This is how we froze optically clear 650 gallon ice blocks for the IceTop air shower array part of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. But we took it one step further. At the bottom of the tanks we had (well, have, they are frozen in place) corculation pumps to both mi's the water and push the water through a degasser. That way as the dissolved gasses got more concentrated as the ice was forming from the top down, we could pull the gasses out to avoid the bubbles at the bottom.

Clear ice is also really useful for drinks that aren't cold when you pour such as fresh tea. In a large cup, the tea at the, bottom will not be chilled by your ice if it's floating to the top. However, if you use clear ice, there are no bubbles to make it float. Therefore, it will chill the bottom, where your straw goes.
I initially came up with this justification when I was working a bar and was told there was no practical use for clear ice, and that it was just so the drinks look fancy. I sat and thought about it for a few days, and when I got a tea at my local gas station, I realized that the ice wasn't chilling the bottom.

One way I know of is to freeze it very slowly. Someone I know who was a bar tender. He would fill a drink cooler with water, like the big plastic ones you might take with you when going to a beach, and he would let it sit out in the sun to get it nice and moderately warm. Then wrap towels around it then wrap it in sramwrap then set it in his deep freezer. The cooler and all the towels would help insulate it and keep its temperature high but very slowly losing it energy and freezes. Takes like 3 days for it to freeze but boy it is very clear.

I haven't done either myself, just shit I've heard from science teachers and bartenders

The white haze in ice is not only because of impurities, it’s because ice expands while freezing, so when the outside is already frozen solid and the water in the center freezes, it expands and produces cracks.

  • @dragonemperor202

To make clear ice without bubbles, you can try the following methods:
    1. Purified Water: Start with purified or distilled water, as it contains fewer impurities and minerals that can contribute to bubble formation. Avoid using tap water, as it often contains dissolved gases and impurities that can create bubbles in the ice.
    2. Boiling Water: Boil the water before freezing it. This helps release any dissolved gases that may be present, reducing the chances of bubbles forming in the ice.
    3. Slow Freezing: Allow the water to freeze slowly. One way to achieve this is by using an insulated cooler or an ice mold with an insulated layer. Slow freezing helps the ice form more evenly, reducing the likelihood of trapped air bubbles.
    4. Directional Freezing: Set up a container with a barrier, such as a divider or cover, to encourage directional freezing. This means that the ice freezes from one side to the other, allowing trapped air and impurities to escape from the opposite side. This technique can help produce clearer ice with fewer bubbles.
    5. Distilled Water Spray: As the water starts to freeze, you can periodically spray a fine mist of distilled water over the partially frozen surface. This can help remove any remaining impurities or bubbles on the surface, resulting in clearer ice.
    6. Ice Ball Molds: If you're looking to make clear ice spheres, specialized ice ball molds can be used. These molds usually have a top and bottom section that allow for directional freezing, resulting in clearer ice spheres with minimal bubbles.
It's important to note that achieving completely clear ice without any bubbles can be challenging. Even with these techniques, it's possible to have some minor imperfections or trapped air. However, following these methods should help you achieve clearer ice compared to regular ice cubes.

Ice expands as it freezes, and ice cubes freeze from the outside in, so since the sides freeze first, they all push at the water in the middle, raising the water level in the middle higher and higher while the sides freeze further and further in, until you're left with a spike in the middle where the water level was forced the highest
      That's just speculation though

Or you can use an ultrasonic cleaner meant for glasses / jewelry / small parts, put it in the freezer and the whole block will be clear. Given the unit doesn't malfunction due to low temperatures, Maybe freeze at a few degrees under freezing point. Though would haft to bypass the timer but the unit probably wont overheat due to being in the freezer. The ultrasonic waves create micro implosions releasing the air in the water.

I'm not sure if I agree with the reason. I imagine the reason freezing from 1 surface increases the chance of a single ice crystal forming rather than many ice crystals that crash into each other and aren't aligned causing random scattering of light. However, that's just a guess. Though, I think if it was something to do with impurities then wouldn't the distilled water would work?

If I remember correctly in Mythbusters they used a vibrating thing to make ice clear and I think that worked.

Distilled water on its own does in fact freeze clear, boiling it probably makes it impure or something.

I think Eater has a video up on the guy who sells the most clear ice in New York the way he does it is in his tub he runs water through a pump and the water freezes from the bottom up once there is like half inch of water left he vaccums it out and then left with big block of clear ice

I've noticed clear ice in ice trays alot, I guess it freezes from the top down and pushes the air out the sides.

Im not sure if you're supposed to put insulated tumblers like that in the freezer. I mean every single yeti cup ive been given for the past 17 Christmases have had some sort of warning about putting them in the fridge.

Ok so what if you did it upside down? If it's freezing from the top down, the impurities are basically getting pushed down right? They get trapped, and eventually the remaining water is saturated, so that the water below won't accept more dissolved gasses. That's probably why the bottom part is cloudy.
If you do it from the bottom up though, perhaps you can leave an air gap at the top, for the dissolved gasses to be pushed out into. Of course, you can't just turn the bottle upside down, so you'll need something for a lid that is not insulating.
Hmm, the draft angles (the taper that allows the ice to come out) would be a problem though. As it expands, the ice will be pushed out the bottom, pushing the lid off. If they were reversed, it would trap the ice.
So here's what you need: A water bottle where the sides are insulated but the bottom isn't, and an insulated lid for the top (or something insulating you can just place on top). I doubt these would be easy to find though, so you would probably have to make your own. This could be done pretty simply by just making (or buying) a koozie that will fit the bottle and then putting it on upside down. (But Walmart sells craft foam that you could probably make one out of, with a lot more layers than the typical koozie, for better insulation.)
Well, now that I've figured out a really easy way to to do this, maybe _I'll_ try it! I could even do it with a basic tapered stainless steel cup, if I make my own insulating koozie...

    • @rybec
      @rybec 8 місяців тому

Oh, oh, oh! And with a stainless steel cup, I can just run warm water over the outside to get the ice out, after removing the insulating cover!
