  • I was intrigued when I first saw the affordable mBot educational robot. But does this product deliver what a "kid's first robot" needs to actually teach them something?

It's probably because Taran is one of those guys you can't help but want to punch in the face. He reminds me of my senior college roomate who was in the oragami club, literally slept on the street during broad daylight and spoke japanese. I think people call them weirdos or nerds.

The Lego Mindstorms are miles better than this. I had the NXT when it first came out, and you can build a bunch of stuff with the parts and just the preloaded code. The sensors also work way better. The newest version (EV3) is a lot more advanced, comes with new parts, and you can build 17 different things with the stock instructions. It's a lot more kid-friendly, too. Expensive, but 100% worth it.

I totally agree with you Taran on getting much better robotics kits. I am currently pursuing an engineering degree, and in our first year, our project design class required us to use a VEX robotics kit to address the "problem" we were given. While the VEX and LEGO mindstorms seem more "complicated"... they really aren't. We used a proprietary language meant for these robots (RobotC), which is just basically C. Super simple. I believe the mBot makes it harder for kids to learn because of the graphical interface, it just doesn't seem as intuitive. Heck, get your kid an arduino uno instead.

LinusTechTips Great job hosting Taran - your review was thorough and fair, doing a good job putting the product's faults into the context of its target demographic and advertised use case. Your speech was well paced and clear too, without any superfluous intonations (Hi? Today we're going to talk about? The mBot?)

I helped my son assemble and program a new mBot that he got last week. We had none of the issues that the author of this video had with setting up or using the software to program the bot. Assembly was straightforward as well. I agree that they will run into the limits of this robot pretty quickly, but it's a good start for the $50 price. FWIW, I helped them program the three modes that the default program performed so that they could get experience with the sensors and motors.

You CAN make the lights go on and off while performing other stuff. It is just that you dont want to use wait(). Then again I am amazed at the fact that you did not seem to know what a com-port is... Also you can code without the blocks, which makes it all way easier for advanced users. Yes NXC lego robot programming is even easier, but also way more expensive. The mBot is just entry-level robotics, and will get more firmware upgrades. Keep in mind most competitors have been around for over 5-10 years.

Taran you bossed this review, so damn professional. Also my 2 cents on this is I used the mindstorms kit in uni and programmed it using java and a lejos api, it's really fun when you are making progress and super satisfying seeing your code being executed in a physical thing moving about. However when its not going well and its down to some bug because your working with beta software built on top of alpha software or something similar it can infruariting. Also to my knowledge the mindstorms kit can't take advantage of multi threading either, ran into this problem when we were trying to localise our bot in a maze.

Honestly for a classroom setting, we used either the Picaxe chips 28x and 40X and used normal parts like motors, wires, resistors, sensors and such. If it was for only one person it would be expensive but for a whole classroom where you can re-use parts then the price would make more sense if you bought it in bulk.

The use of delay() functions in the Arduino code is what makes it so terrible. This hardware may actually be alright if you just hooked it up to the standard Arduino IDE instead of the weird drag-n-drop thing that is provided as part of the package. I get that the target demo is kids, but for literally anyone else, it would probably be better to just consider it an Arduino with some sensors and motors attached. At that point the price isn't THAT bad.
Also, very nice hosting by Taran. I hope the other companies send some units for you to review. I would like to see that.

I personally enjoy using the original NXT 2.0 kit, and I also tinker around with the EV3. With the NXT, I was able to take the "brick" (Brain of the robot), stick it onto a Lego helicopter of mine, add some motors and reattach propellers, and I was able to make a working Lego helicopter using simple programming. If you're okay with spending the $350 price premium of the EV3, I would strongly recommend that as its way more versatile.

nice vid Teranc could really tell how much work you put into into, I'm not really the target consumer for such a product but it was still interesting to learn about. Would be definitely curious to see what other robotics products are available for a more experienced user.

Thank you Taran. I was thinking about getting one for my son's birthday in August. I'm now getting a Raspberry PI based Robot kit from Dawn Robotics that includes wifi and a camera module. There's opencv based computer vision projects specifically for the platform so hope my son will have fun with it for a while.

@4:50 micro controllers dont have the ability to hyperthread, but they do how ever have interrupts. Those work fine as well. Set the led program to activate during interrupts while keeping the main code for the line following or the other way arround ;)

I can't speak for Lego Mindstorms 3.0, but 2.0 is fantastic! They have local competitions here for schools who make robots using these kits. Well worth the money!

Taran's review was much more detailed and in depth than what Linus usually does.

I did one like that as a project for my class. That's not something to get fascinated with, but it would be nice to see "new" projects.

Linus, alliteration is the repetition of consonants. Assonance is the repetition of vowels. I literally just did poetry in English.

I have a LEGO mindstorms 2.0, and can agree with Taran and say that it is well worth the extra money. What's even better are the third party sites like NxtPrograms, and some technical one which I forgot the name, that you can buy extra parts from including sound, touch, ultrasonic, thermal, accelerometer, gyroscopic, IR etc, not forgetting that it comes with built in Bluetooth.

I've got a great idea, why don'y you use windows server 2012 R2 to create a domain controller for your whole network! This allows each member of the LinusTechTips Media Group to have their own login on each computer and stores all their data on one single server with a 10gbs link to every computer! Like this comment if you think it is a good idea!
