Mary, please take some time to look at cardano, an open source decentralised blockchain. There is a content provider, Dapp central. He has a brilliant interview with a musician, who has some software in development called Newmn.
No flashing lights, no pyrotechnics, no warbling autotune, no miming, no revealing costumes, no dancers, no special effects - simply a great vocalist and a great guitarist in a natural setting giving a superb performance. Applause! 👏👏👏👏
My wife passed away two years ago and this song made it’s way onto my playlist I would listen to everyday walking. Mary, your version brought tears to my eyes. Thank you.
Mary's husky voice just works perfectly in this song. She's one of the few women who can pull it off. That was an amazing performance -- both guitar and singer! Loved it!!
How lovely ... No pitch correction, no auto-tune, just Mary Spender's natural sensibilities, with the perfect guitar accompaniment, splendidly catching the essence of the song with a deep-gal's warm--dare I say super-sexy--tone that makes this heart melt ... Thanks for that!
Released 44 years ago. And on one of the first dates I went on with then to be wife back in 1980 we saw a short film of Dire Straits before the main feature at the cinema during which they played this and Sultans of Swing. This is one of the best covers I've heard. It amazes me that young people like you are still discovering and enjoying music from well before you were both born.
Mary, i know you are a singer songwriter but I wish you would do an LP or even EP of Dire Straits covers you sing them so well with your own spin on them.
Damn this version is good… Nathaniel, brother your playing has so much sensitivity and Mary your voice was a dream. Hope there’s more to come from you two :)
Beautiful voice and beautiful playing. I love Dire Straits and this is one of my abs favs. Tunnel of Love, Telegraph road, Romeo and Juliet, Brothers in arms is my top of the straits
Mary the not yet crowned Queen of Dire Straits covers, remember Sultans of Swing with Leo Moracchioli.😊 Nathaniel on the other side one of the best guitarists of our times.
To be honest Mary, I’d forego playing the guitar if Nathaniel was in the room too! Amazing version of probably one of the all time British guitarists of our lifetime.
Loving the lower register of your voice Mary. Very smokey and characterful and it makes the climb up and back at the end very special. As said elsewhere... brilliant interpretation and arrangement with no need for frills. 🦘
Great rendition. Nathaniel's fingers are superb. I've wanted to say before that I personally like you lower voice the best. LOVED it in this song. Nathaniel makes you smile.
Great stuff, beautifully done. While we're on the Straits, how about doing Down to the Waterline, or Lady Writer? Two more Knopfler masterpieces! Agree that Mary's husky voice works great on this song.
Mary, Dire Straits always seems so under appreciated. I have always loved this song; it’s so sad but beautiful. And you do it great justice. This is a great version and I think you for unlocking an old memory of younger days.
Listening to this, I forgot the guitar was a steelie... so smooth, Nathaniel and Mary alike. And I finally caught the movie ref... Nino Rota was a legend in his time; I don't know if Mary will be a legend in hers but I hope so... though I hope above all that it's always as much _fun_ for her and her musical partners as it sounded like they were having there at the end...
@@hansemannluchter643 Would you believe I'm 107? Naw, but I'm old enough to have been in London not long after "Sultans of Swing" came out. I'm so old (- how old are you?) that I can hardly discern that Swing is syncopated, it just sounds right to me.
Ms. Spender, I love your voice in this lower register. It can be difficult to differentiate notes down low. Your singing is very musical and precise. I enjoyed this as much as I did your collaboration with Rick Beato on Jim Croce's "Operator ..." Mr. Murphy, I congratulate you on your fine instrument and your fine skill. Tart cherry notes of steel strings contrasted with chocolate richness of contralto voice. What a lovely sensibility for a Sunday morning. Thank you.
There are so many things about this video that I love that it's hard to know where to begin. First, there's no auto-tune. Second, there's no pitch correction. Third, she's not miming. From everything I can tell, it's an honest to god real, live, recording. Such a rarity nowadays. Finally, I love that damn mandolin (?). Whatever it is, it's beautiful. That brass. Oh, the brass. I'd willingly over pay for that, and since I can't play an instrument, I'd proudly showcase it in the middle of the room. But it needs to be played. So, the first person that could play it would become the proud owner ❤❤❤
@@Frank-Lee-Speeking Its not a Dobro. Dobros have what is known as a spider cone and a much fatter sweeter sound (think c&w slide). Its just a resonator; biscuit cone resonator to be precise. In the style of a National rather than Dobro. Couldnt see the headstock well enough to tell what it is for sure, though it looks a lot liek the National Shield logo. I am guessing a National Resophonic.
