    i wonder if Lexus would have the same level of market impact and brand loyalty - in short, be as popular - if they were known as Grand Toyota.

    • @predrag_stamen
      @predrag_stamen 2 роки тому +4

      I think GS would do better with another name. They are positioned to make luxury product under brand name made by just adding Grand on Seiko, which is undoubtedly rich in history but positioned to catter to masses and inferior in terms of quality and design. Still remember Volkswagen Phaeton failing. Who wants to drive Volkwagen that costs more than 90k?🤔 No one can persuade me Audi would be sold better under Grand Volkswagen badge, although it shares more technology with Volkswagen than GS shares with Seiko! I understand the logic with naming two Seiko divisions Grand and King for the sake of internal competition. I don't understand keeping Grand after.

      People buy Lexus because it's a luxury Toyota so not at all. They want the reliable but higher quaility so they go Lexus over BMW

      Completely agree even if it has ties the fact it has a new logo and no mention of Toyota anywhere makes it feel different enough to justify the price. Spending 6k-15k on with that says seiko on it just feels cheap even if none of it is cheap

      It's tough but not impossible. For example, Range Rover has clearly defined its own market impact and customer base completely different from Land Rover (both the same manufacturer but RR are definitely their upmarket models).

    Brother, my late great grandfather worked in a coal mine in Wales. He told me that asking a coal miner for the time was respected. They would stop and put down their tools and carefully pull out a tin box and open the lid. Then they’d carefully remove a layer of cotton wool to expose a silver pocket watch and check the time. Nothing compares to the art of looking to ones wrist that human hands have made the time piece on your wrist compared to a phone.

    Grand Seiko offers great value right now. I’m a big Spring Drive fan, a Spring Drive GS is actually one of my grail watches. But I understand it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. I’m also a quartz lover… GS is right down my alley. Fantastic dials.

    Big dress watch fan here too. I just got a beautiful Seiko SPC251P1. Had been on my wishlist for some time and I bought it at just €160 on offer. Beautiful silver dial and a chronograph perpetual. I'm just waiting on a leather strap that I ordered to complement this piece.

    Rules for appropriate dressing have changed drastically over the past 10-15 years. I am almost 40 now, when I was going to clubs in my early 20's, dress shirt and shoes were mandatory. You could get away with dark jeans if worn with a blk button up and blk loafers. Now days these kids go to the club wearing a Hoodie. I say that to say dress watches are gaining popularity, this is because it's OK to wear a Cartier with jeans and a T-shirt. GS I arguably my favorite all around watch maker, I have 4 and none are sports watches. I dress more on the casual side, and have no problem pairing my fit with a GS "dress watch" with casual clothing

    Hi Fed, really agree with your comments about the world getting entirely too casual. It's ridiculous what some people think is appropriate to wear in certain situations and COVID unfortunately made the offenders even worse at this than before! People need to tighten up their game and show themselves some respect in my opinion. So I agree with you... I hope that dress watches make more of a comeback as that will hopefully bring along the level of the clothing and respect people show along with it.

    “I don’t necessarily love spring drive.” Could you elaborate on this point? The spring drive mechanism is a pretty amazing fusion of the best of both automatic and quartz. Does it provide an excessively difficult situation in terms of servicing? It strikes me as a potentially very long lasting movement, but I would definitely be curious about what a watch technician would have to say about getting a ten year old spring drive in for servicing versus a Rolex or Omega,.

    Have just watched one of your other videos in which you talk about “toxic” element to the GS owners community. I find this offensive, and you really should not generalise like this. I am a member of that community, and would never attack your views on GS watches. Nor do I believe would the majority of GS owners. What you have done is to upset many serious GS owners by implying that toxicity comes with being part of the community. Glad to hear you at least setting the record straight regarding your liking for the watches. But, an apology to the GS owners community may be appropriate. You really shouldn’t generalise like that. There will be Rolex owners, and owners of many other brands who you may also regard as toxic, but you do not signal them out. Regards

    Spring drive seems to me to be a solution in search of a problem. Yes, you could make that claim about fully mechanical watches, too, especially ones with advanced complications. But a fully mechanical watch carries the charm, romance, and craftsmanship that makes it appealing, and that is the whole point. A spring drive watch is essentially a quartz watch. There does not seem to be a point, though the Grand Seiko quality is cerainly first rate To me, spring drive is sort of like a nifty, two-seater convertible with an automatic transmission. It misses the whole point.
