Dreamworks is weird. Sometimes they release gold but then release shit. Rinse and repeat
Matthew Pineau how long did this take you r u ok
Like recent Disney ;)
Dreamworks movies are a matter of taste. Some movies are agreed to be shit by pretty much everyone (Trolls), some are okay, some are really just for one group of people and some are usually recieved as masterpieces.
They really need to get their shit together, are they a kids movie company? A serious movie company? Both? They themselves probably don't know.
I do agree that there are some movies from them I can watch over and over and never get bored (Megamind), some aren't quite my taste (Rise of the Guardians, I personally thought it couldn't find balance between being too dark and being too silly) and some are confusing, boring and insulting.
ReasyRandom Well if you look at a lot of their stuff like Antz, megamind, monsters vs aliens, home, and probably boss baby are forgettable and bland
Creepy Closet
Yes it's a hit and miss with them.
"What's ruining Dreamworks?"
*ad before video is trailer for Boss Baby*
I wonder lmao
And Katzenberg isn't in charge anymore.
Universal owns the company.
And personally, I think Dean DeBlois (the director of Httyd) should take over the company, or at least be in charge of the animation department) he really knows what he is doing. at least, that is what I think...
lol
I got a trailer to Captain Underpants.
Kit Dean DeBlois really would be great in charge! He doesn't really mess up his movies. Just look at the HTTYD series!
I blame the critics.
DreamWorks: **Creates a vibrant universe fillled with monsters, aliens, and wizards**
Also DreamWorks: Snails go slow? What if snails go fast? Good pitch!
Sonic The Hedgehog: *exists*
Random Dreamworks director: WhAt AbOuT mAkE a SnAiL gO fAsT?
Paramount: DreamWorks made a movie about snails going fast? What if we made a movie about a hedgehog going fast?
General Public: That is not how a hedgehog should look.
Paramount: Hey, Sega, do hedgehogs look like this?
Sega: I see no problem with HOLY HELL PLEASE TAKE IT BACK
I love trollhunters , 3 below and the soon to come wizards
Did you quote jello apocalypse?

I seriously thought that Boss Baby was made by Illumination. That's the level that the movie felt like
Its not?
@@justnatsuki8319I know, right?
Also the animation style looks like illumantion
Lmao
The only reason I knew if was DreamWorks was the lack of a minion
*Dreamworks*: Lets make a movie about the biblical story of Moses.
*Also Dreamworks*: Hey, let's make a movie of a snail that's faster than Sonic the hedgehog.
DangerousDannyT how is a fast snail a good idea?
Sonic can run a bit faster than the speed of light so no
Sound you mean, the intro says sound.
Sonic can outrun black holes for a few seconds, check out Colors' ending.
You seem like you have a dog in this fight.
One movie I liked a while back is Megamind. Shame no one really talks about that one anymore.
Mateo YES
Mateo Yeah!
Mateo i didn't really think much of megamind when it came out, because it didn't look interesting in marketing. i did, however, see it at a dollar theater when the movie wasn't playing regularly, and i have to say, i was shocked i didn't see it sooner. that movie was a good parody on the good vs evil concept, which brought out great humor at times.
It's criminally underrated
Mateo that was a good movie
Dreamworks: Lets make the villain of Kung Fu Panda a sadistic peacock who was directly involved in Po’s past. And we’ll make him a white peacock since the color white symbolizes death in Chinese culture.
Also Dreamworks: What if the villain was a guy who’s upset that he’s no longer a baby.
Truer words have not before been said
What about Captain Underpants?

I worked at DreamWorks from "Antz" through "Home" - to answer your question...
1. "Films by Committee." Singular perspectives and voices rarely succeeded.
2. With the exception of Shrek and Madagascar (which were actually made by PDI in Redwood City), sequels took way too long to materialize. A 10-year-old who loved a film, might not get a sequel until they were 15 or 16... too long!
3. For the most part, films were 'directed' by the Producers - not the actual Director(s). And rarely were any of the Producers actual former artists, writers or directors.
The employees always knew how to fix it, but nobody at the top ever listened.
That's very interesting what did you work as? What was it like working on those movies?

Madyson Andres they were both being made simultaneously. Not sure who had the idea on an ‘insect movie’ first - but they take three years to make. ‘Antz’ is definitely a bit more adult.
DreamWorks has an identity. The company that has spawned a great number of dank memes.
Sadly, those dank memes are all they're gonna be remembered for at this point...
*meme works*
You like jazz?
Dreamworks, the company that make kids movies into dank memes.

