In 1814 some lads pretended to come from France and told everyone napoleon was dead, albiet not as prank ; the price of government bonds soared and the fraudsters sold the ones they had bought for a fortune before everyone found out he was very much not dead. (Would have made a good ye olde trashfuture episode.) The best part is that one of the guys (debately? his family spent the next century beefing with the judge who found him guilty?) found guilty of rigging the stock market was Lord Cochrane - the guy who's the basis for the character of Jack Aubrey, of Oceans Are Battlefields fame. I'll shut up now.
