- Increasing my caravan awning retraction tension, while keeping all my fingers attached.
Our caravan awning tension has been horribly lethargic ever since we bought the van, and has only got worse over time. I increased the closing tension by disconnecting the barrel at the brake end, rotating it and refitting in much the same way we re-tension a holland house blind
This is an absolutely brilliant video. You have done well very clearly explained and demonstrated with good warnings about the hazard involved. Thank you very much.😊🇦🇺
Thanks David, glad it helped mate. Cheers
I cannot tell you how much money you saved me!!
I have a 1988 Glendale and was desperate to save her awning (it's in excellent shape). My estimates ranged from a couple hundred to a couple thousand dollars. Most recommended replacing the whole thing. Your video was the first one I watched...and the only one I watched. I fixed it on my own, in about 20 minutes. Thank you so very much! 🤗
Hey MaggPye, im glad the vid helped.
Legendary! 5 min job, worked a treat as ours was getting sloppy.
Thank you so much because of your video we were able to bring the life back to our awning which saved us a bit of money
Glad you found it helpful
Just tensioned my Silverline awning after watching this video. Very well explained. Thanks heaps
Thanks for the video. Worked fantastic. I had to roll it up halfway multiple times, though not just one rotation as my awning lost all spring tension when it came off in a storm. Your method is great!
Hey Terry, if you add more than one roll you should consider giving the spring at the other end love so the brake end isnt overloaded. Cheers
This video was a great help , it only took me less that 5 mins to retention my jayco awning, thanks 🙏
Great write up. I need to do this on my 2016 Silverline. Thank you for the step by step process. Cheers
Cheers William, I'm glad you found it useful
You are brilliant!! We bought a replacement awning from Carefree, installed it but just could not get the tension up to the strength we needed for the awning to roll in correctly.(As you said - probably just old - 2007 Jayco) Watched your video, followed your directions - WORKED LIKE A CHARM!!!! Thank you so much!
Hey Lori, I glad you found it useful and saved you paying to have it done 👍
Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou, my Carefree on 2006 Jayco was in even worse shape due to other issues. 1/2 hr and 3 rolls of 3 done. no body damage and works better than ever
Im glad it helped. Cheers
Good job and you still have all of your fingers...that's a win win
The risks I take for UA-cam fame. Ha
Just another note for you, maybe I didn't watch to the very end! I just re-tensioned mine yesterday and the one thing I did notice was that the other end is also tensionable, but has no locking mechanism to hold the tube in place whilst you turn it. This end needs to be done with care as you have described, but also needs to be done. I believe that when fitting initially it needs 14 turns for correct tension. I had my fabric replaced a year ago and they have likely not tensioned it enough. I did one turn ant the braked end and 3 turns at the other end and it's all good now. Thanks again for your video.
Hey Colin. I deliberately left tensioning the other end off because its a little more tricky and potentially dangerous. Im pitching to folk searching UA-cam for tips and i dont want anyone to injure themselves. The std number of installations rotations goes out the window after the springs have been in service, and each spring will fatigue at different rates. One turn on the brake end is within reason, any more and as youve done both ends will require attention. Cheers mate
Yep learnt this lesson this week - had to undo the other end and it spun and caused my hand some grief and bruising - be careful of the non braked end.
@@mattyP_7428 Ouch Matt. The non braked end has a small pin hole a nail of similar can fit through to lock off the spring, isnt as user friendly as the braked end.
I just installed a new roller and came here to learn how to add a bit more tension, so thanks for the video. As for the other end it has a hole you need to line up and put a pin in it. Mine came from the factory with a cotter pin in it and a zip tie to hold the lock end from unlocking. So put a pin in the other end and roll it in a turn and install, then pull the pin.
This method seems to work but it hasn't provided even tension at both ends. The proper method is to wind each end with even turns before placing back on the arms . Winding each each end back to Zero tension then rewind to approximately 15 to 18 turns before replacing on arms.
The video isnt intended to be commercial instructional rebuild of an awning, just of a quick, easy and single handed method for folk with basic skills to relatively safely add just a little bit more tension to a tired awning.
Thanks so much for this video. Worked like a charm.
Awesome Mike, glad you found it useful
Brilliant!
Thanks Michelle, im glad youve found it useful 👌
Brilliant. Thanks so much. 👏👏👏
thanks mate, really excellent video
Cheers Colin, glad you got some value from it
Excellent thanks.
Thanks Mitch
Whatever you do make sure you smack it with your bare hands as many times as you can I just see if you can make it go around while you’re messing around with what you’re trying to mess with
Thanks mate I have the same van,I need to do the same 🤙
Hey Kakol, Im glad its of use. Best wishes
@@Vagare I'm yet to have a crack at it yet lol
Thanks. Did you adjust the other end also. If so how did you do it
The other end of the roller just spins freely on a simple spindle mount, there's nothing else going on at that other end.
@@Vagare My awning has 2 springs one on each end
I think your awning is like a garage door. One spring holds tension so it doesn’t come crashing down or out. The other spring is the one he adjusted for lifting or taking it back up so your not lifting the whole weight of the door or in this case getting it to roll the awning nice and smooth
You need to learn to count it appeared you twisted it more than once but hey I was so anxious to see you lose a finger but I wasn’t really counting
Any advice for an awning the rolls loose on one end?
Hey Leigh. Loose how, the vinyl or the roller ??
Boring
Sorry. I also juggle ???
why don't you just move to another video, and not commenting ???
