Did Pixar KILL 2D Animation?

  • A big accusation that people throw at Pixar is that they ended the popularity of 2D animated films. Is this true? Are they responsible for ending the theatrical 2D trend?

No, Disney did. They actively sabotaged all of their final 2D films to justify not making anymore, despite one of them, Treasure Planet, being a gift to two of their most dedicated animators.
Also, current Disney executives have publicly admitted to hating their old 2D films.
Combine that with how they crushed all competition in animation, and you can see how Disney single-handedly killed the form of filmmaking that got them to where they are.
So yeah, Disney not Pixar, is to blame for the death of 2D animated films. No one else.

There are so many Disney 2D movies that, despite having brilliant visuals, had lousy stories. I wait for the moment 2D is able to make a comeback even more creative than before. Nya, Honestly, 2D is only "dead" in the United States, in movie theaters, specifically. In the rest of the world I assure you that it's alive. Yes, during the 3D explosion in the 2000s in Europe we experienced a 3D boom but in the end, in general terms, we came to the conclusion that it was the system to make cheap productions of use and throw, second category films. Some are still released in this system, mainly of characters that were born in 3D and some companies that specialized in it, but in recent years the great animated blockbusters, those that take all the prizes and those loved by critics and audiences are in 2D.
There are a couple of details that I think is important to highlight.
Anime movies gathers more and more public in the theathers (I don't know how the situation will be in the United States but in Europe this is very remarkable, there are more and more premieres and more publicity and marketing campaigns)
    .
On the other hand the Chinese titan has finally woken up and also seems a future contender to consider. Africa may even have something to say in the future, taking into account the progress its animated cinema is having lately.
In many countries the productions of companies such as Dreamworks have lost the fight against local films. Even Pixar seems to be experiencing a setback because of its sequels. Even his new stories don't seem to be up to previous ones like "Wall.e" or "Up".
No doubt Disney will slow down the process with its CGI films that amass a lot of money and that the general public doesn't recognize as animated films even if they are (and with the tactic of buying more companies in a desperate attempt to make more money and destroy the competition), but it seems clear that we are in a new moment of change, as happened in 1995 with "Pocahontas" and "Toy Story".
In short, I think we are going to live interesting times.

This is such a great comment, a great overview of animation worldwide.
My main hope for the future is that Disney ends up going through tough times, allowing the European and possibly the Chinese animation industry to grow stronger and maybe exert themselves beyond their borders more clearly, and allowing the African scene to finally mature without that much American competition.

These are all very interesting assertions but you've failed to name even a single 2D blockbuster since you claim it is alive and well outside of the US. I was not very blown away by the animated offerings in the international film festival circuit in 2019; festivals I traveled outside of the US to attend. There was one from Pakistan that allegedly took ten years to produce but it looked direct-to-dvd and the messages are far from universal let alone comprehensible. And I saw a Chinese 3D film that looked technically comparable to Pixar but I swear it's a story that's been told a million times before.

I'm reminded of a quote from an interview with John Lasseter (the chief creative officer at PIXAR during their most famous years) whenever the topic of the death of 2D animation in the west is brought up.
"...Think of two movie studios that are making live action films. One makes really popular films and the other just so-so films. The so-so films studio would look over and go *Oh I get it! I know why our films are not doing well at the box office, we're using the wrong camera! We're gonna use that camera from that film studio that's doing amazing work! And now our movies are gonna be liked by audiences.* Of course that's ridiculous but that's the way we feel about hand-drawn animation vs computer animation. Never in the history of cinema has a movie been entertaining to an audience because of the technology. It's what you do with the technology, it's what you do with the medium that's so special. (...) 2D animation became the scapegoat for bad storytelling."
What was especially interesting to me was that John said in the same interview that the very first thing PIXAR wanted to do when they merged with Disney & John was made the chief creative guy at Disney Animation Studio, was make a hand-drawn animated film.
PIXAR was never out to defeat 2D animation, they wanted to participate in making it.

Yeah but Lasseter quickly gave up on 2D after Winnie the Pooh bombed at the box office in 2011. He said that there would be a 2D animated film released every two years but he just gave up on it because 2D wasn’t that profitable for appealing to a niche fanbase.

Rae Marie it doesn’t help that two of Disney’s 2D films, Atlantis and Treasure Planet specifically, were beaten like a dead horse before they even got a chance to race.
Disney actively sabotaged their releases, over-exposing both films with commercials that basically told you outright what was going to happen and losing audience anticipation. They were both complete flops, but honestly they might have sustained 2D animation for Disney at least by a few years had the producers not been so ignorant to create their own self-fulfilling prophecy.

A criticism I would make here--and of a lot of this general discussion--is that I think it makes too strong an assumption that people prefer CGI animation, where tons of people I know prefer 2D (and I'm seeing this in the comments too). I think studios made this same assumption too, when the real issue was, as you highlighted, Pixar was putting out better stories in their 3D movies than Disney did in their 2D movies. For some reason, studios (Disney specifically) don't seem to notice what people are actually saying about the style they prefer. Maybe it's because of Princess and the Frog's grossing, but that also had a pretty convoluted story, much as I love that movie.
I do think it's interesting that we're now starting to see 3D animation start to imitate 2D animation. For instance, you talked about Spiderverse and what it's doing with 3D, but I think it looks at least as much like 2D animation as stereotypical 3D animation. I think this "blending" is the next big animation frontier, at least for Western theatrical animation.

