    I noticed you put 4 strips per hive. I have been putting 2. I have not tested. I have only seen people use 2. Still new to this mixture. Have you ever tried 2 strips. Tomorrow i am going to use 4. Very good video.

      Hi, yes I use 4, per deep brood box, 3 for a 3/4 box. So a double deep with brood in both boxes gets 8 strips. The maker of the cardboard strips I use recommends 3. Each strip can only absorb so much OA and the total OA you put in the hive seems to be an important factor. Cheers Chris

    Thanks for your updated info. Do you hang the strips after soaking or do they go directly into the hive?

    • @KiwiWildman
      @KiwiWildman  Рік тому

      Hi Trevor, they go directly in the hive, by the time they get there most of the fresh liquid has drained off them and they are damp, but not sopping wet. Cheers Chris

    Chris where do you get those stripes do you make them. Are they corraged cardboard?

    • @KiwiWildman
      @KiwiWildman  Рік тому

      Hi Ronald, they are produced here in New Zealand by Beequip NZ. No, they aren't corrugated, it is solid cardboard. I also have used homemade strips and I am currently trying out Swedish sponges. I did a video (Ep 45) comparing the three. Cheers Chris

      I tried the Swedish sponges this spring I haven't tested but I think they worked very well. I guess I wouldn't be trying that any more 🤷 not legally anyway.

    Thank you very much. How many days are the applied strips effective and at what period do you replace them?

    • @KiwiWildman
      @KiwiWildman  Рік тому +1

      I put them in 3 times a year, spring, mid summer and autumn. The mid summer treatment is very important, it prevents mite levels climbing too high over summer and causing mite damage which the autumn treatment won't cure. I leave them there until the bees chew them out or until the next treatment. I am not sure how long they are effective for, but it doesn't really matter because I leave them in there anyway. Cheers Chris

    Hi ya, i read somewhere when making the strips you have to leave them overnight in a hot room with a heater left going so the room temp is constantly at 35 Degrees, do you do that?

    Hello friend. what is the formula of this recipe with oxalic acid. for how kosher is it and how many days does the strip last and how long does it take to dry in the sun. You can use these strips more than once. Thank you respect

    • @KiwiWildman
      @KiwiWildman  Рік тому

      Hi, watch Ep 48 on my channel to see the recipe, I don't know if it is Kosher. I treat my bees 3 times a year, Spring, Summer and Autumn to keep the mite levels low. I leave them in until the next treatment. Often the bees have torn them down and removed them on their own, if not I take them out and dispose of them when I put the next treatment in. Don't dry the strips before you use them, just let them drain and use them damp. You can only use them once. Cheers Chris

    Its posibile to put cardboard strips on the top of the frames like swedish sponges ,since if you put between the frames
    they ruined the combs ?

    • @KiwiWildman
      @KiwiWildman  5 місяців тому +1

      I don't, because I want the strips down close to the brood where the mites are emerging from under the capped brood as the new bees emerge. The strips don't do much damage to the comb, no different to synthetic strips in my opinion. The bees tear them down and remove them eventually. I would rather accept what little impact they have in return for a more effective treatment. If laying treatments across the top was as effective then that is how we would be told to apply synthetic strips. The reason swedish sponges are laid on top is that is the only way to get them in the hive. It isn't practical to try to drape them down into the brood. And they are only really effective when laid between two boxes of brood. They don't work so well if you are running a single brood box. But if you try laying the cardboard strips on top of the frames and it works for you, let me know, I am always open to new ways of doing things, as long as they work :)

    What kind of cardstock do you use and in what sizes?

    • @KiwiWildman
      @KiwiWildman  Рік тому

      Hi, I buy the cardboard strips from a commercial bee supply store so I don't know the details of what sort of cardstock it is. They are about 25 mm wide and 400 mm long. Whatever you choose to use, you have to make sure it is food safe. This is the local New Zealand supplier that I get them from. He ships them over seas by the pallet load. beequip.nz/collections/oxalic-acid-solutions/products/beequip-strips Cheers Chris

    Could you please share a recipe for 100 hives

    • @KiwiWildman
      @KiwiWildman  Рік тому

      Hi, the recipe in this video is for about 70 strips. The number of strips you need for 100 hives depends on whether they are single deep or double deep brood boxes. I put 4 strips per brood box. If you need 400 strips (ie your 100 hives are single brood boxes) you will have to make up a mix that is 6 times bigger than the first recipe in this video - 3 kg of OA, 4.5 litres of Glycerine. You can go up to 3.5 kg of OA if you want, some say that it better. If you need 800 strips then make up two batches. Cheers Chris

    Hello. Please, can glycerin be replaced with vegetable oil in this recipe

    • @KiwiWildman
      @KiwiWildman  8 місяців тому

      I haven't ever tried that so I would only be guessing. Given that a failed treatment leads to dead colonies, if you do try it, don't put it in too many hives. Better to do experiments on small numbers at first, and then only if you can cope with losing them if the experiment fails. My advice is stick to what others have found works, ie use glycerin. It is food safe and this recipe has been well proved to be effective, especially if used in conjunction with OA vaporization. Incidently, I have bumped up the OA/Glycerin mix now to 50/50 by weight

    can you tell me the formula for 100 strips

    • @KiwiWildman
      @KiwiWildman  Рік тому

      Just scale up the recipe for 60-70 strips shown in the video by 50%. So 750 grams of OA and 1125 mls of glycerine.