Love this DS song...great rendition, MS. Don't know the guitarist but he is excellent...good-looking too...think I'll stop now. Seldom are the lyrics written for a one-off from a classic listenable...this one was...modern-day update. ❤
As Billy said, we love you just the way you are! My 2 cents, I think so many people enjoy vids of shows we can’t get to even shot with an iPhone. We all realize that it’s a poor substitute for being there, but without that exposure, or by extension YT or other social media, we’d be missing out on artists we’d otherwise never know about. I definitely would not want my son’s face plastered all over the internets, so I’m in 100% agreement on that (and he’s a drummer that has played on some decent sized stages). But I for one am grateful to see some shows I can’t get to, though I get to go to some live too. Happy Birthday, and again we love you brother! 🍻
Beautiful rendition of a fine song. They say Mark Knopfler tells a story and let's his guitar sing. Your version encaptured that style perfectly, holding your loveley singing voice back just so, soaring up only occasionally. I appreciate that we can actually understand the lyrics. I love what you do.
One of my all time favorite Dire Straits songs--this one and Tunnel of Love. Your voice does it *such* justice! Still need to get me a dobro--that and a banjo are two strings I ain't got in my collection. But aye gods, you knocked this one out of the park.
I love that you love Mark Knopfler. There's no better artist to follow and adore. I love him too. I can't imagine life without him. What an amazing artist!
This is sooo good. Best interpretation of Romeo & Juliet ever. A great song, two great musicians, a brilliant performance. Please Please PLEASE make more music together. ❤
Wow! I've been following both of you for years and to see this collaboration was magical! You and Nathaniel should do lots more together you've both got Insane musicality and chemistry! You nailed it Bravo 👏🏻 🎸🤘🏻🔥🔥🔥
This takes me straight back to a rainy day in 1978 when I bought this album....still IMHO Dire Straits' best album. But then you two take me back to the present with this enigmaticly beautiful rendition. Just two people playing in perfect harmony, and like you say, you've got it.
She's great.... Like the sultans of swing cover as well, frog leap metal version. Heard it for the first time driving back from Alabama after Christmas. Had to listen to it again and was pretty blown away.
Mary.....this is what you were made for.....beautiful guitar behind and (at least for me) a story told with the emotion that makes the hair on my arm stand up.....:) This is what I strive for when I play.....
Mary - this is the best bit I've ever heard you perform. What an awesome collaboration. So cool that you and Nathan treated this song with the reverence it deserves. A lot of emotion coming through. Ya'll gotta do more music together. Superb.
I can’t believe I was being cynical and almost didn’t click. The only cover i ever liked was The Killers version but your voice and the great guitar playing by Nathaniel made this really good. This really hit just right. I have loved this song for so long, and i am very protective but this was so good! Thank you
Speechless, this is actually my favourite Dire Straits song, and you both nailed it, I’ve actually nearly got up and applauded, well done to both of you!👏👏👏👏👏👏.
Just superb, a faultless performance from you both. Just one thing you forgot... The finger click....!! Seriously, I loved it almost as much as Mary's Sultans of Swing video a while back. Thank you

Thanks for having me Mary! Had a great time recording this.
What shall we do next?! 👀😂
You guys rule
Amazing version! Follow up? The song that came to me ( similar style), is 'Landslide' by Fleetwood Mac/Stevie Nicks.
An album? Please....
ANY & EVERY thing.
👍
A Chris Whitley song maybe... since you already have the resonator at hands.. ;)

it was something special

Mark knopfler's Melody's aren't really that hard to sing because knopfler.
However, I agree that this is an awesome cover.
Mary and Nathaniel need to make a record together. Fantastic combination!
The genius of Mr. Knopfler beautifully covered by Mary and Nathaniel.
Thank you so much.
Occasionally, the right song and the right musician connect. Thanks Mary and Nathan...

Went to see him in toronto at the skydome, he hit all of em out of the park violining that guitar.
Mary has that silky smooth voice, love how she phrases the song and takes you on journey with her and Nathaniel. Well done!
Finally the most talented people on UA-cam are blessing us with a performance. Thanks guys!
Nathaniel is phenomenal!
The way he plays “a lot” of that song with no fingers on the fret board, just to make sure it looks that easy, makes me love her voice more!
That was beautiful , Mark would be proud of that
I've always liked this song, and this is a terrific performance of it.