Also I would like to add that saying later 2D movies not being as good is subjective because I enjoyed a lot of them and a handful are actually among my top favorites! Including Iron Giant, Atlantis, Emperor's New Groove, Lilo & Stitch, Treasure Planet, Brother Bear, even during their original release (I was in elementary school). I've always favored them over the CG films that dominated the intellectually irrelevant Box office and still do. Just because it's different from Broadway style colorful and bright musicals of whimsy doesn't make them 'not as good'.
That annoys me. 😠 Why it died was because the novelty of new kid CG and families pressuring Disney to stay 'family-friendly' and keeping to their trademark fairytale musical brand, and companies/audiences throwing their money and support into CG production and marketing was the nail to the coffin. This is why mainstream Western 2D has become a hollow business dependent on meme culture for fast money, companies have been discouraged in creatively exploring. Conversely, in Asia, exploration is highly encouraged in the industry. So in a way, Pixar (CG) was the starting point to killing 2D, made the Western public's preferences shift.

I've actually met a couple of incredulous old Disney animators who expirenced that during a bootcamp in the 2000s. The sad part is that they didn't understand why their decision was dismantled when the answer was so obvious. 3D animation, while using the same animation principles as 2d animation, can produce the same product at a faster and cheaper rate. Simple as that. Most 2D animations do not use the medium's strangths hard enough (via use of space), and because of that 2D animators became complacent.
It's not saying that one medium is more superior to the other, it's just the honest truth, as it is now 3d animation is more is more efficient than 2d animation.

There’s still 2D animation production in Japan, South Korea, and Europe. Like ‘Song of the Sea’ was nominated for Annie Award and Oscars, unfortunately, it didn’t do well financially in the US (around $800k). In my opinion, the film, the visual, the music, and the story was beautiful. It’s a shame some audience can’t take a break from 3D animation films just to appreciate 2D animators’ hours of hard work and hand cramps.
Also to note, Cuphead brought 2D animation style back to life. The game was a phenomenal. If you have time, go check out ‘Hand Drawn’ it’s a 20 minute interview/documentary about animators doing 2D animation.

Although i dare venture that gamers are more open minded to different artstyles than the regular movie going audience. Games has always been displayed digitally, so they never had a "baseline" style such as live action movies. Every game needs to come up with their own visuals, so gamers are probably more used to that sort of thing.

This was a nice video essay. I am definitely on the side of those who blame the fall of 2D animation in Western Cinemas on the decline in quality, and the poor treatment of the creators by the Studio's that distributed the movies. It really is a shame that 2D animation gets thrown under the bus so much now in the US. My only real pet peeve with the video is Saber having to keep explaining himself when he is discussing how the post Renaissance Disney animated movies did poorly critically , and in the box office. I personally understood what he was trying to say the first few times, and that he wasn't hating on those movies.. At the same time though I do appreciate him doing it so that people won't interpret it' like he's trashing the movies. I also would have liked it if, in the conclusion portion of the video, he'd mentioned 2D animations influence on Western TV animation, and the rise in popularity of independent animation, and International forms of Animation, like anime, as a way of reminding the viewer that even if Hollywood doesn't care for 2D animation anymore, it still has a strong following in the US and most parts of the world, even though it's niche. But these are just knit picks, Overall the video was pretty solid. Nice job Saber.

I honestly really really miss watching 2D movies. They were such good movies and they will always have a place in my heart. I miss seeing the Aristocats style of animation; the very sketchy outlines, the good anatomy, thr personalities. I remember growing up saying I wanted to work for Pixar as an animator. The movie that caused me to pursue this was Ratatoille. I have sense lost that desire but; what im trying to say is 2D animation is superior in my own opinion and liking. Yes theres good 3D movies; i cant deny that. But all of my favourite movies were 2D. And i do miss it a lot. I wish i was still a thing for Disney movies

It's a shame because a lot of the 2D movies at the time were really good movies and had very beautiful animation.
Not to mention Atlantis' amazing soundtrack.

I'm going to study animation in Lincoln, UK this September. At the start of the course, you learn the basic techniques of 2D and 3D animation and after a while, you get to decide if you want to continue studying 2D or 3D. I've decided to study 2D animation because I will attempt to make it more popular again in modern media. I personally think there's too much CG animation in today's film and TV industry, therefore I think it is time to go back to the traditional style.

I'm not saying I hate 3D or anything like that I love 3D but I'm getting sick of everything being 3D I really miss 2D. I don't know about anybody else but I'm hungry for 2D animation films only because they're so much 3D animation that I just wish there was a variety of both or even hybrids.

For 2D, look into anime. Films like "your name" are just beautiful! Really enjoyed "wolf children" too, or if you don't mind a series "erased", a thriller told in 12 episodes
