  • Today I look at what may have been the very first Japanese Kaiju Movie to ever have been made. The Great Buddha Arrival (1934) directed by Yoshiro Edamasa. I'll also be covering its sequel/reboot made in 2018 by 3Y Film, the same company that would go on to make Nezura 1964 (2020) and the upcoming Kaija Picture Hoshi 35 (2023).

I was not expecting to hear that people jumping into a volcano would prompt a film about a giant Buddha touring the city

It is kinda surprising how many weird obscure kaiju flicks exist. It really shows the potential and flexibility of the genre.

Another film with a stone (well, bronze rather) being thrashing at everything I recommend is Jason and the Argonauts!
The stopmotion used to portray Talos is simply wonderful, and simply another reason why I love Jason and the Argonauts.

Interesting and informative video, well done.

I recall that there is a manga which features a horde of giant killer buddha statues. Not being into nihilistic survival manga, I didn't commit the name to memory. Speaking of which, I recommend Paranormal Disaster Management - it follows a lady's career as an expert on kaiju and other entities, and has been a good read so far.

The whole idea for the lost film actually sounds really interesting & a proper reboot in the vein of, what I'm hearing about, Shin Ultraman would be a great movie, imo. A kaiju movie about hanging onto hope & how the kaiju helps ppl would also just be such a palette cleanser.

The legacy of the great living Daibutsu has rippled across Japanese pop culture in ways that may or may not be direct references to it. Some notable ones include an episode from the infamous, so-bad-it's-good series Chargeman Ken! in which invading aliens bring the statue to life to let it go on a rampage. The other notable reference is in GANTZ by Hiroya Oku, in which there's an entire story arc about the main characters battling an army of sentient Buddhist shrine statues, including the famous Daibutsu.

The plot of the 2018 movie is like if someone saw Godzilla and wanted to make a movie about a fictional character trying to prove it really happened. That’s a terrible idea for a movie. I’m surprised someone hasn’t made it and turned it into a Cloverfield movie

look I'll give them points for effort and you know I never give up hope of the original turning look the first ever what we'd consider a movie, being over an hour and on multiple reels, an Australian movie The Story of the Kelly Gang from 1906 was thought completely lost but they have over the years managed to find 17 minutes of footage from it so fingers crossed

I can read enough Japanese to tell that the original movie was a "talkie" (what they called movies with sound when that was a new thing). They're using the English word written out in katakana.
It sounds like the newer movie would've been better as a documentary about the original instead of what they actually did. It kind of reminds me of that Three Stooges movie from a few years ago. I would've been interested in seeing those actors play the actors who played the Stooges in a biopic, but instead they just have the Stooges going around meeting people like "Snookie", making the movie almost instantly more dated than the original Three Stooges shorts.

Could The Great Buddha (1934) have been the inspiration behind the Daimajin Trilogy(1966--68)? Both movies qualify as kaiju genre. Too bad the original movie was destroyed in WW2 when Tokyo was bombed--only a handful of film clips survive.
Were any prints of the 1934 movie ever distributed overseas? 🐉🐉🐉🐲
