankly - next Cloughie.
The Managers now are basically populist drones who lack real character and are happy to small talk to the media and give them what they want.
    Two exceptions:
Honorary Scouser Jurgen Klopf and of course Fergie ( even though I am a sympathetic Blue).
Cook delivers a very good parody and he was cynical but very funny.
