  • In this video I take a close look at the capabilities of OM System's OM-1 camera for video work. In the past almost all of the video footage seen on my channel has been captured with small cameras. Such as GoPro, DJI Osmo and Pocket 2 and various iPhone models. I've attempted to use Olympus equipment such as the E-M1 mk2 and E-M5 mk3 for video B-roll in the past, but been unable to avoid excessive camera movement and, for the most part, produced footage too shaky to make much use of it.
    So I've tolerated poor dynamic range and difficulties in grading footage on previous landscape photography videos, in favour of stable and smooth footage. Now I have the new OM System OM-1 camera I test it here to decide whether or not I can reply on it in future when making hiking and landscape photography videos for my channel.

    Hi David, great video mate. I returned from your beautiful island on Saturday after a great week, especially weather wise. It was a holiday with my wife and dog primarily and photo trip secondly, if that so I never got to visit most places I wanted to and even those I did I really didn’t get many photos I could say were even near good, most were down right awful and I’m so disappointed in myself. Went up around Ellin’s Tower where I did get a few keepers, all handheld though but I decided to treat it more of a recce than looking to get anything of note. Due to a Google Maps cock up, trying to send us down a farm track to get to the beach at Aberffraw we ended up at the Church in the Sea, the dog loved it around there and so did I, my photos on the other hand were bad to say the least, managed a trip to Llanddwyn but it was too near high tide to go on the island, plus, it was packed, I mean absolutely manic so every photo I tried to get had someone running in front of it.
    Anyway, as you know i mainly shoot Street, but I’m trying to really do more and more land and seascapes and hope to have a drive down some time in October, maybe sooner as the Heather seems to be out in force already.
    Look forward to your next instalment and I’ll be watching Gary’s video in the morning with it being a long one, should be fun.

      Hi, thanks so much for watching and taking the time to leave such generous feedback.
      At the time I made this video I was using the 3-Legged-Thing "Ellie", which had been on my previous camera, the E-M1 mk2. The base plate is small enough to allow access to the battery and by offsetting the vertical element it creates a handy handle and still allows access to the cable sockets. This L bracket comes in 2 specifications, with and without a built-in Peak Design Capture Clip (v3) compatible plate. Mine was the one with the PD element as I use that on various backpack shoulder straps and other bag locations.
      Whilst this L-bracket was perfectly usable, it was a workaround in the absence of any specific OM-1 L-bracket being available on the market. Smallrig do make a cage for this camera, but that didn't allow me to easily adapt it for the PD clip. Also it add quite a bit of weight to the camera, and it's quite expensive for what it offers. Although, I can see that particular rig being useful in the event that you are using the camera extensively for video work and you need to mount lighting, monitors, microphones etc.
      However, 3-Legged-Thing recently released a specific L bracket for the OM-1 which I have purchased and found to be perfect. Not hugely expensive, extremely well-made, adaptable for the PD clip, and in many ways better than the bracket which I was using back when I made this video. You will find full details of all my equipment including this new L bracket on my website at: dgriff.gallery/gear/
      Really hope this is helpful. 😊👍

      @TimberGeek 2 роки тому

      @@DGriffGallery Indeed, I remember when you made the switch.
      People spend a lot of time talking about camera bodies but it seems to me that ultimately it's lenses that drive our buying decisions. I started with a D7000 because of native support for a couple of old lenses we already had from ~1980.
      I suspect if Mamiya, Pentax or anyone else had native support for M42 in the digital age I'd be out there shooting with all my ancient 35mm SLR glass.

    Having seen a few of your excellent videos today, which for some reason I appear to have missed until now. I was interested in hearing your comments about the Olympus OM 1. I am somewhat surprised and confused by the range of feelings and intensity of the ongoing debate raging about the micro four thirds system. On the one hand, you have those who seem determined to criticise and undermine the system at every opportunity, claiming it is only for ‘amateurs’; then you have those who are prepared to defend the MFT system almost to the death and finally you have people like yourself who capture outstanding professional level images and don’t care what anyone else feels about the system. I should be very interested to hear your views about why you feel the system seems to generate so much debate, heat and controversy! Alun

      I think to some extent that when the format was introduced it was fair to say that as a young technology it had some significant failings, which have been more than improved upon with more recent equipment. So as far as I’m concerned these days, there really isn’t any debate to be had it’s just a matter of personal preference in a field of different systems which offer different advantages and disadvantages and you pick the one which suits you best. No need for a big debate. To be fair, when I’m out and about with friends who have larger systems they are often quite jealous of my lightweight and small equipment bag! 🙂👍

    Hi David
    maybe you have some advice for me. You've been shooting with the OM-1 for 2 months now. I'm thinking of switching from the EM 1 MKII. However, I only take photos. Would you say the change has brought you something? Do you use the in-camera ND filters? Do you use the tripod less?
    Best Andreas

    • @DGriffGallery
      @DGriffGallery  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Andreas. Yes, it's a big step up from the E-M1 mk2 in many ways. The live ND works really well up to about ND32. AT ND64 you'll get smoother results with a filter. The menus are far better, and the EVF and rear screen are much clearer and easier to use for checking images. The processor is faster and shooting fast burst such as ProCapture for waves is better. Image quality is exceptional for M4/3. I wouldn't go back to my EM-1 after using the OM-1 😊👍

      @@jiml989 Hi Jim. Yes to some extent. At the lower NDs images are indistinguishable from using physical filters. Up to about ND16.
