    Great videos, very helpful! I recommend that if your cam came in a kit, check to see if there are new seals, retainers, etc. with it. I swapped just the springs and then found all the other bits in my kit. Going back through and doing the springs again ha ha

    Regarding lifters. If you have an older engine, just goto a store and buy some 1/4 in alloy tube(like a McDonald’s straw bt longer) and when you remove the cam locating plate at the front of the cam, there is two holes, rotate the cam and then put the tube through to hold up the lifers. No risk of them dropping

    Another tip ypu can do to fo pulley installation for a stock or a front pinned dampner. Place the dampner in the sun for a couple hours to heat up a little, then spray the crank snout with a can of air duster upside down to freeze it and the pulley/dampner will virtually slide on.

    For TDC take out a spark plug and chuck in a compression gauge and crank it till it peaks and falls. Back off to the peak of compression. That is TDC. This saves you stripping the front of the engine.

      @deankay4434 4 роки тому

      @David Bloch >No exact answer on valve spring upgrade, but I think he mentioned LS3. If the GM performance standard single coil bee-hive springs, they are .560 lift max. Coil bing at .580 and lower valve float RPM if springs are weak. Too high, beats up entire valve train, hard on seats, valves and increases internal rotational friction. Match springs to camshaft lift on the phone with expert. Results will be longevity.
      No cam specs given in the video either, but all aside, I use a flex plate locking tool home made to fit in starter holes. As a retired ASE Master Tech. I go to my SnapOn cylinder leakage kit, install shop air adaptor while the cylinder is on power stroke, to hold valves up. The valve dropping by weight of gravity will have me putting new “One Piece” hat type seals as well. The brand I use puts blue rubber on intake valves and brown on higher temp exhaust stem. I’ve Never used rope ever although it works, I just don’t get a warm & fuzzy putting something inside the combustion chamber. A slight chance to slightly bend a valve makes me feel uncomfortable. Plus, the cylinder full of air stays inside, if not, look for leakage. 43+ years speaking cause I don’t like cutting corners.

    Would a LQ4 cam work in a L33? If it did would I need to tune it? From what I can see the only difference in the cams, is the intake and exhaust timing. The LQ4 is 196/207 while the L33 is 193/193. Also would it be necessary to change the valve springs? On a budget and just trying to fix a bad lifter and swap the cam with what I have on hand.

    I'm also from H-town and I appreciate your videos. Just bought our first LM7 to swap into an S10 and this will be one of the first upgrades we tackle. I know you didn't change rockers but did you have to change push rod lengths? I noticed on the other video you changed push rods and didn't know if this was due to length or just preventative maintenance.

    • @n8rivera74
      @n8rivera74 4 роки тому

      Check with the camshaft manufacturer about pushrod length. If the cam is ground on the same diameter base circle as a stock cam, you can re-use the stock pushrods. If you are going to a high lift (>0.600”) cam, you’ll be replacing the valve springs to prevent coil bind, it’s a good idea to get hardened pushrods, replacement valve springs are stronger/heavier and have been known to bend stock pushrods.

    • @hardball107
      @hardball107 4 роки тому

      You also NEED to change the rocker bearings at least. Every engine I build gets an upgrade to brass bushings, it's a $150 kit and increases the strength of the rocker 300%. I had one fail after a cam swap with the extra lift and pressure and it scattered those little pieces of hardened steel through my motor. Cheap insurance.

    I appreciate you taking the time to put up this educational vid. Looking to beef up my 06' GMC 5.3 Vortec (very common engine) to give it a little spunk, but not too much. I want to hear a little rumble, and get more power, but keep a little fuel economy. Can you recommend a cam for that application? Also, do you recommend a DIY computer tune after?

    • @Shelboooooo
      @Shelboooooo 2 роки тому +2

      Always a Custom tune. Even with a stock LS getting a custom tune will net results.
      Also devices with tunes already preset are not going to net as good of a tune, compared to a custom tune. This is due to Elevation and fuel and all sorts of stuff. Your engine can be tuned without buying for example an edge tuner. So save your money for a custom tune.
      A custom tune is highly recommended when swapping a Cam, to answer your question. And you should call a Cam manufacturer , they will help you purchase the right cam for what you need.

    How about the valve adjustment well I should say when you did the rocker arm bolt did you torque them when that specific cylinder was at the base circle of the cam or did you just torque them all down without putting that cylinder on the base circle of the cam??? Hope that makes sense what I'm asking

    • @Charlesbjtown
      @Charlesbjtown 4 роки тому +1

      You can torque them regardless as to where the lifter is on the cam. The pushrods dictate preload.

    How do you torque timing cover to oil pan I can’t get it to stop leaking

    • @383mazda
      @383mazda 3 роки тому

      You need to put rtv in that spot. The front and rear engine covers need a small dab at the bottom corners where the oil pan sits

    What can and springs do u recommend for a good loping sound on a Silverado 5.3 truck high miles

    • @HaydenZ06
      @HaydenZ06 4 роки тому

      Btr low lift truck cam, Ls7 springs will do fine. Probably go with a stage 1 or 2 unless you’re getting a stall

    • @BoBuilds
      @BoBuilds  4 роки тому

      Btr recommends ls6/ls3 valve springs. Ls7 valve springs have a different install height and would compress too much in a 5.3

    • @BoBuilds

      Of its cathedral port heads there no secret method. Just torque to 22LBS add send it. If it doesnt feel right. Unload the valve spring and re torque to 22lbs
