No i never considered quitting minimalism but i do like to have things which are necessary and are comfortable to keep because me and my husband both are 60plus and got a big house with two domestic help and my mother-in-la she is 90 years old live with us
I never wore the minimalist label (I don't really identify with labels), but I will always benefit from the intentional choices that minimalism reinforces. It is so easy to slide down the slope into materialism, it is nice that there are people like the Minimalists to help me stay off that slope.
NO OMG never. But I did have to stop my nearly furniture - free lifestyle during the pandemic because I had to be stuck at home so much even though I live in the Free State of Florida. But my business crashed. (pet sitter and nobody was leaving THEIR house) So I had to buy a sofa, some tables, lamps and got a large TV. Not a month goes by I'm not wanting to get rid of them but my business hasn't really improved and I need something to sit on not the bed LOL. Unlike Fumio Sasaki It takes me longer to move out - not 30 minutes - but I could do it in 6 hours. Anyone pushes "gifts" of stuff on me they go straight into the trash unless it's worth dropping off at Goodwill. if my goofy clients who KNOW better leave a bottle of wine (I don't drink) or some "cracker barrel" crap (I'm vegan), or candy type crap (don't eat it) I don't even accept them because I know they're re-gifts! .
T.K. is so wise and insightful. I’m so glad he is now a co-host as I get to learn from him every week! 🥳 I do miss the slightly longer public episodes though. 😢
Re wierd gifts from a family member: Our last Christmas, my soon-to-be ex-husband bought a themed Teddy Ruxpin bear for me, with a wood worker theme. I thought, "how cute" because I did not expect it to be my only gift. Then my Mom opened her gift; a TR "card playing" themed bear. And my Dad opened his "Hunter" bear. There were no other gifts for us, and the lack of thought put into his gift giving disappointed me. We had a business together, and when the Amex bill came in, I was shocked to see the Teddy Ruxpin company on the corporate card. I was also shocked to see the $750 total! I called them and asked for a copy of the bill. There were bears purchased for his Mom, and several other women at different shipping addresses. I contacted them and it turns out he had two girlfriends in our metro area, and 1 each at our lake house city and the 3 cities he most often visited for business!!! What a moron!! I only wanted to know if those 3 bears I saw on Christmas Day (purchased with our Corp Amex) cost $250 each. Found out more than I wanted to. My initial disappointment turned to anger, but now single for 25 years, it's a funny story!
I am 72, I am still trying to minimize my consumption of resources. I threw out a sock, it had a big hole in it. But our dinner tonight was fried rice because we had two eggs and a bunch of leftover cooked rice and some vegetables. Our family gives us gift cards for restaurants we like, by the way. Tina, Al's wife
I think there is a complexity around relationships and gift giving, that isn't addressed - some gifts come with unspoken relationship obligations - rejecting the gift can impact the relationship. I agree that we always have choices but redistributing gifts can impact the relationship and it's helpful to acknowledge that.
Another exceptionally good episode! TK really speaks to me! Loved the "new convert syndrome" definition. That made me realize I don't even talk about my yoga classes anymore! So, good for me! I did miss Ryan today! Guess what, guys? THIS is the episode that finally leads me to join patreon! For as long as I can, ok? 👍🏼
What about the obligation to give a gift back? When it’s their birthday. I’m not a gift person at all. Don’t like getting them and definitely don’t like trying to figure out what to get people. It’s overwhelming to me. Makes my brain hurt and I think it’s a waste of my time.
This would be a GREAT question for a future podcast episode. Would you be willing to send a voice memo to podcast@theminimalists.com? In the voice memo, just state your name and city (or use a fake name if you want to be anonymous) followed by your question.
JFM said it best. Minimalism is just a tool. The most important aspect of minimalism for me is freedom. This year I realized that my finances and being debt free were more important for that goal than having less things. Budgeting and working towards a debt free life had more significance and made my life more meaningful than going through my cupboards. Moving with alot of things is difficult, but not being able to move because you have no money is so much worse. I have more things than I used to but by next year my family and I will be free of debt payments!!! I didn't quit minimalism... my mindset was more minimalist than it's ever been. We were not focused on material things in any way, just focused on a value that my husband and I both had.
So, I like things minimal and small. I like that our house is chill and I can keep up with it..However hubby has big dreams to live in a huge house. I have learned that it's better to hear him out rather than push back ...cause it's his life too not just mine..so if we do end up building a larger house I'll just probably continue to keep it more minimal... regardless of the size.
Hey guys - I was really annoyed with the changes you made because, although I had been considering joining patreon (more than 5 bucks for us in the UK!), what I wanted was more of what I'd been watching the last year. I don't dislike TK Coleman but I was comfortable with how it was and I wasn't ready for change. The last two weeks half hour sessions have been quite entertaining and they fit in my lunch half-hour now. I still miss the old format but I don't hate the new one.
Hello i am from Pakistan i asked you a question about my husband kindly advise me how to convince my husband who keeps empty tins to get rid of that garbage
Can't imagine not talking about food... And I've been eating for about 4 decades. Not a backdrop for me Building community is always so tricky... Corona made things harder. Cool.
I feel like you misrepresented the "I'm quitting" videos. Sure, it is an extreme-sounding title, but it has a good potential topic for you. The people had a certain idea of minimalism, and their lives became _so_ minimalist, they had to "cut back", and allow things that added value. It is just a case of misunderstanding what good minimalism is.
God’s always trendy. And love that you shared the porn thing. My youngest son did same. Even wears a shirt “porn destroys love”. He’s in med school so that’s a conversation starter Love this idea. Can’t stand the chaos of so much around me. Helped two semi hoarders to move into an RV recently I almost couldnt breathe. Think over 60 spice bottles, to just begin with! I’m like salt pepper real cinnamon nutmeg and steak seasoning and put ‘em in magnets on fridge! Thx all. Enjoy week
Have you ever considered quitting minimalism?
Nope. 🤗

I love love LOVE TK's driving concept about 'quitting Minimalism'.
"Drop the label and get on with a healthy life"
Perfection! 👌
I really Appreciate T.K.'s perspective. He really is a deep thinker the more I hear him 💜
Agree

Absolutely Love This One. I did miss Ryan as he is easy on the eyes.
Great discussion!
TK is pure gold!
I love the term , "New convert syndrome". Thanks TK!
Sooo conflicted about Jamie Kilstein as a guest. (Former every day listener of Citizen Radio here).
Jamie is just hilarious! Thanks a lot guys for another great episode :)
Man, T.K. ……………. 😳
@7:50 - 10:37 - Man, oh MAN.

I have started again. It does feel good.
This was very timely.

Everything Evolves. Perhaps we need less attachments to the way we want things to be ✨️
Crikey 2 hours I’ll probably fall asleep by the end 😂😂

What is there to quit?? Coming home to peace and order? Having time to do the things that matter without brain clutter?🤷🏽♀️
12 steps for minimalism.

I personally would love a gift card to Applebees haha

What ever hapened to the value segment ?
If he mentions a song as an added value, it’s typically linked in the upper right. This one was linked @25:37 👍
Oh my gosh, I realize I have lost my sense of humor not laughing at Jamie like most of you are :(
🙂