It's so easy to dismiss Dreamwork as Memeworks, but honestly they've come up with some great films. Prince of Egypt, HTTYD, Rise of the Guardians and Kungfu Panda are my favourites. And obviously Shrek and Megamind for some damn fantastic comedy.
J Kay I wish they did more with Rise of the Guardians.
I would have loved a sequel dealing with a Cupid like character.

I did. I'm guessing that the holiday patron angle wasn't for everyone. Maybe like "oh a Christmas movie". and that's kind of a different market than normal.
So in that Shrek win clip:
Mike and Sully do forced smiles until the camera focuses more on them then it is real smiles, and Jimmy is holding up a clap machine while looking so disinterested.
Who knew cartoons were such sore losers.
Okay we can all agree Prince of Egypt, How to Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda, maybe Shrek (1 and 2) are great movies, but I feel like Megamind, Monsters vs. Aliens, and Rise of the Guardian are underrated.
anyone wanna agree or start and Internet argument?
How about both?
Wy'Kia no argument here

Wy'Kia i had doubts of megamind when it came out, but i actually really enjoyed it when it went to see it at my old dollar theater, and it was pretty good.

Oh shit I literally just realized while watching this that the SKG in "Dreamworks Animation SKG" stands for Spielberg Katzenberg Geffen. I always thought it was like LTD or something.
I wish Dreamworks would do something like Prince of Egypt and Road to El Dorado again. The problem with their insistence in using 'hilarious' pop culture in pretty much all their films now is that it is way overused now and it's going to date the films horribly in a fairly short time.
1Thunderfire There was going to be another 2D movie from dreamworks. Unfortunately it was cancelled to make way for only 3D movies.

Hey Saberspark!
I was an Animation student and attended Dreamworks, Pixar, and Disney recruiting presentations and you're absolutely right.
Dreamworks presentations were always focused on technical spaces and look for pawns to do 'minor work' (like their television division) while Pixar and Disney are more focused on core virtues and looking for new blood and ideas. Dreamworks also, according to the recruiter, hasn't changed their main character designer team since THE BEGINNING.
I've also met people who worked at Dreamworks and they always were very 'meh' about the experience while Disney and Pixar ex animators and art directors talked about their experiences as live changing.
At least Cars 3 looks like it has an actual story to tell instead of more spy bullshit.
I noticed that as well. Also, they're mostly hiring for their TV shows, which the animation for are outsourced, so that's not really a lot of jobs they're giving out.
2017 7102 Yeah, Cars was awesome, Cars 2 was weird and choppy, and Cars 3 looks really good
Mae Dominguez I took a class with two Pixar employees and it was the best experience of my life
Hey, waitaminute, I've seen you before on UA-cam. Now I can read your comment in your voice.
Rise of the Guardians will remain my favourite Dreamworks movie.
Their best three movies were roughly based off of a children’s book series.
My fourth favourite(behind all 3 of Httyd) movie was based off of some children’s books.
Disney: Their movies are pretty much all based off of a real fairytale, in some way.

Tales of Arcadia Trilogy

wha is tal3s of arcadia... i only know trollhunters
Troll Hunters gets boring after some time
The Madagascar franchise was my childhood. They seemed like incredibly fun storylines with passion, heart, and fun interesting characters especially the penguins and the old lady. I even had a Dreamworks Wii game when I was younger with the Madagascar characters.
Dreamworks had their chance to have it's own identity I feel. They could be the ones who targeted teens with more 'dark' humor and raw characters. Shrek and Antz are perfect examples for that. Teens don't want toys of the characters, they do however like wacky characters they can make edgy memes of.
Hey I'm Milki ツ however, if one wants to compete with Disney, one needs to enter their niches and produce content that can be transformered into toys and lunchboxes. That wouldn't really work for teenagers and yound adults. However, perhaps it is their insistance to catching up with Disney instead of walking their own road is doomed from the start. Again, going their own way though might not prove profitable in the multimedia arena of toys, games, comics and parks.
Dreamworks should do movie parodies of Disney franchises like Marvel,Star Wars,The Muppets,or Pixar movies
Am I the only one that actually liked Road to El Dorado?

