  • When the Model Y launched in Australia, my Dad didn't hesitate to put an order in for a Performance... but in the months after, he started to doubt his decision. Let's hear why...
    **Whilst I don't agree with his decision, it makes for an interesting debate that many from his generation would rally behind.

    I would hope that for around $180-200k the Merc would feel more "premium". Each to their own but wow spending nearly 200k on the V8 sound and stitching on the interior is something I could never justify.
    I wonder if it's also still seen as a status symbol for his generation, also which in his circles a Tesla would be ridiculed?

    Good interview. I’m 70. Grew up with all the muscle car sound and looks of the 60’s and 70’s. Had a 1969 Mustang GT fastback that would be the only car I would ever buy again a second time. Love my Y Tesla. For the sound aspect I can record that noise and play it on my Bluetooth and drive around if I want. But the quietness of a Tesla is way better. You should have asked what the gas costs are. Anyway hope your dad enjoys it

    Another nice video, thanks Ryan. I'm the same age as your dad and have 3 sons all around your age, so can appreciate where you father is coming from (familiarity, nostalgia, premium finish), but I'm also cognisant of the benefits of electrification. Today I drive a luxury 2008 VW Passat CC 125TDI diesel turbo. Cost around $80k when it was new. The engineering, fit, finish, comfort and tech for the day was outstanding, and has stood the test of time. I've just ordered a 2023 Model Y (will pick up in 4-6 weeks) and will sadly have to let my VW go. The 'why' will have to wait until I pop out and see you one of these days, but I still have my road and dirt motorbikes to satisfy my desire for noise and fumes :) I grew up with dirt bikes, mates with a Torana SLR 5000, a Charger, a Monaro GTS, and a Commodore SSS (Aussie 70's muscle cars), and watching Peter Brock, Allan Moffit and others race at Mt Panorama / Bathurst 1000. Letting go of nostalgia and embracing electrification is hard for us who are from the Baby Boomer generation. If Tesla made something that has the fit and finish of yesterday's luxury cars, complete with an external sound system that gave us the V8 rumble/burble at the touch of a switch, then I'd be much happier being "all in" :)

I do appreciate, and to some extent understand, the emotional connection to the sound/rumble of a V8 - it is a visceral sensation. Each to their own - the change is coming and we are slowly but surely moving from the early adopters into the early mainstream thanks to Tesla, BYD, Polestar etc. We just need a good EV ute in Oz to convince the tradies, and the Tesla Semi (or similar) wouldn't hurt either... 🙂

    Most people get vehicles based on the souls the car had. A V8 would be the best option for petrolheads, it has so much souls and excitement than the Tesla. Not trying to mock Teslas but, it's what most people don't get about petrol vehicles. Petrol vehicles have sound that brings many joy from the engine.
    But, in many ways Mercedes-Benz was a good option. It's a powerful V8. It is rather an exciting car. If I were given Tesla and A Mercedes. I would pick the Merc. The Merc is a living legend, merc is well known for the engines.
    Petrol vehicles have a lot of souls, I think EV seems like it is being driven by a ghost. I can't lie, petrol vehicles have more torque than the Tesla.
    Petrol cars usually have more torque than an EV.
    EV are quicker but not fast on the acceleration. It depends on the person's ability to think about the car they like.

  • @kristjansimmul4280
    @kristjansimmul4280 7 місяців тому

    Your dad made some fair points there. Though I couldn't help but notice, he seemed to mostly put emphasis on the "sound" factor of a V8. Sadly, like many people who are ASD, I can never understand that. Mainly because I suffer sensory sensitivity to such sounds like that which comes from a V8 vehicle. It can be traumatising at times. But your dad does seem like a good gentleman, so hopefully he is one of the few V8 owners who would make every attempt to minimise how much "roar" he lets out of his vehicle in public places, in case a sensory sensitive person is nearby.
    Also, I'm sure he is aware that one day he will have to let go of that desire for the sound of a V8. We all go through phases of something, that really appeals to senses. But as the world and our society constantly changes, at some point, we all have to change with it. Even if that means letting go of something that has always appealed to us.

    Hey Ryan. When I first heard your dad was cancelling his Model Y order for a V8 Mercedes I was shocked. I love my minimalist interior now but it definitely isn’t premium and when you come from a nice premium interior to a Tesla like I did it’s definitely a trade off. I was happy to do this as the benefits of owning an EV massively outweigh this. I do now look at interiors like the Mercedes with a massive amount of buttons and laugh when people think Teslas are complicated. Tesla does need to make some improvements to things like suspension when someone is spending 80-90k on a LR or performance version. This is why I always recommend the RWD 3 and Y as they are better value for money.

    Why is this comment section full of crying, coping, stop oil muppets 😂😂😂. Search up the environmental footprint of an EV specifically the production, also search how those batteries have to be disposed of. From somebody majoring in electronics yes Tesla has some cool gadgets, but that is all they have, EV's aren't one bit less toxic than combustion cars, they just polute in ways less known to the common people

    • @RyanCowan
      @RyanCowan  7 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for the comment mate. I think it's important to note that EV's produce more emissions to manufacture, however they quickly make up for it once they are on the road. The life time impact of an EV is much less than ICE for several reasons. Even if charged from the grid they are still about 4x more efficient at power conversion. Tesla is definitely ahead of the game when it comes to recycling, currently recycling 95% of all raw materials for new battery packs.