"Kids want Lighting McQueen or an Elsa Toy. Not Shrek". Well, actually, that feels like the intention of the movie. Also, the Internet mocks Shrek out of love. And I actually have a whole other Theory of why Dreamworks sucks balls. Go on Wikepedia, and search Pixar films. You will find 16. Go on Wikipedia, and search Dreamworks films. No joke, you will find 34. Yeah, since 1998 they have made 34 fucking films. Their problem isn't that they don't have an identity. They have the exact same problem as Watchmojo.Com. The internet DOES NOT mock Shrek, the internet ADORES AND WORSHIPS Shrek
To me it's absolutely mindblowing that The Road To Eldorado wasn't as much of a hit as it was for me as a child. I LOVE that movie, and it has a great storyline as well; it tells the true worth of gold in comparison to fellowship. Not to mention that the animation is actually really good, topnotch humour, and the music is FANTASTIC since the Danish version (the one I grew up with) had a beloved Danish musician make all the soundtracks. And to this day, it remains some of the best music of his legacy. But that's just my point of view...
Johanne Rasmussen I watched that recently, and I really did like it. It was a fun movie, good plot, theme, and funny. I totally agree with you!

personally, I see DreamWorks as the animation company that isn't afraid to be dark and serious every now and then but can still make a joke. they don't make their films super vanilla to be able to market it to everyone. they take risks. and no it doesn't always pay off and they do make safe cash-grab movies. I see it as a company that cares about artistic integrity at least when they have a good marketable franchise on their hands. like Shreck, How to Train Your Dragon, and Kung Fu Panda. Pixar and Disney are monsters of a company. they pump out movies with a reputation as a family-friendly film and animation company to uphold. so DreamWorks has a lot more freedom. and even Disney is guilty of running franchises into the ground. hell, the majority of their sequels are nothing more than cash grabs and are never acknowledged again after their release. anyone can tell that they aren't made to be good or continue the story after 10 minutes into the movie. at least that's how it was with their older movies. modern Disney and Pixar are making sequels with a lot more careful now. if anyone here wants to dive into this kind of stuff more you should check out shafrillous productions. his icon is a big ol Tomatoa from Moana. he does reviews and analysis of mostly DreamWorks films and they are amazing. he is also pretty funny.

What I love about Dreamworks is that they always try new things. All the other companies are known for something but Dreamworks does not have a label. It's always doing something different. And even if it sucks, hey, at least they tried something interesting and different.
Sometimes that original idea isn’t successful

Comcast bought DreamWorks, so they're reviving it.
Learning from Schraffillas, i know what Dreamworks’ identity should be and what they should run with. Stories where characters deal with the intricacies of finding meaning in their unexpected strengths they never know, they have. This can be evidenced from Shrek, HTTYD, Kung Fu Panda, Megamind, The Prince of Egypt, and the Road to El Dorado. I think this identity for their brand will be perfect for them and might come with consistent success. This is the most important part, factor, and strength Dreamworks has, and what other studios should have.
Identity.
You know Dreamworks did Small Soldiers a different version of Toy story but it was live action and violence for kids but it was hilarious funny.
I really wish Dreamworks would've done more hand drawn animated movies like Prince of Egypt ;~;.
Well, there's on currently in development that combines hand drawn and CGI. It's called "Me and My Shadow".

what a dweeb :/ Don't forget Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron!
what a dweeb :/ love prince of Egypt : a beautiful and surprisingly mature film
I just don't understand how they can make kickass movies, followed by shitty ones. It's actually kinda sad to see their potential go to waste. They've already shown they can rival Disney and Pixar. The Prince of Egypt proved that DreamWorks could be better than it's competition. But no, let's make a movie about a snail that goes fast lol.
Jar of Jelly I actually really like turbo
Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron is another example of a movie that rivals Disney
Jar of Jelly the same problem as Sega they made a game about a heaghod that run fast.
I guess they tried to be ironic as Pixar idk
as someone who knows the ways of an artist a little bit.. you never really know what will be a hit or a miss... You might like the product you produced but others might not bite. This is why you will get lots of artists and creator types who become bitter and fed up with people in general.. They start to think that most people don't know what art is.. or they don't understand why people prefer one type over another type.. Any kind of creation based work is risky. It doesn't matter if it is films, fine art, comics, games, or whatever You just really never know if the public will bite and that is just the way it is. This is why there are also other companies who refuse to do anything really new in terms of ideas. Why risk putting money and time in to something that isn't known to work or not. Experiments can be very costly in more ways than one.
I know five words to summarize this entire video..
Shrek The Third Ruined Dreamworks
Platinum Medal: Disney
Gold Medal: Pixar
Silver Medal: DreamWorks
Bronze Medal: Illumination
Crappy Participation: Sony Pictures Animation
Swap Sony Pictures Animation with Illumination
Pixar should be platinum
What about Blue Sky?
Swap Disney and Pixar and also swap Illumination and Sony . Cough into the spider verse cough
@@ult935 Into the Spider-verse will be the only good thing we see from Sony Pictures Animation.
@@dragondelsur5156 Ehmm, Surf's Up, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, heck even Hotel Transylvania, those might not be the best in storytelling, but it is good animation
A good portion of the company is based off of revenge towards Disney/DisneyPixar. The director of How to Train Your Dragon Chris Sanders worked for Disney until he and Lassater had a fight, and the original director of Brave quit and works for Dreamworks now. I feel like Dreamworks is the place you go when you can't get into Disney or when you're pissed off at them. I feel bad because there is some amazing talent put into these films, the animation for the most part has been phenomenal, but everything coming together is sloppy. I used to really hope Dreamworks would make something of themselves (and I'm a Pixar FANATIC) but now, I could care less. Really disheartening. At least we have our Shrek memes.
At least Pixar are still successful by critics and audiences.
I'm sure there's hope for Dreamworks. After all, the more ex-Disney employees they get, the more actually good talent they get.
problem with Pixar is they're doing to many sequels like seriously who asked for Cars 3? Cars 2 was bad
kyotheman69 Let Pixar make sequels. We are still getting original ideas anyway.
I feel like a lot of the best movies have been made by Dreamworks or at least best animated movies in the past 10 years maybe less, I really liked How To Train Your Dragon 1 and 2, along with Kung Fu Panda 1 (2 and 3 are only ok.)
The one thing I love about Shrek the most in its comparisons to Disney is that it's the monsters who find true love in the end. While it is a massive piss take it also has a genuine message against Disney's beautiful heroes. Beauty is subjective and everyone deserves happiness 💚
F. Ugly people are gross lmao.
Agent. ( -_-)
yeah.but when you're pretty your personality could be pretty gross.
gay
F. Well done! You stated the most blatant and obvious message the movie had to offer. You truly are an inspiration.
Beauty and the beast already did that buddy.
Me:
Dreamworks: *YA LIKE JAZZ?*
Take that A- back How to Train Your Dragon is at least an A or A+
That's a series I wanted to like, but I couldn't stand Hiccup's voice.

I just realized the SKG at the end of Dreamworks Animation SKG stands for Spielberg, Katzenberg, and Geffen
Really? I'VE BEEN WONDERING WHAT THAT STOOD FOR FOR YEARS
...or was that a joke that I just missed
Just popped that in my head.
Watch ami at in look back dreamworks
I thought it stood for Super Killer Graphics.
Makes sense
Saber: What's ruining Dreamworks?
Also Saber: *Puts Shrek in thumbnail*
Everyone: *Visible confusion*
That’s how it is for his other videos though
**Shrek 5 announced**
Moses: No.... NOOOOOOO
Does anyone remember Megamind?
Sarah Hays I know right?
Sarah Hays I will always remember that gold.
me. I do.
Megamind was great
Best fucking movie of all time
Disney is like.. untouchable now. Especially with buying LucasArts and Fox.
Boxes World And theyre destroying them
Disney owns 40% of all media
Dreamworks should do movie parodies of Disney franchises like Marvel,Star Wars,The Muppets,or Pixar movies
And Marvel
Can someone bring up the fact that Disney buying other film companies is starting to become a monopoly? Seriously, no one is talking about this.
I think that DreamWorks is better than Sony, Illumination, Or Blue Sky, but behind Disney and Pixar. For me personally, I grew up loving Shrek, Megamind and Kung fu panda.
I love The Prince of Egypt. I watched parts again last night and it is so awesome. The songs. The scores. The animation. The human story. The emotions. Everything. The commentary is really interesting too. It’s one of my favourite films.
I'd say a lot of Dreamworks is really solid. Spirit is gorgeous, El Dorado is so quotable it hurts. It's not just about Shrek. Dreamworks is a company that tries things; they aren't burdened by keeping to their "identity". They can try anything, which is why we get odd hits like Kung Fu Panda. I hope Dreamworks continues to give me something unique and gives everyone a run for their money. But, with this said, I realize that not all of their choices (Boss Baby) are great. But then something like Prince of Egypt or Kung Fu Panda are gorgeous and touching. I think they are respectable and I will always be excited for them to release a new idea.
BloodyRomance1313 Thank you so much for bringing up Spirit!

20:49 I have Kevin and Doug plushies. My uncles wedding theme was up. I mean it I gave him my toys as part of the wedding decor! 2nd
Their new movie looks like shit... why can't they just make something like Prince of Egypt again?
Lol
Because 2d animators dont exist anymore. They're either freelance or solo operations.
BackToTheTwentiethCentury which one? boss baby or captain underpants?
2d animation traditional drawn out is hard to do these days, and the animators probably quite. i don't see the reasons why they should go back to it, but then again 2D animation movies were actually the best so far. 3D is too easy too make i guess, and can be nerve wrecking to see a lot of trash coming out of it. i know some 3D animation is great, but 2D brings out a lot of the good stuff too see.
i agree with you right there.
Fish eye the Artist I didn't mean make traditional animation, I was just saying they should make more movies like that, with that emotion and scale.
Dreamworks. The animation company that birthed so many memes.
UPDATE:
- Ruby Gillman was a box office bomb.
- Megamind sequel movie/series was released on Peacock.
- NBCUniversal wanting them to rush productions like The Wild Robot.
- DreamWorks are about to cut 40-50% of their creative staff.
- DreamWorks are going full out-sourcing with Sony Imageworks.

Since Dreamworks has made so many memes I'm questioning why they haven't changed their name to "Memeworks".
Claim it yours before they take it !
Awesome Supercat Yeah, Memeworks. I can see that.
Memeworks sounds like a wonderful studio.
Why do you think they are making Boss Baby? Did you know that is actually an old meme? (like pre-2010 old)
Fun Fact: Dreamworks was originally gonna make an animated Gorillaz movie, but they wanted it to be family friendly, so Jamie pulled the deal.
I think we dodged a bullet there
@@grimlealbloodxx ikr
@@grimlealbloodxx yah, makes alot of sense that they pulled the deal
Thanks for nothing Dreamworks, you wasted the posibility to work with my favorite artist of all time.
DreamWorks: let's take the basic idea of a book about dragons and make it into our own cool idea
Also DreamWorks: let's work with Netflix to make a mediocre animated show that's 'based' off that one book from before and hope people don't notice
Mustiboi Salman, how?
@Mustiboi Salman Why's that?
Dreamworks' strategy:
If it makes money,
Make more of it.
Lol Lolson I think you meant Sony pictures strategy
I thought that was Pixar's approach with Cars and it's spin-off.
Watzit Tooya pixar didn't make planes
Chase Colby Oh, my bad. Shows how much I care.
*The pizza is aggressive*
exactly
Oh no😱
DreamWorks has amazing 2d animated movies and all of them were amazing and terribly underrated. At least they have a, imo, perfect track record with their dead 2D branch.
This video became a joke when Puss in boots: The Last Wish came out
And now it's back into relevancy with ruby Gillman
Megamind 2
You’re a joke nowadays
HTTYD is the movie that got me into animation and encouraged me to draw and eventually lead me to digital art and animation/storyboarding. I owe a shit ton to the franchise and am crazy loyal to it but man, I don't get how they make movies like Shrek (a hit), HTTYD, Megamind, and Kung Fu Panda; good movies, but then think making a movie about a boss baby or a really fast snail would work.
im in the same boat
Im the only one who loves turbo
@@Mr.Feather130 nope
@@uncleshrek3614 well okay Mr.ogre
Omg agreed so much !!!!! Httyd is my favorite
DreamWorks please, Please, PLEASE don't f*ck up How To Train Your Dragon 3!
Especially since it's the first movie of their new deal with Universal. Oh crap.
Not to hate but I don't think you mentioned Croods or at least showed a clip in your vid. It's always been my mom's fav movie & was made by Dreamworks.
Me to that it's fav movie of my little sister
Oh yeah croods was amazing. One of my dads favorite animated movies because he always laughs at the jokes xp
Hi Bakugo
Croods was meh but the animation was really nice
The film was bad but the concept seems more like younger audiences would enjoy and as a kid I felt like it was fine
Calling The Prince of Egypt just "good" is a crime smh
Wixked Latte it’s god tier
The fact that good and god have a 1 letter difference makes me believe he made a mistake, a BIG mistake.
